The research seeks to determine which motivational factors influence international student athletes in committing to an American institution in order to participate in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The study will examine which factors play an important role in college choice for these individuals. Most research indicates that the primary motivation for international student-athletes to come to American colleges is to receive an education while being on athletic scholarships (Bale, 1991, Ridinger, 1996; Stidwell, 1984). The research will serve to support previous findings and to reveal other motivational factors which influence college choice for international student-athletes. By exploratory factor analysis the major influences which play a role in the student-athlete's decision to commit to an American university or college will be identified. Due to the controversial and opinionated nature of the topic of international student-athletes, the need for research is supported. Questionnaires will be conducted online by both male and female international student-athletes participating in all NCAA sports at universities and colleges of three BCS Conferences. Data on motivational factors will be collected in order to identify which motives drive athletes to participate in their respective NCAA institutions. Once the questionnaires are collected, the major motivational factors will be identified and comparisons of findings will be made between male and female athletes and athletes participating in different sports. Expected results should support previous findings that student-athletes are influenced highly by academic factors, as well as by the chance to participate in highly competitive leagues (Bale, 1991; Garbert, Hale & Montalyo, 1999). Literature on international student-athletes is limited and due to the increase in numbers and popularity of recruiting international athletes to the NCAA, it is important to examine the issues concerning the topic. Without knowing why the international student-athletes come to American colleges and universities, recruiting could become more challenging and retaining these students through matriculation of their degree could become difficult. This study will provide a significant contribution to the literature regarding influencing factors in college choice and will be vital to athletic departments at NCAA institutions in order to aid in recruiting international student-athletes.

During the 2004-05 school year, over 10,000 international student-athletes competed for National Collegiate Athletic Association schools (NCAA, 2006b). Few researchers have examined how international student-athletes' college experiences compare to domestic student-athletes. The purpose of this study was threefold: (a) to detect differences between international and domestic student-athletes in regards to adaptation to college, (b) to detect differences between international and domestic student-athletes in regards to their view of the purpose of college sports, and (c) to determine whether student-athletes' views on the purpose of college sport help predict social adjustment to college or institutional attachment. A national sample of international and domestic student-athletes from 11 NCAA Division I institutions completed an instrument comprised of the social adjustment and institutional attachment scales from the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (Baker and Siryk, 1989) and the seven factor scales from a modified version of the Purpose of Sport Questionnaire developed by Duda (1989). A total of 288 student-athletes completed the instrument, 174 of whom were international student-athletes representing 49 different countries. Results showed international student-athletes scored significantly lower on the social adjustment and institutional attachment scales compared to domestic studentathletes. Among the seven purpose of sport factors, only the factor of competitiveness revealed a statistically significant difference between the two groups, with international student-athletes ranking the factor lower than domestic student-athletes. None of the purpose of sport factors significantly predicted social adjustment to college for either domestic or international student-athletes. Several purpose of sport factors significantly predicted institutional attachment, however. A discussion of results and their implications are outlined.

The purpose of this research is to examine factors influencing the academic success of student athletes participating in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA); a growing and largely unstudied group of students. This study uses institutional data collected for the NAIA's Return on Athletics® initiative in 2019-2020 as well as, data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). Five research questions used logistic regression to explore factors that influence student athlete retention, graduation, differences for varsity and non-varsity athletes, for various levels of academic performance, and athletic scholarship totals. All data were analyzed using STATA. The findings from this study are that while overall, student athletes represented in this data set are retained at a high rate, certain sub-groups may be at risk for attrition. Specifically, non-varsity athletes are less likely retained. Additionally, student athletes with a grade point average below a 3.0 or those who have been enrolled at an institution for less than five semesters are less likely to be retained. Black student athletes were found to be more likely to complete degrees and graduation was found to be positively influenced by financial aid in the form of work-study. Lastly, results of this research indicate the Return on Athletics® data initiative is a viable tool for analyzing factors that influence student athlete success. Based on the findings of this research, this paper includes recommendations for continued and improved Return on Athletics® data collection. Additionally, recommendations are provided for targeting student athlete success initiatives at specific sub-groups of the population who may be particularly at risk for retention issues. Finally, in an effort to build on this research and advance student athlete academic success, suggestions for future research are included.

This dissertation examined the correlation between background demographic variables, high school academic variables, college situational variables, and noncognitive variables (independent variables), and academic motivation and the balance between academic and athletic motivation (dependent variables) for first-semester student athletes competing at a highly competitive Division I athletic program. The literature review established a foundation for the need of this study based on theoretical and empirical research, and the development of more stringent academic benchmarks and progress-monitoring legislation recently introduced by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). A hierarchical regression design was created to investigate the correlations between the independent variables and academic motivation and balance between academic motivation and athletic motivation. Participants completed a survey comprised of an inventory of background variables, the Noncognitive Questionnaire (NCQ), and the Student Athletes' Motivation toward Sports and Academics Questionnaire (SAMSAQ). The dependent variables of academic motivation and balance score were derived from subscales of the SAMSAQ. The score for academic motivation was represented by the score on the Academic Motivation subscale of the SAMSAQ. The value for balance score was created by computing the difference score between the Academic Motivation and Student Athletic Motivation subscale scores of the SAMSAQ. There were 185 participants representing 29 different sports who took the battery of surveys during the first week of classes in the fall of 2006. The results of the study indicate that three independent variables were positively and significantly correlated with balance score: high school grade point average, parent level of education, and the NCQ subscale Knowledge Acquired in a Field (which measures culturally-related educational experiences outside of school). The NCQ subscale Dealing with Racism was found to have a positive and significant correlation with academic motivation. The discussion section analyzes the results of the current study, as well as examines how the current findings relate to past theoretical and empirical research. The discussion section also outlines implications for practice for high school and college professionals and suggestions for future research.

The National College Athlete Association (NCAA) reports ever-increasing numbers of students participating in collegiate sports. As the demand for and intensity of collegiate sports continue to grow, there is a need to understand the sport enviornment and assist in the development of environments conducive to the well-being of student-athletes. This study used the vocational and industrial-organizational theory of person-environment fit to concptualize the collegiate sport environment as it shares numerous characteristics with a work environment. This study examined the relationships between the perceived cohesion student-athletes experience with their coaches and teammates and their motivation to perform. The impact of three moderators (athletic identity, sex, and sport type) on the cohesion - motivation relationship was also examined. Using data collected from 219 male and female collegiate student-athletes, hierarchical multiple regressions tested the effects of the perceived coach-athlete relationship and team-athlete relationship on predicting athletes' motivation to perform as well as the moderating effects of athletic identity, sex, and sport type. The athletes' perceived coach-athlete cohesion, team-athlete cohesion, and athletic identity (i.e., the degree to which an individual identifies with the athlete role) predicted the intrinsic and self-determined motivation levels of student-athletes. Athletic identity moderated the relationship between perceived team-athlete cohesion and motivation; sport type moderated the relationship between perceived coach-athlete cohesion and motivation. For student-athletes who reported a low athletic identity, perceived cohesion with their team was more predictive of their motivation levels than it was for those who had higher athletic identity. The degree to which they perceived cohesion with coach was more strongly predictive of self-determined motivation levels for student-athletes of individual sports compared to student-athletes involved in team sports. Clinical implications of the findings and future research are discussed.
