Este libro es un referente y un documento fundamental para comprender lo que significa hoy ser una mujer trans en el Perú. Se trata de un trabajo fino de acercamiento, exploración y análisis de las historias de vida de siete mujeres trans en Lima, Ayacucho e Iquitos. Lo más enriquecedor es que su autora, la antropóloga Ximena Salazar, no concentra la mayor parte de su trabajo en su propia mediación analítica y el despliegue teórico pertinente, sino que son las voces de sus protagonistas las que, con sus testimonios, dan vida a esta obra. Cabe destacar que las mujeres trans que participan en este libro contando sus historias de vida y recorridos identitarios son mujeres empobrecidas y varias de ellas migrantes, por lo cual su condición de clase y étnica le suma complejidad a su transgeneridad. El libro se divide en dos partes: la primera es un segmento teórico muy completo donde se definen los conceptos de sexo, género, sexualidad, identidad y transexualidad. Mientras que la segunda, integra el análisis interseccional de las siete mencionadas historias de vida. Estas historias se abordan desde la perspectiva de los recorridos identitarios que atraviesan estas mujeres desde su mundo interior y también desde el exterior —familia, escuela, parejas, redes de socialización—; así como el trabajo sexual y la migración como partes fundamentales de esos recorridos. Este texto proviene de una investigación realizada por Ximena Salazar, Jana Villayzan y Alfonso Silva Santisteban en el Centro de Investigaciones Interdisciplinarias en Salud, Sida y Sociedad de la Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH) con el financiamiento de amfAR - The Foundation for AIDS Research. Ximena Salazar presentó parte de este trabajo para optar por su grado de doctora en Antropología en la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú.

This book explores the political-aesthetic practices of transgender women in Lima, Peru, and how they use these to survive and fight for recognition and full citizenship, through drawing on ethnographic research and on decolonial feminist and aesthetic theories. Chapters analyze how the vulnerability and precariousness of trans women coexist with modes of feminist agency, resistance and resilience, as well as with proposals for political action to transform a heteropatriarchal society toward a more diverse and accepting one. Finally, the author draws on the Viennese artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser’s metaphor of the five skins, whereby the first skin is the epidermis; the second is the clothes; the third is the house; the fourth is identity, which refers to primary socialization spaces such as the neighbourhood; and the fifth is the world environment. The author uses this metaphor to analyze the corporal practices of trans women in a cumulative way, paying special attention to the different stages of their lives, to those skins that embody and accompany them from childhood to adulthood. This book will be of interest to scholars of transgender studies, decolonial feminist studies, and aesthetic, particularly those with a focus on gender and sexuality in Latin America.

El feminismo afronta hoy uno de sus mayores debates: la cuestión trans. En ella los términos “sexo”, “género” y “mujer” son el centro de una agria disputa. Desde la tradición feminista comprometida con la justicia sexual y la igualdad efectiva entre mujeres y varones, Alicia Miyares disecciona la distinción “sexo/género”; el sexo es un dato biológico innegable y el género el conjunto de disposiciones, estereotipos e ideologías que condicionan la desigualdad social sufrida por las mujeres. La doctrina queer/trans impugna tal binomio: niega el sexo como categoría biológica, condenándolo a la irrelevancia política y jurídica, mientras afirma el género como una identidad autopercibida y subjetivamente autodeterminada. Ello conduce al peligro de ocultar la opresión femenina como una realidad social, en favor de “políticas subjetivas” de identidad de género. Esta tendencia se refleja en el ámbito legal, comprometiendo el sentido de leyes contra la discriminación por sexo u orientación sexual. Al exponer las conexiones con el transhumanismo, ideología prometeica que augura la intervención total en la condición humana, y sus derivaciones en nuevas formas de misoginia, Miyares propone una renovada argumentación por un feminismo que no diluya el significado tradicional del binomio sexo/género y, por tanto, que no naufrague en un caos de identidades y trampas conceptuales que lo abocan a su fragmentación, enmascaramiento y despolitización. Alicia Miyares es filósofa y escritora feminista. Profesora en la UNED, su último libro publicado es Distopías patriarcales. Análisis feminista del “generismo queer” (2021).
