O livro Mulheres e suas histórias de vida com a dor crônica tem como objetivo principal tornar-se uma fonte segura de consulta para as pessoas que convivem com dor ou conhecem alguém que sofre. Foi elaborado a partir de uma ideia simples, na qual pessoas, essencialmente mulheres, poderão reconhecer-se e identificar-se nas narrativas de outras mulheres. A dor crônica exerce impactos negativos em diferentes aspectos da vida. Existe um deficit significativo que interfere na funcionalidade, nos relacionamentos interpessoais e familiares, resultando em interferência na qualidade de vida. Esta obra descreve o complexo processo psicológico que envolve a pessoa com dor, seus comportamentos e sentimentos, como a raiva, o desamparo, o medo, entre tantos outros, e a necessidade de uma reestruturação cognitiva, como facilitadora para o desenvolvimento de estratégias de enfrentamento e de adaptação diante de um quadro muitas vezes avassalador. Parece ser fundamental considerar o prejuízo físico, emocional e cognitivo trazido pela dor, que é sempre um grande desafio! Esta investigação construiu-se a partir do desejo da autora de entender a dor e seus efeitos em 33 mulheres, e saber como essa dor e o sofrimento influenciaram suas histórias de vida, contadas de forma clara e objetiva em resposta à pergunta "Como é viver com dor crônica?". Para responder a isso, as pessoas precisam reconhecer e entender seu adoecimento. A dor não é invenção de suas mentes fragilizadas, como muitas pessoas do seu convívio e mesmo profissionais as fazem acreditar. Não precisam pensar que terão de abraçar a dor como sua "doce e constante companheira", como diz o poeta. Mas terão de aprender a dizer "não" quando o fardo for maior do que conseguem suportar. Dizer "sim" às boas e positivas experiências que a vida pode lhes oferecer a cada momento. É preciso que estejam prontas para cuidarem de si mesmas e se permitam ser cuidadas. Ter dor crônica não as torna pessoas pela metade, como às vezes pensam, mas podem manter a integridade do corpo preservada, o que significa buscar suportes, descobrir os recursos de enfrentamento que precisam e aprendam a lidar com conflitos emocionais e com alguns fortes sentimentos presentes na dor como impotência, desesperança e resignação. A mensagem do livro para as pessoas que sofrem e para aquelas que não compreendem como é viver com dor crônica é que essa dor interfere nas funções psicológicas das pessoas, provocando mudanças nos estados emocionais e gerando rachaduras na integridade dos seus corpos que sofrem e doem. Foram essas mudanças e impactos causados na vida que nortearam este livro.
