Buku ini mengkaji Naskah Asaling Sembahyang yang merupakan salah satu naskah berbahasa Jawa, dan beraksara pegon yang belum pernah dikaji secara filologis. Naskah ini ditemukan di Kudus, tepatnya di desa Jumutan, Demangan, tidak jauh dari lingkungan masjid menara Kudus. Naskah ini berisi banyak teks, diantaranya tentang tasawuf Islam, dhikir, salat, makna shahadat, dan tentang tradisi kejawen. Dari sekian banyak tema tersebut, Anton Zaelani mengkaji teks-teks yang mengandung ajaran Islam, dan meninggalkan teks-teks yang berbau kejawen seperti teks tentang mantra, prediksi (primbon), ritual selamatan dalam pengurusan rumah atau sawah, dan sejenisnya. Dalam naskah ini disebutkan beberapa nama tokoh ulama nusantara, khususnya di Jawa, di antaranya adalah : Pertama, Sunan Kalijaga, seorang wali di Jawa yang kharismatik pada abad XV-XVI. Dakwahnya terkenal dengan dakwah kultural. Ia banyak menulis nasihat-nasihat keagamaan yang dituangkan dalam kebudayaan Jawa. Kedua, Shaikh ‘Abdul Muhyi Pamijahan (1650-1730 M), seorang penyebar tarikat Shattariyyah di Jawa pada pertengahan abad XVIII. Ketiga, seorang pujangga terakhir keraton Surakarta abad XIX, R. Ronggowarsito (1802-1873 M) yang dalam karya-karyanya banyak menulis tentang ajaran Manunggaling Kawula Gusti.

Selama ini orang menganggap bahwa Marxisme-Leninisme atau lebih mudahnya komunisme, berada dalam hubungan diametral dengan Islam. Banyak faktor pendorong kepada tumbuhnya anggapan seperti itu. Secara politis, umpamanya dalam sejarah yang belum sampai satu abad. Marxisme-Leninisme telah terlibat dalam pertentangan tak kunjung selesai dengan negara- negara (dalam artian pemerintahan negara-bangsa atau nation- state), bangsa-bangsa, dan kelompok-kelompok muslim di seluruh dunia. Dalam Peristiwa Madiun, 1948, umpamanya, kaum muslimin Indonesia berdiri berhadapan dengan Partai Komunis Indonesia (PKI) karena dua alasan. Pertama, karena PKI di bawah pimpinan Muso berusaha menggulingkan pemerintahan Republik Indonesia yang didirikan oleh bangsa yang mayoritas penduduknya beragama Islam. Kedua, karena banyak pemuka agama Islam dan ulama yang terbunuh, seperti kalangan pengasuh Pesantren Takeran yang hanya terletak beberapa kilometer di luar kota Madiun sendiri. Kiai Mursyid dan sesama kiai pesantren tersebut hingga saat ini belum diketahui di mana dikuburkan.
