Albert Pike recoge en Moral y Dogma las enseñanzas de los distintos grados del Rito Escocés Antiguo y Aceptado en un intento de retornar la Iniciación hacia sus contenidos originales así como de defender el compromiso individual con los valores masónicos. Moral y Dogma ha sido de lectura obligada para todos los miembros de la Jurisdicción Sur de EE.UU. desde su edición en 1871 hasta 1974, año en que fue considerado "demasiado avanzado para ser útil al nuevo miembro". Entre las antiguas naciones existía, al margen del culto público, otro minoritario denominado los Misterios, a los que únicamente eran admitidos aquellos que habían sido preparados por medio de ciertas ceremonias llamadas Iniciaciones. En todas partes, y en todas sus formas, los Misterios estaban imbuidos de carácter fúnebre; y celebraban la muerte mística y la restauración a la vida de algún personaje heroico o divino, variando los detalles de la leyenda y la forma de muerte según los distintos países en que los Misterios eran practicados. El simbolismo de los Misterios pertenece tanto a la astronomía como a la mitología, y la leyenda del grado de Maestro de la Masonería no es más que otra forma de los Misterios; una leyenda que se remonta, de una u otra forma, a la más remota antigüedad. Es imposible saber ahora si la leyenda se originó en Egipto, o si se tomó prestada de la India o de Caldea. Pero los hebreos sí recibieron los Misterios de los egipcios, y desde luego estaban familiarizados con su leyenda, siendo conocida como era por los iniciados egipcios Josué y Moisés.
