Moving an archive, historical society, or rare book library may occur only once in the career of a professional curator, archivist or librarian. Not only is each situation unique, but collections are irreplaceable and priceless. Moving Archives is a timely source of useful information by eleven archivists who have recent experience moving both collections and entire repositories. They describe their physical and administrative situations, details of their holdings, plans for their move, actual operations, successes, failures, and lessons learned. Readers will enjoy the clear, systematic, rational and sometimes humorous accounts of how these professionals coped. Each archivist speaks in his or her own voice, often with considerable individuality about what was intended, what processes occurred, and what result, in terms of an organized collection in a new location, finally emerged. Topics Include: - Planning - Administrative coordination - Staffing (both contract and institutional) - Security preservation - Transportation methods - Boxing and shelving - Accidents and natural disasters You'll get pertinent advice about: - How to plan for trouble - How to avoid the well-meaning "assistance" of administrators and volunteers - How to maintain control and good humor throughout.

Cataloging standards practiced within the traditional library, archive and museum environments are not interoperable for the retrieval of objects within the shared online environment. Within today’s information environments, library, archive and museum professionals are becoming aware that all information objects can be linked together. In this way, information professionals have the opportunity to collaborate and share data together with the shard online cataloging environment, the end result being improved retrieval effectiveness. But the adaptation has been slow: Libraries, archives and museums are still operating within their own community-specific cataloging practices. This book provides a historical perspective of the evolution of linking devices within the library, archive, and museums environments, and captures current cataloging practices in these fields. It offers suggestions for moving beyond community-specific cataloging principles and thus has the potential of becoming a springboard for further conversation and the sharing of ideas.

The image of the dusty, undisturbed archive has been swept away in response to growing interest across disciplines in the materials they house and the desire to find and make meaning through an engagement with those materials. Archival studies scholars and archivists are developing related theoretical frameworks and practices that recognize that the archives are anything but static. Archival deposits are proliferating, and the architects, practitioners, and scholars engaged with them are scarcely able to keep abreast of them. Archives, archival theory, and archival practice are on the move. But what of the archives that were once safely housed and have since been lost, or are under threat? What of the urgency that underscores the appeals made on behalf of these archives? As scholars in this volume argue, archives—their materialization, their preservation, and the research produced about them—are moving in a different way: they are involved in an emotionally engaged and charged process, one that acts equally upon archival subjects and those engaged with them. So too do archives at once represent members of various communities and the fields of study drawn to them. Moving Archives grounds itself in the critical trajectory related to what Sara Ahmed calls “affective economies” to offer fresh insights about the process of archiving and approaching literary materials. These economies are not necessarily determined by ethical impulses, although many scholars have called out for such impulses to underwrite current archival practices; rather, they form the crucial affective contexts for the legitimization of archival caches in the present moment and for future use.

Developing Archives and Special Collections details the strategies and obstacles in moving from a relatively disorganized archive, reminiscent of an attic, to an organized and robustly integrated digital presence. It details the process of developing an archive, from inception to completion. The book is broken down into six parts, beginning with an introduction to the Stevens Institute. The second part covers gaining intellectual control over the archive through discovery, conceptualization, and planning. The third part covers processing, physically arranging the collection, product over process, and basic materials preservation. The fourth part covers using descriptions standards, accessioning, and creating finding aids and container lists. The fifth part considers digital collections, creation, diversifying, and creating a web of digital collections. The book also considers partnerships in marketing and outreach, including innovative thinking, developing advocates for your library, and how to make your work accessible to others. Gives a model for developing an archive from the ground up into a digital presence Suggests a realistic vision for smaller archives, recognizing budgetary constraints Provides practical applications that include processing concepts, basic conservation, digital collection tools, and marketing ideas

Since its original publication Hunter's manual has been "not only a rich and ready reference tool but also a practical resource for solving problems" (Catholic Library World), and no text has served as a better overview of the field of archives. Newly revised and updated to more thoroughly address our increasingly digital world, including integration of digital records and audiovisual records into each chapter, it remains the clearest and most comprehensive guide to the discipline. Former editor of American Archivist, the journal of the Society of American Archivists (SAA), Hunter covers such keystone topics as a history of archives, including the roles of historical societies and local history collections in libraries; new sections on community archives, diversity, and inclusion; conducting a survey and starting an archival program; selection, appraisal, acquisition, accessioning, and deaccessioning; important points of copyright, privacy, and ethics; arrangement of archival collections, with a discussion of new theories; description, including DACS, EAD, and tools such as ArchivesSpace; access, reference, and outreach, with a look at how recent innovations in finding aids can help researchers; preservation, including guidance on how to handle rare books, maps, architectural records, and artifacts; digital records, addressing new and popular methods of storage and preservation of email, social media, image files, webpages, Word documents, spreadsheets, databases, and media files; disaster planning, security, and theft prevention; metrics, assessment, establishing employee procedures and policies, working with interns and volunteers, and other managerial duties; public relations and marketing, from social media and the Web to advocacy; and professional guidelines and codes, such as the newly developed SAA Statement of Core Values of Archivists. Providing in-depth coverage of both theory and practice, this manual is essential for archivists at all levels of experience and of all backgrounds.
