Haji Misbach dikenal sebagai haji merah atau haji komunis. Dia dike-nal karena pernyataannya yang kontroversial, mulai dari menyebut Islam dan komunisme itu bersesuaian hingga menyatakan bahwa orang Islam seharusnya komunis. Selain itu, ucapan dan tulisannya di media massa sangat keras dan agitatif: dapat dibilang mengkritik dan menyerang lawan politik dengan vulgar. Dia menyebut orang yang tidak sependapat dengannya “munafik”, “setan”, “Islam lamisan”, dan sebagainya. Pernyataan keras itu tercantum di media yang dia pimpin, yaitu Medan Moeslimin (1915) dan Islam Bergerak (1917). Keduanya terbit di Solo. Lewat tulisan, Haji Misbach menyerang kolonialis Hindia Belanda, Keraton Kasunanan Surakarta Hadiningrat yang dianggap feodal, menyentil Muhammadiyah dan tokohnya K.H. Ahmad Dahlan, menyerang tokoh Sarekat Islam (SI) H.O.S. Tjokroaminoto, dan sebagainya. Dengan demikian, dapat dikatakan Misbach sering berkonflik.
