In questo studio sull’estetica della mulatez, la narrazione del fascino della sensuale mulatta cubana, pericolosa perché “quasi bianca”, viene esplorata come antifona dalle funzioni contraddittorie: da un lato, l’essere monito contro i tentativi di contaminazione razziale dell’ordine dominante della blancura e della mascolinità; dall’altro, l’essere metafora della possibilità di rottura di questo stesso ordine a favore di un ethos liberale, rivendicazione di nuove forme di cittadinanza in seno alla società di caste coloniale. Concentrandosi sulle prospettive di donne che si autodefiniscono mulatte, l’autrice ne esplora l’“habitus dell’esibizionismo” e la vanità ostentata quale tattica per garantirsi visibilità nel sistema di forze cubano: un fare più che un essere; uno stile performativo critico verso la tradizione rappresentativa che fissa la mulier ludens, la mulatta, come disponibile e passiva.

Modern poetry, at least according to the current consensus, is difficult and often depressing. But as Humor in Modern American Poetry shows, modern poetry is full of humorous moments, from comic verse published in popular magazines to the absurd juxtapositions of The Cantos. The essays in this collection show that humor is as essential to the serious work of William Carlos Williams as it is to the light verse of Phyllis McGinley. For the writers in this volume, the point of humor is not to provide "comic relief,†? a brief counterpoint to the poem's more serious themes; humor is central to the poems' projects. These poets use humor to claim their own poetic authority; to re-define literary tradition; to show what audience they are writing for; to make political attacks; and, perhaps most surprisingly, to promote sympathy among their readers. The essays in this book include single-author studies, discussions of literary circles, and theories of form. Taken together, they help to begin a new conversation about modernist poetry, one that treats its lighthearted moments not as decorative but as substantive. Humor defines groups and marks social boundaries, but it also leads us to transgress those boundaries; it forges ties between the writer and the reader, blurs the line between public and private, and becomes a spur to self-awareness.

Los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres 2012 recibieron el sobrenombre de “los juegos de las mujeres”: compitieron 4.676 (el 46% de los atletas), en todos los deportes y todas las delegaciones tuvieron una representante femenina. Pero esta paridad de participación entre hombres y mujeres, ¿se reflejó en la cobertura informativa que la prensa hizo de dicho evento? ¿Cuáles fueron los valores y estereotipos que se asociaron al deporte femenino en el discurso difundido por los periódicos? Para dar respuesta a estos interrogantes, las autoras de este libro llevan a cabo el análisis cuantitativo y cualitativo de las informaciones sobre este acontecimiento publicadas en periódicos referentes de la prensa vasca, nacional y deportiva.
