African slaves were brought into Brazil as early as 1530, with abolition in 1888. During those three centuries, Brazil received 4,000,000 Africans, over four times as many as any other American destination. Comparatively speaking, Brazil received 40% of the total number of Africans brought to the Americas, while the US received approximately 10%. Due to this huge influx of Africans, today Brazil’s African-descended population is larger than the population of most African countries. Therefore, it is no surprise that Slavery Studies are one of the most consolidated fields in Brazilian historiography. In the last decades, a number of discussions have flourished on issues such as slave agency, slavery and law, slavery and capitalism, slave families, demography of slavery, transatlantic slave trade, abolition etc. In addition to these more consolidated fields, current research has focused on illegal enslavement, global perspectives on slavery and the slave trade, slavery and gender, the engagement of different social groups in the abolitionist movement or Atlantic connections. Taking into consideration these new trends of Brazilian slavery studies, this volume of collected articles gives leading scholars the chance to present their research to a broader academic community. Thus, the interested reader get to know in more detail these current trends in Brazilian historiography on slavery.

Por meio da análise dos assentos de batismo de escravos adultos pertencentes ao acervo documental da Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Pilar de Ouro Preto, objetivou-se reconstruir parte das redes sociais geradas pelo parentesco espiritual, proporcionado pelo primeiro sacramento e pela complexa dinâmica colonial. O estudo das fontes primárias, além de trazer novas contribuições para a historiografia setecentista, desvenda de forma quantitativa e qualitativa parte do quadro social colonial entre 1712-1750, em Vila Rica. A leitura das fontes e o cruzamento das informações acenam para a participação dos cativos enquanto agentes sociais. Contempla-se a rede social proporcionada pelas relações de compadrio entre cativos e seus respectivos senhores, que acabaram consolidando fortes laços de sociabilidade no século XVIII nas Minas Gerais. O estabelecimento de laços de compadrio entre escravos adultos, vistos como "agentes políticos, que em meio às rígidas hierarquias sociais e tensões coloniais, estabeleciam estratégias para melhorar suas vidas".

This book traces the emergence and early development of segregationist practices and policies in Spanish and Portuguese America - showing that the practice of resettling diverse indigenous groups in segregated "Indian towns" (or aldeamentos in the case of Brazil) influenced the material reorganization of colonial space, shaped processes of racialization, and contributed to the politicization of reproductive sex. The book advances this argument through close readings of published and archival sources from the 16th and early-17th centuries, and is informed by two main conceptual concerns. First, it considers how segregation was envisioned, codified, and enforced in a historical context of consolidating racial differences and changing demographics associated with the racial mixture. Second, it theorizes the interrelations between notions of race and reproductive sexuality. It shows that segregationist efforts were justified by paternalistic discourses that aimed to conserve and foster indigenous population growth, and it contends that this illustrates how racially-qualified life was politicized in early modernity. It further demonstrates that women’s reproductive bodies were instrumentalized as a means to foster racially-qualified life, and it argues that processes of racialization are critically tied to the differential ways in which women’s reproductive capacities have been historically regulated. Race, Sex, and Segregation in Colonial Latin America is essential for students, researchers and scholars alike interested in Latin American history, social history and gender studies.

Em Évora, Grácia, jovem escrava negra, morreu depois de espancada pelo seu proprietário. João de Sá, escravo nas cavalariças reais, chegou a cavaleiro da Ordem Militar de Santiago, na corte de D. João III. Este livro é a história de Lourenço, João, Florinda, Grácia, João de Sá e de muitos outros milhares de escravos que viveram em Portugal. Só nos séculos XV a XVIII, o período de maior concentração de mão-de-obra não-livre, calcula-se que, ao todo, tenha havido, no continente e ilhas, um milhão de pessoas sujeitas a cativeiro. Esta não é uma história da escravatura em Portugal, mas uma história dos escravos. Os protagonistas involuntários de um regime social injusto, excluídos entre os excluídos, são também, enquanto pessoas, os protagonistas deste livro. Como era feita a compra e venda de escravos, qual era a relação entre o senhor e o escravo, como era utilizada a mão-de-obra cativa, qual a diferença entre escravos da cidade, do campo ou do paço? E depois da abolição legal como se transformou a vida destas pessoas? Ainda no início do século XIX, mais propriamente em 1801 e 1809, os jornais de Lisboa publicavam, por incrível que possa parecer, anúncios como estes: "No dia 6 de Agosto, fugiu uma escrava preta muito baixa, olhos medianos, nariz chato e largo, boca grande e beiçuda, mal feita de corpo e mãos grandes e mal feitas. Levava capa de baetão muito comprida, cor de flor de pessegueiro e saia de chita escura. "Na loja da Gazeta de Lisboa se dirá quem é seu senhor, o qual dá de alvíssaras 19$200 réis a quem lha descobrir". "Quem quiser comprar três escravas, duas pardas e uma preta, fale na loja de Paulo Conrado, na rua dos Capelistas."Escravos em Portugal, do historiador Arlindo Manuel Caldeira, é uma obra inovadora sobre um tema que continua ainda muito ignorado no nosso país e que temos obrigação de conhecer de modo mais aprofundado para que não corramos o risco de, em pleno século XXI, ver regressar atitudes esclavagistas, como prenunciam alguns sinais perturbadores.
