Moses Among The Idols written by Amy L. Balogh and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-15 with Religion categories.

In Moses among the Idols: Mediators of the Divine in the Ancient Near East, Balogh simultaneously redefines one of the greatest figures in the history of religion and challenges the historically popular understanding of ancient Mesopotamian idols as the idle objects of antiquated faiths. Drawing on interdisciplinary research and methods of comparison, Balogh not only offers new insight into the lives of idols as active mediators between humanity and divinity, she also makes the case that when it comes to understanding the figure of Moses, Mesopotamian idols are the best analogy that the ancient Near East provides. This new understanding of Moses, idols, and the interplay between the two on the stage of history and within the biblical text has been made possible only with the recent publication of pertinent texts from ancient Mesopotamia. Drawing from the fields of Assyriology, biblical studies, comparative religion, and archaeology, Balogh identifies a problem with Moses’s status, and offers an unexpected solution to that problem. Moses among the Idols centers on the question: What is it that transforms Moses from an inadequate representative of Yahweh who is “uncircumcised of lips” to “god to Pharaoh” (Exodus 6:28-7:1)? In this moment, Moses undergoes a status change best understood through comparison with the induction ritual for ancient Mesopotamian idols as described in the texts of the Mīs Pȋ, “Washing” or “Purification of the Mouth.” This solution to the problem of Moses’s status explains not only his status change, but also why Moses radiates light after speaking with YHWH (Exod 34:29-35), and his peculiar relationship with YHWH and people of Israel. The comparative, interdisciplinary perspective provided by Balogh allows one to read these and other millennia-old interpretive issues anew, and to do so in a way that underscores the contribution of in-depth comparison to our understanding of ancient civilizations, texts, and intellectual frameworks.

Idols in our lives are like the spirit of slavery, when Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt they desired above the Promised Land the servant hood to Egyptians. They said to him, we were fed with onions, melons and leeks which were not theirs but belonged to the Egyptians or the devil in short, for they served foreign gods. It mean they were satisfied with seeing the great things of the Egyptian and being given the rejects of the onions and leeks were satisfied with the little that was of the abundance that did not belong to them. It means Israel in slavery got used to admiring and growing other people's things. They did not get used to building or erecting anything that is theirs. They did not want to build their own big houses, even when they were fed with manna from heaven, though heavenly and superior to human food, they desired flesh and melons. For whatever was rightfully theirs, they attached it to inferiority as the inferiors of Egypt. They failed to see themselves as giants of the land of Canaan. They desired flesh of this world instead of manna from heaven so they became a burden not just to themselves but even to Moses their leader. Numbers 11:10-14/KJV Then Moses heard the people weep throughout their families, every man in the door of his tent: and the anger of the LORD was kindled greatly; Moses also was displeased. And Moses said unto the LORD, Wherefore hast thou afflicted thy servant? And wherefore have I not found favour in thy sight, that thou layest the burden of all this people upon me? Have I conceived all this people? have I begotten them, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing father beareth the sucking child, unto the land which thou swarest unto their fathers? Whence should I have flesh to give unto all this people? for they weep unto me, saying, Give us flesh, that we may eat. I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me. The slave mentality does not just burden the bearer but even their leader. It teaches one to be a parasite, to be dependent on their leader even for things they can do themselves. It taught the Israelites not to set traps and catch food but rather look unto Moses, this is a spirit that must be dealt with and cast out of any congregation of Christ, we must not build idols of hope or providence to ourselves or our brothers. We are not to idolise our leaders or our provision. For when we build idols for our provision or faith we fail to focus on God because we know there is something between you and God. They used to being fed and limited to their masters' provision. They were the left over specialists of Egypt and so it settled in them that they are not supposed to have but rather to be parasites of their masters. They did not want to build their own church, their own houses, and their own societies but wanted to be slaves and be temporary occupants of everything. Even now a church that does not want to grow and become does the same thing. They do not read the word for themselves but depend on the pastor. They do not want the signs to follow them but their pastor. They do not want to give birth to the young but their pastor and so it is all about their pastor and they end up idolising him/her and so make him an idol that diverts them from God.

Idolatry In The Pentateuch written by Tracy J. McKenzie and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-02-04 with Religion categories.

Idolatry in the Pentateuch addresses both the manner in which the Pentateuch was produced and how theological intentions can be discerned from the texts that constitute it. McKenzie attempts to read the final shape of the Pentateuch while not ignoring the diachronic complexities within its pages. Using a compositional approach to the Pentateuch, he establishes his methodology, analyzes several idolatry-related texts, and traces the theological intentions through an inner-textual strategy. Moreover, McKenzie briefly considers the history of interpretation through the last few centuries and discusses the state of Old Testament studies as he understands it.

The human fascination with images, and the idolatry or idolization of images as the source of desire, passion and terror, is treated in this book. The first part enters more deeply into religious idolatry, past and present. It treats the biblical, the early-Jewish as well as the Christian views on monotheism and the prohibition against images, as source of authentic humanism or as source of intolerance and violence. In the second part, the focus shifts onto a number of contemporary, profane idols and gods: the nationalist fascination for one's own land and people, and the fear or hate towards foreigners; the rampant preoccupation with (genetic) health, in a context of body culture and aestheticization, of which the postmodern sport idols have become the great 'icons'; the current image- and screen-culture and all forms of audiovisual exorcisms; and last but not least the ongoing process of economization and globalization, with an expanding culture of 'branding' logos.

The heart of the biblical understanding of idolatry, argues Gregory Beale, is that we take on the characteristics of what we worship. Employing Isaiah 6 as his interpretive lens, Beale demonstrates that this understanding of idolatry permeates the whole canon, from Genesis to Revelation.

Judaism and Christianity have different meanings for the concept of ‘God.’ These religions rely on different transmitted texts. Different words – in the biblical Hebrew, biblical Greek, biblical Latin, biblical English – contribute to confusion in meaning. For example, what does ‘elohim’ mean? Is there a difference between ‘Yah’ and ‘Yahweh’? This book examines this confusion in meaning in the biblical texts. This confusion is at the heart of the divorce of Judaism and Christianity. Despite this, we can have a new way of understanding the concept “God”, by which one may re-examine and support a minority point of view in rabbinic tradition, known as the “two powers in heaven” doctrine. Given this revision, there is ample reason for enlightened renewal of a “messianic” interpretation of both Jewish and Christian faiths. This book, therefore, speaks to theologians, philosophers of religion with interests in Jewish and Christian religious traditions, students of philosophy, and informed believers.

In 1 Cor 8-10, Paul provides instruction about interactions with idols, and his practical instruction is based on his theology, which was adopted from Hellenistic Judaism and adapted radically in the light of Jesus Christ. Trent A. Rogers shows that understanding Paul's ethical reasoning is helped significantly by understanding how he and his predecessors represent God in their arguments. - back of book.
