This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1893 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER II THE FIRST JOURNEY ACROSS THE DESERT OF GOBI IN May 1870, James Gilmour reached Peking, and became attached to the London Mission in that city. He had been there only a little over a month when the massacre of Roman Catholics at Tientsin took place. It was in keeping with the character of the man, that at a time of difficulty and danger, when the air was full of rumours, and when many of the most experienced missionaries were anxiously con- sulting how to secure personal safety for themselves and their friends, his chief concern was how to get the work done for which he had been sent. He finally resolved to get that work done by doing it; and so, ignorant of the language, an absolute stranger to the country, taking his life in his hand, with childlike trust in the loving care of the God to whose service he had fully consecrated himself, he left Peking and went forth to attempt to conquer Mongolia for Christ. Missionary annals of the nine- teenth century abound in heroic and self-denying deeds, but even they can furnish no finer example of whole-hearted devotion to work. It was also characteristic of James Gilmour to keep a full record of his daily experiences, and of his spiritual state from time to time. His diary of those early and lonely days and years of Mongolian life is unique. This generation will never again see through eyes so keen and so sympathetic Mongol life and character in all its freshness. Hence it has been thought advisable to put on permanent record, in an easily accessible form, his own story of his hopes and fears, his wearying journeys, his strenuous toil in acquiring the language, his willingness to share all the hardships of winter life in a Mongol tent, if by so doing he could master their hard speech, ..

Most people believe the Mongolian Empire was a small tribe known for looting, robbing, and pillaging. The Mongols used to be little more than nomads prowling the harsh and often barren steppes of Mongolia. The Mongols were innovative and creative in everything they did beyond just warfare. They owed their successes to their military tactics and impressive art of war. Here's What You're Going to Learn in This Book The Mongol Army Creating an Empire The Mongol Civil Wars Fall of the Mongol Empire And much more! The Ottoman Empire was so big and lasted for so long, yet it is one of those empires that many common people have forgotten about. The people who lived in what is now Turkey, and in surrounding areas, were mostly devout Muslims who were defending their beliefs and trying to expand the realm to conquer more territory. Shockingly, the empire was slowly falling apart by the time the 20th century came around the corner.

Genghis Khan is one of history's immortals: a leader of genius, driven by an inspiring vision for peaceful world rule. Believing he was divinely protected, Genghis united warring clans to create a nation and then an empire that ran across much of Asia. Under his grandson, Kublai Khan, the vision evolved into a more complex religious ideology, justifying further expansion. Kublai doubled the empire's size until, in the late 13th century, he and the rest of Genghis’s ‘Golden Family’ controlled one fifth of the inhabited world. Along the way, he conquered all China, gave the nation the borders it has today, and then, finally, discovered the limits to growth. Genghis's dream of world rule turned out to be a fantasy. And yet, in terms of the sheer scale of the conquests, never has a vision and the character of one man had such an effect on the world. Charting the evolution of this vision, John Man provides a unique account of the Mongol Empire, from young Genghis to old Kublai, from a rejected teenager to the world’s most powerful emperor.

The History And The Life Of Chinggis Khan written by Onon and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-07-24 with History categories.

The History was written in the 13th Century. It deals briefly with the ancestors and successor (Ögödei, reign 1228-1241) of Chinggis Khan and in more detail with the life of Chinggis Khan, who was founder of the Mongol Empire. The empire during Khubilai Khan's reign was expanded from Mongolia and China to the western edge of Russia. It was the most extensive empire ever established on horseback (about 700 years later, the British empire was built on ships). The History has been translated into many foreign languages: Hungarian, Turkish, Polish, Chinese, Russian, French, German, Japanese and English, but the integral text has never before been translated by a native Mongol scholar, using mainly the Mongolian sources to explicate the meaning of previous unknown words in it. As the translator and annotator says in his introduction, the History is the winners' history. The losers' version might well have been different. Chinggis Khan with his 129,000 Mongol cavalrymen never lost a battle. He was the best strategist the world has ever produced. In his article "Chingis Khan and the Mongol Conquest", the late Professor Owen Lattimore said "As a military genius, able to take over new techniques and improve them, Chingis stands above Alexander the Great, Hannibal, Caesar, Atilla and Napoleon" (See Scientific American, August 1963, p. 66).

The Mongols carved out the largest land-based empire in world history, stretching from Korea to Russia in the north and from China to Syria in the south in the thirteenth century. Along with their leader Chinggis Khan they conjure up images of plunder and total destruction. Although this book does not ignore the devastation and killings wrought by the Mongols, it also reveals their contributions to governance, arts, culture, and the promotion of trade. The Mongol peace resulted in considerable travel and relations among numerous merchants, scientists, artists, missionaries, and entertainers of different ethnic groups. It is no accident that Europeans, including Marco Polo, first reached China in this period. Eurasian and perhaps global history starts with the Mongol empire.

How Genghis Khan and the Mongols conquered nearly one-sixth of the planet: “The fascinating story of history’s most misunderstood empire builders.” —Alan Axelrod, bestselling author of Miracle at Belleau Wood Emerging out of the vast steppes of Central Asia in the early 1200s, the Mongols, under their ferocious leader, Genghis Khan, quickly carved out an empire that by the late thirteenth century covered almost one-sixth of the Earth’s landmass—from Eastern Europe to the eastern shore of Asia—and encompassed 110 million people. Far larger than the much more famous domains of Alexander the Great and ancient Rome, it has since been surpassed in overall size and reach only by the British Empire. The Rise and Fall of the Second Largest Empire in the World recounts the spectacularly rapid expansion and dramatic decline of the Mongol realm, while examining its real, widespread, and enduring influence on countless communities from the Danube River to the Pacific Ocean. “Great sweeping history from a superb writer.” —Joseph Cummins, author of The War Chronicles “A skillful and imaginative storyteller and conscientious historian.” —David Willis McCullough, author of Wars of the Irish Kings
