'Mortality over the twentieth century in Australia' is a comprehensive analysis of the causes of death from 1907 to 2000. Although it is well known that life expectancy for Australians increased over the last century, analyses presented in this report show how the changes in the causes of death help to explain why we are living longer. This report describes patterns and trends in mortality over the century, highlighting the great successes but also some areas where improvements are still clearly needed.

This volume provides evidence from many of Australia’s leading scholars from a range of social science disciplines to support policies that address challenges presented by Australia’s ageing population. It builds on presentations made to the 2014 Symposium of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia. The material is in four parts: Perspectives on AgeingPopulation Ageing: Global, regional and Australian perspectivesImproving Health and WellbeingResponses by Government and Families/Individuals ‘The Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia sees this volume as a major contribution to improving our understanding of Australia’s population ageing. Social science research in this area truly underpins our ability as a nation to manage such demographic change, and its consequences for the economy and society. Such knowledge helps ensure that our citizens can live even better lives.’ — Glenn Withers, President, ASSA ‘It is fantastic that Australians are living longer and healthier lives but we need to address these demographic changes.’ — The Hon Joe Hockey MP, 2015 Intergenerational Report

Explaining Divergent Levels Of Longevity In High Income Countries written by National Research Council and has been published by National Academies Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-06-27 with Social Science categories.

During the last 25 years, life expectancy at age 50 in the United States has been rising, but at a slower pace than in many other high-income countries, such as Japan and Australia. This difference is particularly notable given that the United States spends more on health care than any other nation. Concerned about this divergence, the National Institute on Aging asked the National Research Council to examine evidence on its possible causes. According to Explaining Divergent Levels of Longevity in High-Income Countries, the nation's history of heavy smoking is a major reason why lifespans in the United States fall short of those in many other high-income nations. Evidence suggests that current obesity levels play a substantial part as well. The book reports that lack of universal access to health care in the U.S. also has increased mortality and reduced life expectancy, though this is a less significant factor for those over age 65 because of Medicare access. For the main causes of death at older ages-cancer and cardiovascular disease-available indicators do not suggest that the U.S. health care system is failing to prevent deaths that would be averted elsewhere. In fact, cancer detection and survival appear to be better in the U.S. than in most other high-income nations, and survival rates following a heart attack also are favorable. Explaining Divergent Levels of Longevity in High-Income Countries identifies many gaps in research. For instance, while lung cancer deaths are a reliable marker of the damage from smoking, no clear-cut marker exists for obesity, physical inactivity, social integration, or other risks considered in this book. Moreover, evaluation of these risk factors is based on observational studies, which-unlike randomized controlled trials-are subject to many biases.

Inequality In Australia written by Alastair Greig and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-02-17 with Business & Economics categories.

This text seeks to analyse and explain inequality, challenging traditional conceptions and providing a new critical perspective. The authors provide a comprehensive historical account of inequality, and show how that account no longer adequately explains the new and different forms of inequality experienced in recent decades. As society has changed, they argue, new forms of inequality have emerged, conditioning the subject's very experience of identity, embodiment and politics. The book is at once a critical overview of contemporary inequality and a thorough-going textbook suitable for undergraduates.

Fatal Contact written by Peter Dowling and has been published by Australian History this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-07 with History categories.

Fatal Contact explores the devastating infectious diseases introduced into the Indigenous populations of Australia after the arrival of the British colonists in 1788. Epidemics of smallpox, tuberculosis, influenza, measles and sexually transmitted diseases swept through the Indigenous populations of the continent well into the twentieth century. The consequences still echo today in Aboriginal health and life expectancy. Many historians have acknowledged that introduced diseases caused much sickness and mortality among the Aboriginal populations and were part of the huge population decline following colonisation. But few writers have elaborated further, and much of this history is still missing, even after more than 200 years. Our knowledge and understanding of the biological consequences surrounding the meeting and contact of these two cultures has not yet been fully investigated. What the investigation in Fatal Contact reveals is nothing short of the greatest human tragedy in the long history of Australia. This is a vitally important story that all Australians should read.
