Caio Fernando Abreu is one of those authors who is picked up by every generation... In these surreal and gripping stories about desire, tyranny, fear, and love, one of Brazil’s greatest queer writers appears in English for the first time In 18 daring, scheming stories filled with tension and intimacy, Caio Fernando Abreu navigates a Brazil transformed by the AIDS epidemic and stifling military dictatorship of the 80s. Tenderly suspended between fear and longing, Abreu’s characters grasp for connection: A man speckled with Carnival glitter crosses a crowded dance floor and seeks the warmth and beauty of another body. A budding office friendship between two young men turns into a surprising love, “a strange and secret harmony." One man desires another but fears a clumsy word or gesture might tear their plot to pieces. Abreu writes the stories of people whose intimate lives are on the verge of imploding at all times. Even simple gestures—a salvaged cigarette, a knock on the door from the hazy downpour of a dream, a tight-lipped smile—are precarious offerings. Junkies, failed revolutionaries, poets, and conflicted artists face threats at every turn. But, inwardly ferocious and secretly resilient, they heal. In these stories there is luminous memory and decay, and beauty on the horizon. Translated by Bruna Dantas Lobato, currently an Iowa Arts Fellow and MFA candidate in Literary Translation at the University of Iowa.

The book examines the links between literature and film in Latin America by using queer theory and a series of recent cultural productions whose arguments destabilize traditional gender roles and heteronormative masculinity. For many years, the connections between a literary text and its film adaptation have been considered only from the point of view of the latter’s fidelity to the written work, which many scholars imagined to be the original that filmmakers needed to respect. Within the last two decades, however, the idea of adaptation fidelity has been challenged by a number of critics who refute the existence of an original text and promote the notion of an ambiguous and complex relationship between a literary work and its film adaptation. Based on such developments and with the help of queer theory, this book questions and revises several crucial theoretical approximations that analyze the relations between the two art forms in an attempt to overcome the limitations of fidelity discourse. This is the first book-length study that seeks to examine, with the appropriate detail, the connections between film and literature in Latin America through the lenses of queer theory and by focusing on the representations of numerous practices that do not fit within the general framework of heteronormative sexuality.

Contracultura written by Christopher Dunn and has been published by UNC Press Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-13 with History categories.

Christopher Dunn's history of authoritarian Brazil exposes the inventive cultural production and intense social transformations that emerged during the rule of an iron-fisted military regime during the sixties and seventies. The Brazilian contracultura was a complex and multifaceted phenomenon that developed alongside the ascent of hardline forces within the regime in the late 1960s. Focusing on urban, middle-class Brazilians often inspired by the international counterculture that flourished in the United States and parts of western Europe, Dunn shows how new understandings of race, gender, sexuality, and citizenship erupted under even the most oppressive political conditions. Dunn reveals previously ignored connections between the counterculture and Brazilian music, literature, film, visual arts, and alternative journalism. In chronicling desbunde, the Brazilian hippie movement, he shows how the state of Bahia, renowned for its Afro-Brazilian culture, emerged as a countercultural mecca for youth in search of spiritual alternatives. As this critical and expansive book demonstrates, many of the country's social and justice movements have their origins in the countercultural attitudes, practices, and sensibilities that flourished during the military dictatorship.

In the year 2020 the world stopped and we were forced to do a quarantine that became a nightmare. We are already in 2022 and we are still counting the losses. Much of the neglect of the Brazilian government's management with education and science is already beginning to be forgotten. During the year 2020, I was reading and writing an analysis diary of the work “A vida de Galileo” by German author Bertolt Brecht for my second doctoral thesis in the area of literary theory at UNICAMP. The pandemic crisis invaded my reading analyzes of the work that are recorded in the diary I wrote in 1 year when we were wondering if we would have vaccines against COVID-19. The written diary served as the basis for the autoethnographic analysis of the thesis in literary theory of criticism of science and the life of scientists. The decision to publish the diary as a book has the same objective of making the noise of the flight of bats as in the short story “The companions: a blurry story” by the writer Caio Fernando Abreu. Abreu's tale is about a group of fellow political activists who gather in a house and remain completely silent. The only sounds that reach us readers are that of an analytical narrator present who tries to speak for each of those characters who cannot tell their stories; the other sound that all the characters can hear is that produced by the wings of bats that fly outside the house all the time, breaking the silence and disturbing that group of people. This leads us to think that the idea of publishing the diary is to encourage our bats to be very noisy and not to silence the memories. Here we present a bilingual version of the diary (Portuguese/English). Portuguese version: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6653200

Of interest to scholars in translation studies, gender and sexuality, and comparative literary and cultural studies, this volume re-examines the possibilities for multiple intersections between translation studies and research on sexuality and gender, and in so doing addresses the persistent theoretical gaps in much work on translation and gender to date. The current climate still seems to promote the continuation of identity politics by encouraging conversations that depart from an all too often limited range of essentializing gendered subject positions. A more inclusive approach to the theoretical intersection between translation and gender as proposed by this volume aims to open up the discussion to a wider range of linguistically and culturally informed representations of sexuality and gender, one in which neither of these two theoretical terms, much less the subjects associated with them, is considered secondary or subordinate to the other. This discussion extends not only to questions of linguistic difference as mediated through the act of translation, but also to the challenges of intersubjectivity as negotiated through culture, ‘race’ or ethnicity. The volume also makes a priority of engaging a wide range of cultural and linguistic spaces: Latin America under military dictatorship, numerous points of the African cultural diaspora, and voices from South, Southeast and East Asia. Such perspectives are not included merely as supplemental, ‘minority’ additions to an otherwise metropolitan-centred volume, but instead are integral to the volume’s focus, underscoring its goal of re-engendering translation studies through a politics of alterity that encourages the continued articulation and translation of difference, be it sexual or gendered, cultural or linguistic.

"The controversial works of Brazilian authors Silviano Santiago(1936-) and Caio Fernando Abreu (1948-96) offer distinctive but complementary explorations of male homosexual subjectivities formulated through displacement, exile and the abject. Posso examines the innovative ways in which these writers stage-manage Western poststructuralist thought to critique heterosexist exclusion in Brazil and in globalized popular and folk culture, and he explains how they draw on diverse cultural productions and art works to extend a general undermining of oppositional logic and psychoanalytic theory."
