This book is a description of the morphology, including the morphophonology, of the Old Occitan language (Old Provencal, the language of the troubadours). It is elementary in insisting on the synchronic rules of the relationship between the forms, rather than aiming at listing all forms found in all texts. It is a contribution to Romance linguistics addressed to linguists and philologists, rather than to students at an early instruction level.

Variation And Change In Gallo Romance Grammar written by Sam Wolfe and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-07 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This volume offers a wide-range of case studies on variation and change in the sub-family of the Romance languages that includes French and Occitan: Gallo-Romance. Both standard and non-standard Gallo-Romance data can be of enormous value to studies of morphosyntactic variation and change, yet, as the volume demonstrates, non-standard and comparative Gallo-Romance data have often been lacking in both synchronic and diachronic studies. Following an introduction that sets out the conceptual background, the volume is divided into three parts whose chapters explore a variety of topics in the domains of sentence structure, the verb complex, and word structure. The empirical foundation of the volume is exceptionally rich, drawing on standard and non-standard data from French, Occitan, Francoprovençal, Picard, Wallon, and Norman. This diversity is also reflected in the theoretical and conceptual approaches adopted, which span traditional philology, sociolinguistics, formal morphological and syntactic theory, semantics, and discourse-pragmatics. The volume will thus be an indispensable tool for researchers and students in French and (Gallo-) Romance linguistics as well as for readers interested in grammatical theory, sociolinguistics, and historical linguistics.

Defaults In Morphological Theory written by Nikolas Gisborne and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-13 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Chapters in this volume describe morphology using four different frameworks that have an architectural property in common: they all use defaults as a way of discovering and presenting systematicity in the least systematic component of grammar. These frameworks - Construction Morphology, Network Morphology, Paradigm-function Morphology, and Word Grammar - display key differences in how they constrain the use and scope of defaults, and in the morphological phenomena that they address. An introductory chapter presents an overview of defaults in linguistics and specifically in morphology. In subsequent chapters, key proponents of the four frameworks seek to answer questions about the role of defaults in the lexicon, including: Does a defaults-based account of language have implications for the architecture of the grammar, particularly the proposal that morphology is an autonomous component? How does a default differ from the canonical or prototypical in morphology? Do defaults have a psychological basis? And how do defaults help us understand language as a sign-based system that is flawed, where the one to one association of form and meaning breaks down in the morphology?

This dictionary of old occitan from Auvergne is based on about 200 original manuscripts pro-duced during the 1340-1540 period by consular, seigniorial and religious authorities of two regions of Haute-Auvergne (Mauriacois and Sanflorain in the present department of Cantal) characterized by a palatalized occitan (chabra, jausir). The editions of texts written in old occi-tan from Auvergne being rare (see references in the DOM) and often not reliable, it was neces-sary to work only on the original documents. This also allowed the discovery of many un-known manuscripts. The main part of the corpus constituting this dictionary comes from the city of Saint-Flour which kept the occitan language for administrative use until ca. 1540. This dictionary contains about 7,000 entries and more than 12,000 definitions representing words and expressions mainly of the juridical, commercial, artisanal and military domains. Words of the nature and wild life are less represented. All these terms are illustrated by one to several examples carefully edited. Many of these words and locutions are first occurrences. References to other publications dealing with old occitan (DOM, Lv, FEW, etc.) allow compari-sons with other dialects to be made. This dictionary, which differs from most of other dictionar-ies based on yet published texts, shows how a thorough study of the documents of a restricted area and period may improve our knowledge of old occitan.

From Latin To Romance written by Adam Ledgeway and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-05-18 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This book examines the grammatical changes that took place in the transition from Latin to the Romance languages. The emerging languages underwent changes in three fundamental areas involving the noun phrase, verb phrase, and the sentence. The impact of the changes can be seen in the reduction of the Latin case system; the appearance of auxiliary verb structures to mark such categories tense, mood, and voice; and a shift towards greater rigidification of word order. The author considers how far these changes are interrelated and compares their various manifestations and pace of change across the different standard and non-standard varieties of Romance. He describes the historical background to the emergence of the Romance varieties and their Latin ancestry, considering in detail the richly documented diachronic variation exhibited by the Romance family. Adam Ledgeway reviews the accounts and explanations that have been proposed within competing theoretical frameworks, and considers how far traditional ideas should be reinterpreted in light of recent theoretical developments. His wide-ranging account shows that the transition from Latin to Romance is not only of great intrinsic interest, but both provides a means of challenging linguistic orthodoxies and presents opportunities to shape new persepctives on language change, structure, and variation.
