Esta obra presenta un enfoque multidisciplinario sobre la violencia en la Edad Media, partiendo de un trabajo preliminar: una tesis de doctorado titulada Violencia y dominación en la Baja Edad Media castellana. En esta oportunidad se despliega sólo el andamiaje teórico que dio sustento a la tesis. Se destaca la existencia de una violencia ambivalente, que construye y destruye a la vez al Estado y a la sociedad, y se sostiene que cada momento histórico tiene sus propias racionalidades en relación a la violencia. En el período analizado, la violencia parece surgir cuando se produce la ruptura del código de valores fundador de esa sociedad que se siente así amenazada. Por otra parte, la sociedad medieval valora el orden, y considera que el orden terrenal debe ser un reflejo, aunque sea pálido y desdibujado, del orden celestial. De la misma manera en que la violencia puede destruir ese orden deseado, otro acto violento puede restaurarlo. En el presente trabajo se analiza principalmente, a partir de diferentes autores y orientaciones, la relación existente entre la violencia y la construcción de la sociedad, particularmente en la Baja Edad Media. Privilegiando el enfoque histórico, se recurre también al aporte de autores provenientes de otras disciplinas, tales como la antropología, la sociología, la filosofía, el derecho, la política, etc.
