"Nicole Loraux brilliantly elucidates how Athenian politics were 'gendered' in the Classical period. She investigates the Athenian state's interdiction of ritualized mourning by women . . . (and) . . . illuminates . . . the institutional suppression of women as a political and social force in the most flourishing period of Athenian history".--Laura M. Slatkin, University of Chicago.

Losing a child is the biggest fear of any parent. But The Beauty of a Grieving Mother is NOT about fear. In this anthology, ten broken-hearted mothers step ahead of their fears and share their life stories about love, courage, hope, and survival after the loss of their child. These mothers have different lifestyles and backgrounds. Their children left in different ways and at different ages. These women grieve differently. But what they share is the deepest feeling of love for their beautiful children and a strong desire to continue their legacies. When you grieve the loss of a child you develop a brand new feeling where pain and joy coexist. They intermingle. They become inseparable. The beauty of that unique feeling is that the ugly pain makes the joy profound. Your suffering makes you feel a deep gratitude. The pain of a grieving mother is beautiful, but nobody can grasp it but the grieving mother. Find strength, love, and beauty in the stories of these mothers and their children. Though the journey after the loss of a child may feel lonely, it is not one that must be traveled alone.

Caring for their mothers at the end of their lives and grieving for them after their deaths brought them together. Seven women from diverse racial, cultural, and religious traditions with differing sexual orientations and life experiences became seven “sisters in mourning,” meeting to share their grief and to remember together—not only their mothers but themselves as daughters. This book is a rich compilation of narratives that emerged through vulnerable conversations—a spiritual, emotional, and existential exploration of the complexities of caring and grieving. As their grief transformed over time, and their friendship deepened, their understanding of who their mothers were and the nuances of their relationships with them continued to evolve. Sisters in Mourning invites readers to a journey of healing and insight. With contributions from: Barbara Breitman Cari Jackson Linda Jaramillo Laura O'Loughlin Kathleen T. Talvacchia

Mothers Of Heroes Mothers Of Martyrs written by Suzanne Evans and has been published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Family & Relationships categories.

Suzanne Evans finds commonalities between the many images of war mothers - the Canadian Silver Cross mother, the ancient Jewish Maccabean mother of seven martyred sons, the mother of a Palestinian suicide bomber. She compares the lore about mothers of martyrs in the Judeo-Christian, Muslim, and Sikh traditions with stories of World War I Canadian mothers who were depicted in the media as having sacrificed their sons for the sake of civilization, justice, freedom, and God. After the war these mothers were honoured with the Silver Cross medal. Evans argues that, like the mothers of past martyrs, the image of the war-supportive mother in Canada had a powerful influence over public opinion and drew supporters to the cause.

When Diane Sher Lutovich set out to attain closure of her mother's death she simultaneously discovered how other women address their losses. "Nobody's Child: How Older Women Say Good-bye to Their Mothers", in poetry and prose, tells the big and little stories of women who, having come of age during the feminist revolution, lived very different lives than their mothers. The author addresses the guilt a daughter feels when confronted by her mother's life choices, the loss of family history and a belated recognition of her mother's legacy. The voices are heard within these pages, giving occasion for the reader to learn about the multiplicity of feelings-including remorse, fear, frustration, compassion, and deep admiration-that many daughters experience at their mother's passing.

Written by a grief counselor and educator, this book is for those who have loved and lost their mother. Losing a mother is a difficult transition in life. No matter the status of the relationship, grieving the loss is a process--one that sometimes begins before the physical loss has occurred. Drawing on his own experience of loss, as well as on the experiences of others, Harold Ivan Smith guides readers through their grief, from the process of dying through the acts of remembering and honoring a mother after her death. This book provides a way forward. By shifting the grief process from something to rush through, Smith encourages readers to embrace their grief as a natural response to loss and to give themselves time to work through the sadness, pain, memories, and reality of living without their mom. All of us will experience the loss of our mother at some point. A mother's last breath inevitably changes us. Through wise counsel, Smith speaks gently to people who have gone through this loss and helps those yet to face it. This edition includes a new foreword from the author.

After a mother's death, a daughter embarks on a personal journey of grief and healing. Hope Edelman shared her journey in Motherless Daughters; afterward, she received letters from motherless women all over the world who felt compelled to share their own stories of mother loss. Comforted by the shared experiences that appeared in the book, they wanted to hear more from women like them. Letters from Motherless Daughters was created to fulfill that request, and now, in this updated edition, Hope compiles letters received over the two decades since the publication of her New York Times bestseller. In their own voices, these daughters--ranging in age from thirteen to seventy-eight--share their journeys of mourning and regeneration. Beginning with the initial period of adjustment and acceptance, covering the first years after a mother's death, and describing lives shaped by loss more than twenty years later, these letters reflect the challenges and triumphs motherless girls and women face over time. The words of these brave women illustrate the profound pain, astounding strength, and personal growth inherent in living through the loss of a mother--without ever outliving the need for her.

Crossing The River written by Carol Smith and has been published by Abrams this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-05-04 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

A powerful exploration of grief and resilience following the death of the author's son that combines memoir, reportage, and lessons in how to heal Everyone deals with grief in their own way. Helen Macdonald found solace in training a wild goshawk. Cheryl Strayed found strength in hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. For Carol Smith, a Pulitzer Prize nominated journalist struggling with the sudden death of her seven-year-old son, Christopher, the way to cross the river of sorrow was through work. In Crossing the River, Smith recounts how she faced down her crippling loss through reporting a series of profiles of people coping with their own intense challenges, whether a life-altering accident, injury, or diagnosis. These were stories of survival and transformation, of people facing devastating situations that changed them in unexpected ways. Smith deftly mixes the stories of these individuals and their families with her own account of how they helped her heal. General John Shalikashvili, once the most powerful member of the American military, taught Carol how to face fear with discipline and endurance. Seth, a young boy with a rare and incurable illness, shed light on the totality of her son's experiences, and in turn helps readers see that the value of a life is not measured in days. Crossing the River is a beautiful and profoundly moving book, an unforgettable journey through grief toward hope, and a valuable, illuminating read for anyone coping with loss.

My only son was murdered in December 2012 and I was having a very hard time dealing with my grief. I looked into councelling groups but the meetings were held on week nights, and this was impossilbe for me as I work an afternoon shift. I would come home from work and write how I felt in a notepad, as I was doing this, my expressions of grief were coming out in poems. I began posting my expressions of my grief on my facebook page., my family would comment on how beautiful they were, and that maybe I should consider publishing them in a book. I thought no who would really want to read about my grief and how I hurt inside. Then I found a facebook page for grieving mothers and began posting my expressions there. In no time so many grieving mothers from all over were wanting to share my poems. They had all encouraged my to write my expressions in a book and thats what I've done. For all the grieving mothers in the world this is from my heart.
