Uma das características do Movimento social é a contestação, ela opera em nível de relações sociais, cujos determinantes se localizam na instância das relações sociais de produção. Os problemas de bairro nascem no âmbito das relações de produção na cidade. Mas não é só a deficiência dos bens e serviços de consumo coletivo que provoca os problemas dos moradores. Os baixos salários inviabilizam muito dos serviços à disposição: embora os serviços sejam gratuitos, muitos não tem sequer condições de pagar o transporte, ou de arcar com os gastos decorrentes de seu uso. A saúde e a educação dependem basicamente de uma boa alimentação, que não pode ser custeada pela reduzida renda familiar do trabalhador. Dentro desse quadro geral é impossível solucionar o problema do morador, sem passar por soluções no âmbito das relações sociais de produção.

O livro Trabalhadores urbanos: experiências coletivas no novo sindicalismo documenta uma inspiradora trajetória do processo de sindicalização de profissionais no contexto do novo sindicalismo implementado pela Central Única dos Trabalhadores no final do século XX. O livro resgata a experiência vivida e a organização política e sindical dos trabalhadores das categorias Bancários e Comerciários no estado do Piauí. A autora, que também foi presidente do Sindicato dos Assistentes Sociais na década de 1980, promove uma reflexão quando dá o enfoque às experiências coletivas desses trabalhadores e procura apreender as articulações e mediações que esse processo organizativo estabeleceu e estabelece no contexto social e conjuntural no qual se localizou, compreendendo como marco de análise dos anos 80 até o final da década de 1990. A obra constrói um percurso analítico privilegiando a experiência dos comerciários e bancários do Piauí, categorias profissionais vinculadas ao setor de serviços o qual vem alcançando expansão na economia do estado, mas que podem ser facilmente extrapoladas para outras categorias e diferentes contextos estaduais. Neste espaço, a força organizativa desses trabalhadores vem contribuindo para um redirecionamento nas relações entre capital e trabalho. Esta obra compreende uma análise histórica coletivamente construída com a participação dos próprios sujeitos acerca das gestões sindicais concretizadas, tendo por fundamento a nova perspectiva sindical, assumida como programa e como prática política. Como curiosidade, alguns personagens entrevistados durante a pesquisa que deu origem ao livro ocupam ou ocuparam cargos estratégicos de Governança nos diversos níveis. Um dos atores é o atual Governador do Estado do Piauí, Wellington de Araújo Dias (reeleito pela 4a vez), mandato: 2018-2022. Por fim, acredita-se que a contribuição desses trabalhadores no movimento mais amplo de rearticulação do sindicalismo na realidade piauiense, e na sua relação com o contexto nacional, foi fundamental para o posicionamento desse segmento sindical diante dos desafios postos pelas mudanças sociais, econômicas e políticas no final do século XX, ao tempo em que lançam as bases para novos enfrentamentos em tempos turbulentos na consolidação de direitos dos trabalhadores que vivenciamos na atual conjuntura no Brasil e no mundo, de total colapso do atual sistema capitalista.

Beginning in the late 1970s, activists from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro challenged the conditions—such as limited access to security, sanitation, public education, and formal employment—that separated favela residents from Rio's other citizens. The activists built a movement that helped to push the nation toward redemocratization. They joined with political allies in an effort to institute an ambitious slate of municipal reforms. Those measures ultimately fell short of aspirations, and soon the reformers were struggling to hold together a fraying coalition. Rio was bankrupted by natural disasters and hyperinflation and ravaged by drug wars. Well-armed drug traffickers had become the new lords of the favelas, protecting their turf through violence and patronage. By the early 1990s, the promise of the favela residents' mobilization of the late 1970s and early 1980s seemed out of reach. Yet the aspirations that fueled that mobilization have endured, and its legacy continues to shape favela politics in Rio de Janeiro.
