Buscou-se neste trabalho analisar a situação atual da economia brasileira, tendo como foco de estudo a indústria de bens de capital. Este é um setor estratégico para a formação de um parque industrial complexo e diversificado, fornecendo máquinas e equipamentos para outros setores, e é também importante veículo na criação, incorporação e difusão tecnológica. No processo de substituição de importações iniciado por volta dos anos 30, o Estado brasileiro teve importante participação. Mas, no contexto dos anos 90, é o momento de grandes alterações na economia brasileira, período em que houve a modificação da participação do Estado como fomentador e organizador do processo de industrialização nacional. Neste trabalho investigou-se também o sistema financeiro e sua importância para o desenvolvimento industrial brasileiro, na transferência intersetorial de investimentos. A indústria paulista de bens de capital é a que se mostra mais capacitada para processar as mudanças que podem colocar a indústria brasileira num patamar superior em seu processo de desenvolvimento produtivo, devido às exigências de um mercado interno e externo mais competitivo. Verificou-se ainda o processo de reestruturação produtiva industrial no estado de São Paulo, que resultou em uma nova organização espaço-industrial e qual a inserção da indústria de bens de capital nesta nova organização. Concluí-se com este estudo que a estrutura produtiva nacional.

Este livro é resultado de uma pesquisa realizada em um curso de doutorado em Economia entre os anos de 2015 e 2019 na Universidade Federal Fluminense. Neste período, o Brasil passou por intensas rupturas políticas que marcaram sua história. Neste mesmo contexto, o cenário econômico apresentava gargalos cada vez mais profundos e difíceis de serem superados. Várias agendas de pesquisas buscavam identificar e/ou apontar estes gargalos e consequentemente as possíveis soluções. A estrutura produtiva brasileira já era objeto de análise de inúmeros trabalhos e, cada uma ao seu modo e método, já apresentavam as limitações tanto produtivas quanto no tamanho, competitividade e etc. Neste bojo de pesquisa, o IPEA - Instituto de Pesquisa em Economia Aplicada - iniciou uma agenda de estudos voltada à investigação do desempenho da produtividade no Brasil. Tendo estes estudos como pano de fundo e também como um direcionador da pesquisa, este livro é o resultado do aprofundamento da pesquisa voltado à produtividade na indústria de transformação no Brasil entre 1996 e 2016.
