Mozart's Ghosts traces the many lives of this great composer that emerged following his early death in 1791. Crossing national boundaries and traversing two hundred years-worth of interpretation and reception, author Mark Everist investigates how Mozart's past status can be understood as part of today's veneration. Everist forges new paths to reach the composer, examining a number of ways in which Western culture has absorbed the idea of Mozart, how various cultural agents have appropriated, deployed, and exploited Mozart toward both authoritarian and subversive ends, and how the figure of Mozart and his impact illuminate the cultural history of the last two centuries in Europe, England, and America. Modern reverence for the composer is conditioned by earlier responses to his music, and Everist argues that such earlier responses are more complex than allowed by a simple "reception studies" model. Closely linking nine case studies in an innovative cultural and theoretical framework, the book approaches the developing reputation of the composer from death to the present day along three paths: "Phantoms of the Opera" deals with stage music, "Holy Spirits" addresses the trope of the sacred, and "Specters at the Feast" considers the impact of Mozart's music in literature and film. Mozart's Ghosts adeptly moves the study of Mozart reception away from hagiography and closer to cultural and historical criticism, and will be avidly read by Mozart scholars and students of eighteenth-century music history, as well as literary critics, historians of philosophy and aesthetics, and cultural historians in general.

Meet Anna, a thirty-something living alone in New York City. A schoolteacher by day, by night she works as a medium, covertly helping people reunite with their lost loved ones. Edward's music fills Anna's apartment with beautiful sounds that disturb her concentration and her lines of communication with spirits. Romance blossoms, but Anna is conflicted: by exposing her true identity, does she risk losing what may be her true love? and is music really his true love? What IS opera? Contributors to The Oxford Handbook of Opera respond to this deceptively simple question with a rich and compelling exploration of opera's adaption to changing artistic and political currents. Fifty of the world's most respected scholars cast opera as a fluid entity that continuously reinvents itself in a reflection of its patrons, audience, and creators. The synergy of power, performance, and identity recurs thematically throughout the volume's major topics: Words, Music, and Meaning; Performance and Production; Opera and Society; and Transmission and Reception. Individual essays engage with repertoire from Monteverdi, Mozart, and Meyerbeer to Strauss, Henze, and Adams in studies of composition, national identity, transmission, reception, sources, media, iconography, humanism, the art of collecting, theory, analysis, commerce, singers, directors, criticism, editions, politics, staging, race, and gender. The title of the penultimate section, Opera on the Edge, suggests the uncertainty of opera's future: is opera headed toward catastrophe or have social and musical developments of the last hundred years stimulated something new and exciting, and, well, operatic? In an epilogue to the volume, a contemporary opera composer speaks candidly about opera composition today. The Oxford Handbook of Opera is an essential companion to scholars, educators, advanced students, performers, and knowledgeable listeners: those who simply love opera.

Not since Kiss of the Spider Woman has a story about the effects of persecution on the human mind interwoven fantastic and realistic elements as effectively. A story of biting irony and bitter satire, leaning heavily on Nabokov s Pale Fire, Ghost Rider addresses contemporary social concerns with its elegant, crisp prose. The protagonist has no name and no identity. Together with her memory, they have been taken in a Latin American war. When she falls for a famous rider, she must descend into the pits of her past, to tell him her story, and is forced to add new chapters as she peels away hidden layers of herself. Initially, there seems to be nothing wrong with her, except for a strange affinity for ghosts. Her memories of fear-filled nights take her back to Peru, into the vengeful mind of an executed man. Claiming she has killed him, he tries to convince her of the advantages of being dead. To banish him, she sets music against her blood-reeking past. When she finally succeeds, she is eighty-two. But it might be a dream, like the rest of her story, or her final nightmare. Nothing rules out that she could awake in the torture chamber, facing her final hour.

The plays of Shakespeare are filled with ghosts - and ghost writing. Shakespeare's Ghost Writers is an examination of the authorship controversy surrounding Shakespeare: the claim made repeatedly that the plays were ghost written. Ghosts take the form of absences, erasures, even forgeries and signatures - metaphors extended to include Shakespeare himself and his haunting of us, and in particular theorists such Derrida, Marx, Nietzsche, and Freud - the figure of Shakespeare constantly made and remade by contemporary culture. Marjorie Garber, one of the most eminent Shakespearean theorists writing today, asks what is at stake in the imputation that "Shakespeare" did not write the plays, and shows that the plays themselves both thematize and theorize that controversy. This Routledge Classics edition contains a new preface and new chapter by the author.

Ghost Stories By British And American Women written by Lynette Carpenter and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-01-28 with Literary Criticism categories.

Originally published in 1998 and covering a tradition ignored by most critics, this bibliography assembles and documents a large body of supernatural fiction written by women in English from the end of the 18th century to the present. These stories, the work of women whose literary reputations, personal histories, and bodies of work vary widely, challenge the narrow way in which supernatural literature has traditionally been regarded: they indicate a much richer and more complex set of literary responses to the supernatural than has been hitherto acknowledged. The writers included range from Ann Radcliffe and the Gothic novelists to Louisa May Alcott, Charlotte Gilman, and Edith Wharton to such modern writers as Elizabeth Bowen, Jean Rhys, Muriel Spark, and A.S. Byatt. The volume will be of interest to literary and cultural historians and of particular importance to women's studies scholars.
