Until the latter part of the twentieth century, Mormonism has been presented in scholarly reconstructions as a religion that has not changed significantly from its beginnings, that presently held beliefs existed as a central core of doctrine at the church's founding in 1830. The author argues, instead, that the development of Mormonism has been primarily due to external events, popular, cultural, philosophical, religious and scientific, and that these influences have led to the emergence of several streams of thought that are actually in opposition to the early beliefs of the church. Arguably, Mormonism can be seen as a reflection of the development of American society and culture from the early 1800s to the present. The major aim of this work is to establish a proper chronology for the development of Mormon thought, specifically in its concept of the nature of God. The book contains a comprehensive bibliography and index.

'Serious efforts to understand Mormonism in a non-confrontational, non-polemical way are few and far between. In this book the author, John Bracht, has drawn together a multitude of LDS sources in order to demonstrate differences between Mormonism and 'traditional' Christian views on the nature of God and the Godhead."

Winner of the Best Anthology Book Award from the John Whitmer Historical Association Winner of the Special Award for Scholarly Publishing from the Association for Mormon Letters Scholarly interest in Mormon theology, history, texts, and practices--what makes up the field now known as Mormon studies--has reached unprecedented levels, making it one of the fastest-growing subfields in religious studies. In this volume, Terryl Givens and Philip Barlow, two leading scholars of Mormonism, have brought together 45 of the top experts in the field to construct a collection of essays that offers a comprehensive overview of scholarship on Mormons. The book begins with a section on Mormon history, perhaps the most well-developed area of Mormon studies. Chapters in this section deal with questions ranging from how Mormon history is studied in the university to the role women have played over time. Other sections examine revelation and scripture, church structure and practice, theology, society, and culture. The final two sections look at Mormonism in a larger context. The authors examine Mormon expansion across the globe--focusing on Mormonism in Latin America, the Pacific, Europe, and Asia--in addition to the interaction between Mormonism and other social systems, such as law, politics, and other faiths. Bringing together an impressive body of scholarship, this volume reveals the vast range of disciplines and subjects where Mormonism continues to play a significant role in the academic conversation. The Oxford Handbook of Mormonism will be an invaluable resource for those within the field, as well as for people studying the broader, ever-changing American religious landscape.

Exploring Mormon Thought written by Blake T. Ostler and has been published by Greg Kofford Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-10-01 with Religion categories.

In this first volume Blake T. Ostler explores Christian and Mormon notions about God. Written for both Mormons and non-Mormons interested in the relationship between Mormonism and classical theism, his path-breaking Exploring Mormon Thought: The Attributes of God is a critique of classical theism regarding some of the central concepts that have formed the Christian understanding of God. He deals with questions of traditional philosophical theology including free will and foreknowledge, the nature of God and Christology. The approach to these questions is from the analytic philosophical tradition and includes detailed arguments relating to the coherence of Christian belief, scripture and practice. However he recognizes that religious faith is far more a product of intimacy with the divine than of ultimacy of reason, more a product of relationships than of logical necessities. He provides an overview of the most influential Christian notions of deity, exploring themes and resources within this discourse that might be helpful to Latter-day Saint explorations. Also highlighted are various perspectives within Mormonism itself including a detailed analysis of Joseph Smith's Lectures on Faith and discussion of the thought of Orson and Parley Pratt, B. H. Roberts and John Widstoe. Earlier Mormon thought is demonstrated to have included a concept of God as a being in process. He suggests areas in which Mormon approaches to questions about free agency and God's omnipotence might suggest resolutions to some of the difficult issues that have troubled theologians and philosophers for centuries. For the first time ever Ostler formulates a systematic Mormon Christology.

"The Mormon Doctrine of Deity" is a seminal work with the aid of B. H. Roberts, a distinguished early twentieth-century leader and theologian within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). This book explores and clarifies the specific Mormon perspective on the character of God. In the book, Roberts delves into core doctrines of the LDS faith, in particular the notion in a divine hierarchy known as the Godhead. The LDS Church teaches that the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit are separate and wonderful personages, united in purpose but no longer in substance. This idea sets Mormon theology apart from mainstream Christian ideals and is an important recognition of Roberts' paintings. Roberts also examines the concept of human capability for godhood, regularly summarized with the phrase "As guy is, God as soon as become; as God is, man may also turn out to be." This idea, called theosis or deification, is explored in-intensity as it relates to the character and potential of humanity inside the Mormon faith. "The Mormon Doctrine of Deity" stays a vast contribution to the theological discourse inside the LDS Church and serves as a useful resource for each believers and scholars searching for to understand the unique teachings and perspectives of Mormonism on the nature of God and the everlasting capacity of humanity.

A familiar sight in America today is seeing two young men wearing ties, white shirts with name tags, and black pants pedaling their bicycles through towns and neighborhoods. Most recognize the uniform of young Mormon missionaries on their two-year mission seeking to promote and convert anyone willing to listen to their story. What is becoming increasingly familiar is the rise of entertainment and political figures also identifying themselves as practicing Mormons. What is difficult for many Americans is deciding whether the gospel the LDS Church has promoted over the past two centuries is the same gospel proclaimed by traditional Christian churches over the past two millennia. Are they sincere Christians, a non-Christian cult, or something else altogether? This book seeks to provide an understanding of the history and basic beliefs of traditional Christianity and compare them to the history and beliefs of Mormonism.
