The research seeks to determine which motivational factors influence international student athletes in committing to an American institution in order to participate in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The study will examine which factors play an important role in college choice for these individuals. Most research indicates that the primary motivation for international student-athletes to come to American colleges is to receive an education while being on athletic scholarships (Bale, 1991, Ridinger, 1996; Stidwell, 1984). The research will serve to support previous findings and to reveal other motivational factors which influence college choice for international student-athletes. By exploratory factor analysis the major influences which play a role in the student-athlete's decision to commit to an American university or college will be identified. Due to the controversial and opinionated nature of the topic of international student-athletes, the need for research is supported. Questionnaires will be conducted online by both male and female international student-athletes participating in all NCAA sports at universities and colleges of three BCS Conferences. Data on motivational factors will be collected in order to identify which motives drive athletes to participate in their respective NCAA institutions. Once the questionnaires are collected, the major motivational factors will be identified and comparisons of findings will be made between male and female athletes and athletes participating in different sports. Expected results should support previous findings that student-athletes are influenced highly by academic factors, as well as by the chance to participate in highly competitive leagues (Bale, 1991; Garbert, Hale & Montalyo, 1999). Literature on international student-athletes is limited and due to the increase in numbers and popularity of recruiting international athletes to the NCAA, it is important to examine the issues concerning the topic. Without knowing why the international student-athletes come to American colleges and universities, recruiting could become more challenging and retaining these students through matriculation of their degree could become difficult. This study will provide a significant contribution to the literature regarding influencing factors in college choice and will be vital to athletic departments at NCAA institutions in order to aid in recruiting international student-athletes.

MOTIVATION, ACHIEVEMENT ORIENTATION, AND COMPETITION IN COLLEGIATE TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETES by Kimberly S. Woodson June, 2014 Director of Thesis: Dr. Nicholas Murray Major Department: Kinesiology (Sport Psychology) Competition and motivation are important components of sports. Based on Self-Determination Theory and Cognitive Evaluation Theory (Deci &Ryan, 1985), this study had four purposes. The purposes of the current study were to: a) evaluating gender differences in preferences toward internal or external competition b) examining the relationship of competition preferences and sport achievement orientations with motivation type c) investigating the motivational profiles of athletes based on their competition preference towards internal and external competition and d) exploring gender differences in motivation and sport achievement orientations. Participants (N=142) were NCAA Division-I collegiate track and field athletes from various universities throughout the United States. The participants completed a measures assessing a demographic, a motivation type (Behavioral Regulation in Sport Questionnaire; BRSQ), sport achievement orientation (Sport Orientation Questionnaire; SOQ) and competition preference (Internal and External Competition Questionnaire; IECQ). Paired- samples t-tests, Pearson correlation and various ANOVAs were conducted to analyze the data. Results of the study indicated that a) both male and female track and field athletes have a higher preference for external competition than internal competition b) internal and external competition preference and sport achievement orientation variables were positively related to one or more self- determined motivational variables (intrinsic, integrated or identified motivation), c) three distinct competition preference groups were identified and there are motivational differences between the groups d) women had higher levels of self-determined forms of motivation than males, but no significant differences were found in sport achievement orientation. The results are discussed in relative to the Self-Determination Theory and Cognitive Evaluation Theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985).

Author's abstract: Recent data indicates that college student athletes are graduating at higher rates than their non-student athlete peers; however, among student athletes in general, revenue sport student athletes are well below other college sport student athletes in terms of academic performance. One variable that has shown to have a connection with academic performance among college student athletes is academic motivation. An area within academic motivational research that has not been investigated is how a revenue sport student athlete’s time commitment to their sport (competition and non-competition semester) influences their academic motivation. Additionally, the large majority of research assessing academic motivation among college student athletes analyzed academic motivation at one point in time rather than throughout a time period. Conversely, this study examined academic motivation several times within an academic year, rather than at a single point in time. The study also aimed to determine if academic motivation among NCAA Division I football players is significantly different during their competition semester compared to their non-competition semester and if academic motivation changed from month to month within each semester. The researcher created a survey entitled the College Student‐Athlete Academic Motivation Survey (CSAAM-S) which examined academic motivation among 75 NCAA Division I football players during three months within a given semester. Using a repeated measures ANOVA, it was discovered that the football players had higher levels of academic motivation within their non-competition semester (Spring 2013) compared to their competition semester (Fall 2012). Also, differences were found in academic motivation for each month within the competition semester and the non-competition semester. Additionally, race/ethnicity, athletic standing, and scholarship type were also found to yield different levels of academic motivation among the football players. From a practical standpoint, investigating academic motivation through moments of time rather than a single moment of time can lead to a better understanding of the concept of academic motivation. Results from the study will be noteworthy in providing more information to campus leaders and athletic department administrators in order to develop, implement, and better time academic motivational programs for NCAA Division I football players.

The question is; How do NCAA Division III female college athletes describe their motivation to participate in athletics? This study documents the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation of Division III female athletes. It differentiates self-motivation of team sport athletes compared to individual sport athletes. The author uses research literature to focus on intrinsic and extrinsic motivation as well as coaching factors. Then the author uses a validated Self-Motivation Inventory (SMI) and interviews to describe the motivation of current Division III female athletes. Abstract: The investigation was designed to determine whether athletic participation was beneficial or a hindrance to college academic performance. A comparison between the academic performance of male and female student-athletes (n = 78) and non-athletes (n = 77) from an NCAA Division III institution in New England was conducted using the Noncognitive Questionnaire (NCQ), GPA, and SAT scores. A total of eight 2 x 2 independent groups factorial ANOVAs were conducted to examine whether or not differences existed between male and female student-athletes and non-athletes with regard to GPA, SAT scores, and the six NCQ subscales. Correlations between the six NCQ subscales, GPA, and SAT scores were conducted for all participants. Male student-athletes reported a mean GPA of 3.08 + .41; male non-athletes reported 3.06 + .57; female student-athletes reported 3.11 + .47; female non-athletes reported 3.38 + .46. Non-athletes scored significantly (p
