La ricerca presentata nel libro mette in relazione per la prima volta due fenomeni separati, ma dialetticamente collegati, che segnano il nostro mondo contemporaneo: la finanziarizzazione dell’agricoltura e i Movimenti Agrari Transnazionali. Nel contesto dello spazio della governance globale dell’agricoltura, questi due aspetti vengono messi in relazione per analizzare come si plasmano a vicenda attraverso una lettura originale della teoria del Sistema Mondo, degli International Critical Agrarian Studies e dell’approccio della “governance non territoriale”. Ne emerge un’analisi che inquadra gli attuali negoziati sul clima e sulla biodiversità e l’avanzata dei “nuovi OGM” all’interno dell’agroecologia come un confronto per un’ulteriore penetrazione del capitale all’interno dell’agricoltura contadina attraverso l’appropriazione della biodiversità mondiale, l’abbassamento del costo di produzione del cibo e di conseguenza quello dei salari di sussistenza e di riproduzione del sistema, generando una nuova fase di espansione materiale dell’economia. Questo confronto tende a risolvere la dicotomia tra diritti di proprietà intellettuale e diritti collettivi alle risorse naturali dell’attuale governance globale dell’agricoltura in due possibili direzioni: a favore dei diritti di proprietà intellettuale attraverso l’appropriazione della biodiversità mondiale che costituisce il fondamento dell’agricoltura contadina, oppure a favore dei diritti collettivi alle risorse naturali lasciando esaurire l’attuale sistema di accumulazione del capitale.

The terms 'global' and 'civil society' have both become part of the contemporary political lexicon. In this important new book, Mary Kaldor argues that this is no coincidence and that the reinvention of civil society has to be understood in the context of globalization. The concept of civil society is no longer confined to the borders of the territorial state. Whether one considers dissidents in repressive regimes, landless labourers in Central America, campaigners against land mines or global debt, or even religious fundamentalists, it is now possible for them to link up with other like-minded groups in different parts of the world and to address demands not just to national governments but to global institutions as well. This has opened up new opportunities for human emancipation, and, in particular, for going beyond war as a way of managing global affairs. But it also entails new risks and insecurities. This is a book about a political idea - an idea that came out of the 1989 revolutions. This global status report on prevention and control of NCDs (2014), is framed around the nine voluntary global targets.
