Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2015 im Fachbereich Politik - Region: Russland, Note: 2,0, Technische Universität Chemnitz (Europäische Geschichte), Veranstaltung: Russische Geschichte, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Für die christliche Kaiserherrschaft sowohl im oströmisch-byzantinischen Reich war in der historischen Abfolge der Weltreiche, die in der mittelalterlichen Geschichtsauffassung vorgegeben war, die Fortdauer des römischen Reiches ein tragendes Element der Legitimität. Die Rom-Idee und der daraus resultierende Gedanke einer "translatio imperii" hatten in der Traditionsgeschichte des russischorthodoxen Kulturkreises keine vergleichbare Entsprechung. Als in der Umbruchphase nach der Eroberung Konstantinopels im Jahr 1453 den Herrschern in Moskau ohne eigenes Zutun eine Führungsrolle innerhalb der orthodoxen Ökumene zufiel, vermieden sie es geflissentlich, in der internationalen Politik als Nachfolger der byzantinischen Kaiser zu agieren. Die von dem Mönch Filofej von Pskov ( 1465-1542) formulierte Idee "Moskau, das Dritte Rom" wurde zwar nie als offizielle Staatsideologie rezipiert, in ihrer Intention hatte sie aber unverkennbare Auswirkungen auf das erwachende Selbstbewusstsein der Moskauer ("Heiliges Russland") und den russischen Messianismus des 19. Jahrhunderts. Darauf wird später noch dezidiert eingegangen.

Der bereits in der Antike verbreitete Glaube an das „Roma aeterna“, mit der Vorstellung, dass die Stadt Rom und ihre Macht niemals untergehen werden, wurde in vielfältiger Weise vom späteren Christentum in einer vergeistigten Ausformung übernommen. Die Sowjetunion hat dieses Instrument dann zu einer gewissen Perfektion weiter entwickelt. Die Theorie des dritten Roms erlebt nach dem Zarenimperium und nach Stalins utopischen Plänen im heutigen Russland eine Renaissance in Form einer kraftvollen kirchlichen Macht, mit einer engen Bindung dieser Russisch Orthodoxen Kirche an den Staat. Die Gegenwartsrelevanz der Idee des dritten Roms liegt zudem im Kontext der Identitätsproblematik der Russen, der sogenannten „Generation Putin“ und der russischen Politik, insbesondere im Kontext des antiwestlichen Staatsprogramms Putins und der heutigen imperialen Sehnsucht. Die Arbeit enthält Interviews und Fotomaterial.

Western European Christendom finds it difficult to comprehend the Eastern Orthodox Church because it knows little about the practice and doctrines of Orthodoxy. Even what is known is overlaid by many strata of prejudices and misunderstandings, partly political in nature. One of the obstacles has been the natural tendency to confound the ideas and customs of the Orthodox Church with familiar parallels in Roman Catholicism. To escape this tradition pitfall, Ernst Benz focuses on icon painting as a logical place to begin his examination of the Orthodox Church. Beginning with a brilliant discussion of the importance of icons in the Eastern Church--and the far-reaching effects of icons on doctrine as well as art--Benz counteracts the confusion, explaining simply and clearly the liturgy and sacraments, dogma, constitution and law of Eastern Orthodoxy. In brief history, he describes the rise of Orthodox national churches, schismatic churches, and churches in exile; the role of monasticism and its striking differences from Roman Catholic monasticism; the missionary work of the Orthodox Church; and the influence of Orthodoxy on politics and culture. The role of the church can be defined in terms of the image. Benz writes that the church exists so that "members may be incorporated into the image of Jesus Christ a in that individual believers are aechanged into his likeness'" as Paul writes in the second letter to the Corinthians. Thus, Orthodox theology holds up the icon as the true key to the understanding of Orthodox dogma. The Eastern Orthodox Church will be valuable to anyone interested in learning more about the church, its thought, its life, and its ideals.
