If you are an outgoing, positive, can-do type of person, I think you'll love calling Charlotte home. Relocating families might tell you that they love the growing job market, low cost of living and four-season climate, or the range of neighborhoods from urban to rural, good public and private schools and universities. Members of Charlotte's burgeoning creative class may tell you that they love the funky in-town neighborhoods like No-Da, live music venues like the Music Factory, Neighborhood Theater and the Double Door, our proximity to mountains and beaches and access to an amazing array of outdoor activities. Retirees might mention our abundant churches, the highly-respected health care system, Charlotte's many museums and cultural opportunities, as well as one of the nation's best airports to get their grandchildren here for a visit. Business owners would probably mention Charlotte's well-educated, productive workforce, our resilient, diversified economy, good transportation system, and our active Chamber of Commerce that helps integrate them into the Charlotte business scene. All good reasons to be sure. As a native whose family has been here since 1751, my thoughts on why Charlotte is a great place to live may differ from the newcomer's. I love Charlotte for its people. The area was first settled by forward-thinking, optimistic, hard-working and welcoming folk. Religious and highly independent people with a charitable bent shaped this town and region. Their fingerprints remain on our collective souls.

Charlotte Collins, wife of the Parson and mistress of Hunsford Parsonage for not yet one year, was a very happy woman indeed who occasionally pinched herself at disbelief at the sudden, extraordinary change in circumstances that had made her so. She admired Rosings, a large handsome dwelling some hundreds of yards down the lane from the Parsonage, but only the exterior. She considered everything within it too large and too grand for human comfort. Since she went infrequently, she demonstrated a proper respect, and then returned gratefully to the beloved Parsonage. Since she saw little to admire and much to criticise, she simply reminded herself, frequently, that Lady Catherine against all expectation and logic had bestowed a valuable Benefice upon an unknown, untried priest. Thus, at a remove, giving Charlotte the home and life that she loved and cherished. Her gratitude for that was beyond expressing.

‘Moving the Mountain’ (1911) is a novel by American feminist and writer, Charlotte Gilman. It is the first book of her classic utopian feminist trilogy that includes ‘Herland’ (1915) and ‘With Her in Our Land’ (1916). After suffering from memory loss due to an accident during his trip to Tibet at the age of 25, John Robertson is eventually found by his sister Nellie thirty years later. She helps him recover his memory, but on returning home to America, John is shocked to discover that much has changed and women are now emancipated. Can he learn to accept equality of the sexes and that the misogynist views of his youth no longer exist? Readers looking for a utopian twist on Margaret Atwood's ́The Handmaid's Tale ́ will love ́Moving the Mountain ́! Charlotte Perkins Gilman, also known as Charlotte Perkins Stetson (1860-1935), was an American feminist, writer, publisher and advocate for social reform. She wrote novels, short stories, poetry, and nonfiction, and has served as a role model for future generations of feminists. She is best remembered for her semi-autobiographical short story, ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ (1899), which she wrote after suffering a severe bout of post-childbirth depression. Other notable works include her feminist utopian trilogy, ‘Moving the Mountain’ (1911), ‘Herland’ (1915), and ‘With Her in Our Land’ (1916). Gilman also published a collection of poems addressing women’s issues, called ‘In This Our World’ (1993).
