Inclusive and sustainable economic growth in the six Western Balkan (WB6) economies depends on greater economic competitiveness. Although the gap is closing gradually, the standards of living in WB6 are well below those of the OECD and EU. Accelerating the rate of socio-economic convergence will require a holistic and growth oriented approach to policy making. This is the fourth study of the region (formerly under the title 'Competitiveness in South East Europe') and it comprehensively assesses policy reforms in the WB6 economies across 15 policy areas key to strengthening their competitiveness. It enables WB6 economies to compare economic performance against regional peers, as well as EU-OECD good practices and standards, and to design future policies based on rich evidence and actionable policy recommendations. The regional profile presents assessment findings across five policy clusters crucial to accelerating socio-economic convergence of the WB6 by fostering regional co-operation: business environment, skills, infrastructure and connectivity, digital transformation and greening. Economy-specific profiles complement the regional assessment, offering each WB6 economy an in-depth analysis of their policies supporting competitiveness. They also track the implementation of the previous 2021 study's recommendations and provide additional ones tailored to the economies’ evolving challenges. These recommendations aim to inform structural economic reforms and facilitate the region’s socio-economic convergence towards the standards of the EU and OECD.

The Western Balkans region has come a long way over the last two decades in achieving economic and social progress. With a population of 17.6 million, the region today boasts a combined gross domestic product (GDP) of close to EUR 100 billion, an average GDP per capita of about EUR 5 400 and a comprehensive process of integration with the European Union. This report provides multi-dimensional assessments across the economic, social, finance, governance and environmental pillars of sustainable development for five economies of the region. The region's location, its deep relationships with Europe and its academic tradition present many opportunities for future development, especially at a time when distances are shrinking further with digitalisation. Making the most of this potential will require collaboration in tackling challenges, which have been further exposed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Boosting competences and education, strengthening social cohesion and ensuring a green transformation towards clean energy and the valuation of the region's natural wealth, emerge as strategic priorities. Beyond practical and financial constraints, future solutions must address considerable institutional and governance challenges that remain across the region.

The Economics Of Regional Integration written by Sándor Gyula Nagy and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-03-12 with Business & Economics categories.
This book develops a new methodological framework for measuring the efficiency of regional integration and the integration profile of member states. It includes rich case studies, which offer a comparative analysis of ten integrations spanning four continents - The Americas, the European Union, Africa and Asia. The Economics of Regional Integration shows the importance of regional (economic) integration in the world economy, based partially on descriptive analyses, the authors’ new methodological framework, and a new composite index integration profile. It implements and quantifies relevant theories (e.g. integration maturity, competitiveness, economic development, convergence) to one framework and a composite indicator. This helps to arrive at a more precise measurement of these integrations, resulting in useful feedback for decision-makers and leading to policy recommendations for each organisation to improve efficiency or to include new members. The text presents a comparative perspective of regional integration based on case studies, by applying the same theoretical framework and a comprehensive methodology for assessing the economic readiness of membership-seeking countries while also considering regional differences. It investigates the impact of regional integration on income inequality and poverty reduction by examining how common development, economic policies and social programs implemented by regional organizations affect the distribution of income and wealth among member states. The comprehensive investigation of regional integration, covering economic, social and institutional factors, makes the book highly relevant for advanced students, researchers and scholars. Additionally, its potential policy context application makes it useful for policymakers and practitioners participating in regional integration programs.

The Future Of Investor State Dispute Settlement written by Ben Beaumont and has been published by Kluwer Law International B.V. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-02-13 with Law categories.
What makes investor-State dispute settlement (ISDS) as dynamic a field as it is – especially in comparison with international commercial arbitration – is its uncanny ability to engage directly with the most topical and pressing issues of the day, including human rights, regulation of the energy sector, and climate change and the environment more generally. This book provides a deep dive into the reality behind the causes and effects of the expressed concerns regarding ISDS and the extent to which they can and have been addressed by ongoing reform processes at national, regional, and international levels. Deeply informed insights from leading scholars and practitioners on the status quo and perspectives of ISDS shed clear light on such aspects as the following: reform instruments adopted at the UNCITRAL Working Group III; issues surrounding the legitimacy of ISDS; dispute prevention and amicable settlement mechanisms; the proposed multilateral investment court; implications of climate change and energy transition for investment policies and disputes; recent regional trends in policymaking and perspectives; the ICSID-UNCITRAL Code of Conduct; investment protection standards and dispute resolution mechanisms in recent international investment treaties; viability of the modernized Energy Charter Treaty; use of artificial intelligence; and participation of civil society organizations. As an in-depth analysis of the most recent developments in international investment law and dispute resolution, this book offers a realistic view of the reform processes, thus underlining the necessary legal and institutional measures that will translate into real-life effects in the future. With its help, policymakers and government officials will identify ongoing trends and anticipate risks that require intervention, while practitioners and the broader dispute resolution community will find valuable information about the evolving contours of investment protection treaties and ISDS. For academics and civil society organizations interested in the developments and implications of ISDS, the book provides factual, nuanced, and effective analysis of the relevant issues.
