Murder and bad publicity stalk the inhabitants of Inglewood Turrets, the outrageous Victorian mansion where Lottie Cambric has recreated the best of the turn of the century for wealthy foreign culture-vultures. But when it becomes evident that this is a matter of highest state security the inimitable Mr. Campion takes a hand.

Inglewood Turrets, in the north of London, is the sort of faux-Victorian-genteel hotel that pays homage to a past that never really existed. But the tourists love it. Or some of them do. Vassily Kopeck (code-name: "Farthing"), a Russian diplomat, has disappeared after a trip to the Turrets, and Mr. Campion has been asked to sort out the situation. It's a challenge, but he has an able assistant: Young Rupert Campion, making his debut appearance!

Inglewood Turrets in the leafy outskirts of North London, a cross between St Pancreas Station and Holloway Gaol, is where the formidable Miss Charlotte Cambric recreates Victorian elegance for foreign culture-vultures. Vassily Kopeck, the half-Russian, half-Polish physicist and an 'attache of sorts', disappears after a visit to The Turrets and becomes a much-wanted man. Leading the hunt on one side is Russian 'diplomat' Moryak, on the other, L.C. Corkran of British Security, very ably assisted by Mr Albert Campion and - making his debut - Campion's son Rupert, determined to support his father in proving that knight errantry is not yet out-of-date..."

Shakespearean Allusion In Crime Fiction written by Lisa Hopkins and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-21 with Literary Criticism categories.

This book explores why crime fiction so often alludes to Shakespeare. It ranges widely over a variety of authors including classic golden age crime writers such as the four ‘queens of crime’ (Allingham, Christie, Marsh, Sayers), Nicholas Blake and Edmund Crispin, as well as more recent authors such as Reginald Hill, Kate Atkinson and Val McDermid. It also looks at the fondness for Shakespearean allusion in a number of television crime series, most notably Midsomer Murders, Inspector Morse and Lewis, and considers the special sub-genre of detective stories in which a lost Shakespeare play is found. It shows how Shakespeare facilitates discussions about what constitutes justice, what authorises the detective to track down the villain, who owns the countryside, national and social identities, and the question of how we measure cultural value.

Matthew James Matthew dies of natural causes whilst staying at the upmarket Drover's Arms in the Cotswolds. Max Newgate, the pompous manager of the inn is found dead miles away in a Suffolk river near an archaeological dig. The star geologist of Omega Oils, the brilliant but eccentric Francis Makepeace, could be connected to both, but he has disappeared and seems determined not to be found. L.C. Corkran, whose retirement from Her Majesty's security service 'has been greatly exaggerated' now consults for the multi-national Omega Oils and turns to his old friend Albert Campion (who has always behaved 'like a civilised non-entity' but you wouldn't play poker with him) for help. A carnival of delightful, and not so delightful, characters become involved in the hunt for the missing geologist: the cool-headed, independent Miss Anthea Peregrine; the love-struck schoolboy Robert Oncer Smith; the rather dubious antique-dealer Morris Jay; known thug and small-time villain Ginger Scott, Appleyard, a boorish Suffolk policeman; and the grotesque, repellent and very dangerous Claude Porteous. But why is Makepeace, a brilliant and successful man, on the run? Is it because of a failed Omega Oil exploration project in the new African republic of Serendi, or connected to the archaeological excavation of a 4th Century Roman ship? Could the missing Francis Makepeace and the dead Matthew James Matthew somehow be one and the same person? It takes all Campion's guile and charm to get to the bottom of the mystery and ensure that the new, youthful allies he recruits emerge unscathed.

“Wonderfully plotted . . . A marvelous mixture of witchcraft, sacred relics and ancient oaths. [Allingham was a] rare and precious talent.” —The Washington Post Estranged from his father, young Percival St. John Wykes Gyrth wanders the streets of London, penniless and homeless, until he’s lured to the house of gentleman sleuth Albert Campion. An underground ring of the most powerful and wealthy art collectors in the world have turned their attention to the Gyrth Chalice, a state treasure guarded by the family for centuries. To stop its theft, Campion and Val head back to the family seat in Suffolk, where folklore and ancient superstitions abound—and where, in its supposedly haunted woods, Val’s aunt is found literally scared to death. With Val’s coming-of-age ritual approaching—in which he is initiated into the secret of the Chalice—Campion must sort through new religion followers, landed gentry, suspicious villagers, and a cast of London’s ne’er-do-wells for suspects, all while putting his own life on the line. Praise for Margery Allingham “Margery Allingham stands out like a shining light.” —Agatha Christie “The best of mystery writers.” —The New Yorker “Don’t start reading these books unless you are confident that you can handle addiction.” —The Independent “One of the finest Golden-Age crime novelists.” —The Sunday Telegraph “Spending an evening with Campion is one of life’s pure pleasures.” —The Sunday Times
