"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."Martin Luther King Jr. One of the things that matter the most in every generation is leadership, which primarily is an influence. Successes and failures have always been traceable either directly or indirectly to the influence of leadership in every generation. As a leader, I strongly believe that one of the major reasons behind the under-development of our African continent in this 21st Century is the unwillingness of the Church to take its leading role in restoring the Kingdom to the society. Like the Biblical Israelites of the Moses Generation, who failed to enter their Promised Land, we have pitched our tents in the wilderness and refused to go any further but in circles. There is a land waiting for you to conquer and possess; a territory to take over for the Kingdom. Like Joshua, our generation is called of God to conquer new territories and expand the influence of the Kingdom to a higher horizon. You're a person of destiny. You're saved to save a nation; redeemed to redeem the earth to God; restored to restore the Kingdom to your society. Let's not stop at salvation only; let's bring salvation to our nation. We need to bring the Kingdom of God into every sphere of our society in order to overcome the darkness and restore the light. We are called to translate the realities of our kingdom life into tangible products reflecting the glory of our King and bettering the lives of others. This book is simply an expression of my deep scriptural convictions and experience. It's a clarion call to the sons of Issachar, who have an understanding of the times, to arise and take their place like a Joshua generation. I believe that God is changing the guards and the baton is being passed over, but are you ready to lead your generation into their Promised Land, or are you stuck with the Moses generation who are doomed to die in the wilderness though saved? I charge you to come out of the wilderness, take your place in leading your generation into their Promised Land, and I will be showing you how this can be achieved. In this book you'll discover: Facts about the Moses generation Understanding the Joshua generation Evil doctrines of Moses generation Embracing a Joshua generation leader The mindset of a Joshua generation The attitude of the Joshua generation Loyalty is first to God The wilderness experience Discovering your promised land In what condition will death meet you

While recent decades have seen a plethora of studies exploring the complex processes that shaped biblical books traditionally designated as Prophets, much remains to be done in order to uncover the rich history of their interpretation throughout the ages. This collection of essays aims at filling this gap by exploring different aspects of the exegesis of the Former and Latter Prophets in contexts both ancient and modern, Jewish and Christian. From the inner-biblical interpretation of the Prophets to the Dead Sea Scrolls, Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha, the New Testament, Patristic writings, and contemporary rhetoric, this volume sheds light on how key figures in those books were read and understood by both ancient and not so-ancient readers.

Among pivotal historical moments in the United States, the civil rights movement stands out. In Where the Sacred and Secular Harmonize: Birmingham Mass Meeting Rhetoric and the Prophetic Legacy of the Civil Rights Movement, David G. Holmes offers an original rhetorical analysis of six speeches delivered during the 1963 civil rights campaign in Birmingham, Alabama. Holmes frames his analysis within the biblical concept of prophecy. However, he stresses the idea of prophecy as sociopolitical forth-telling, rather than mystical foretelling. Based on his own transcriptions from rare recordings, Holmes examines how these orations, which clergy and laypeople delivered, address enduring themes such as the role of religion and politics, black leadership and black activism, and the political and popular legacies of the civil rights movement. Drawing upon American history, politics, hermeneutics, homiletics, and rhetoric, Holmes's discussion ranges from civil rights prophets to contemporary politicians, including Martin Luther King Jr. and Barack Obama. Where the Sacred and Secular Harmonize illustrates how the Birmingham mass meeting oratory of 1963 represented a quality of democratic discourse desperately needed today.

Honorable Mention, Theology and Religious Studies PROSE Award A powerful insight into the historical and cultural roles of the Black church If we are in a post-racial era, then what is the future of the Black Church? If the US will at some time in the future be free from discrimination and prejudices that are based on race how will that affect the church’s very identity? In The Ground Has Shifted, Walter Earl Fluker passionately and thoroughly discusses the historical and current role of the Black church and argues that the older race-based language and metaphors of religious discourse have outlived their utility. He offers instead a larger, global vision for the Black church that focuses on young Black men and other disenfranchised groups who have been left behind in a world of globalized capital. Lyrically written with an emphasis on the dynamic and fluid movement of life itself, Fluker argues that the church must find new ways to use race as an emancipatory instrument if it is to remain central in Black life, and he points the way for a new generation of church leaders, scholars and activists to reclaim the Black church’s historical identity and to turn to the task of infusing character, civility, and a sense of community among its congregants.

Born into a sharecropping family in New Hebron, Mississippi, in 1930, and only receiving a third-grade education, John M. Perkins has been a pioneering prophetic African American voice for reconciliation and social justice to America's white evangelical churches. Often an unwelcome voice and always a passionate, provocative clarion, Perkins persisted for forty years in bringing about the formation of the Christian Community Development Association—a large network of evangelical churches and community organizations working in America's poorest communities—and inspired the emerging generation of young evangelicals concerned with releasing the Church from its cultural captivity and oppressive materialism. John M. Perkins has received surprisingly little attention from historians of modern American religious history and theologians. Mobilizing for the Common Good is an exploration of his theological significance. With contributions from theologians, historians, and activists, this book contends that Perkins ushered in a paradigm shift in twentieth-century evangelical theology that continues to influence Christian community development projects and social justice activists today.

Leading a Diversity Culture Shift in Higher Education offers a practical and timely guide for launching, implementing, and institutionalizing diversity organizational learning. The authors draw from extensive interviews with chief diversity officers and college and university leaders to reveal the prevailing models and best practices for strengthening diversity practices within the higher education community today. They complement this original research with an analysis of key contextual factors that shape the organizational learning process including administrative leadership, institutional mission and goals, historical legacy, geographic location, and campus structures and politics. Given the substantive challenge of engendering a cultural shift for diversity in a university setting, this book will serve as a concrete primer for institutions seeking to develop a systematic and progressive approach to diversity organizational learning. Readers will be able to engage with provocative case studies that grapple with the current pressures emanating from diversity training and learn effective strategies for creating more inclusive environments. This book is a perfect resource for institutional leaders, administrators, faculty members, and key campus constituencies who are seeking transformational change, institutional success, and stability in a rapidly diversifying national and global environment.
