Mort de Dama és la primera novel·la escrita per Llorenç Villalonga i Pons i és considerada una de les primeres novel·les modernistes de les Illes Balears. La novel·la és una sàtira de la societat mallorquina i gira entorn de l'agonia d'Obdúlia de Montcada, una viuda que representa l'aristocràcia, una dona avariciosa i de caràcter fort. La viuda fa d'eix temàtic amb la resta de personatges que mostren els diferents vessants de la societat de l'illa, des dels terratinents nobiliaris i aristòcrates al món intel·lectual i literari. La comparació del passat esplendorós amb els tems de canvi que retrata l'autor a la novel·la és un dels punts principals de la història. Llorenç Villalonga i Pons (Palma, 1897-1980) va ser escriptor i psiquiatre mallorquí. És considerat una de les figures més importants del modernisme balear. Va estudiar medicina a Saragossa, Murcia, Barcelona i Madrid i es va especialitzar a la universitat de França. Va publicar la seva primera novel·la en 1931, però després de la guerra va deixar la seva activitat literària i no la reprengué fins al 1952. La seva posició anticatalanista el va fer canviar d'idioma i molta de la seva obra va ser produïda en castellà. A l'inici de la Guerra Civil Espanyola, Villalonga va afiliar-se a la Falange Espanyola i fins als anys cinquanta no va reconciliar-se amb la seva llengua materna. Al llarg de la seva vida va escriure quinze novel·les, cinc llibres de relats i multitud d'articles.

Villalonga va publicar Mort de dama, la seva primera novel·la, el 1931, amb el pseudònim Dhey i amb pròleg de Gabriel Alomar, que en lloava la crítica al conservadorisme local. Estructurada en escenes que van succeint-se al voltant del llit demort de Dona Obdúlia deMoncada, la darrera gran aristòcrata palmesana (empeltada, però, amb sang plebea), l'obra presenta l'evocació d'un passat pretesament esplendorós, que ella representa i que amb ella desapareix,mentre al seu voltant es va movent un petit món d'intrigues i d'interessos. L'adaptació que aquí presentem, a càrrec de Marc Rosich i Rafel Duran, aprofita l'indubtable potencial dramàtic de la novel·la, tot respectant la trama i el retrat sarcàstic d'uns personatges que conformen un fresc admirable de les forces vives de l'illa i que fan de Mort de dama una de les obres més destacables de Villalonga.
