This book analyzes immigration policies in East Asia in the context of contemporary global migration flows and mobility. Many studies of China's relations with and influence on Southeast Asia tend to focus on how Beijing has used its power asymmetry to achieve regional influence. Yet, scholars and pundits often fail to appreciate the complexity of the contemporary Chinese state and society, and just how fragmented, decentralized, and internationalized China is today. In The Ripple Effect, Enze Han argues that a focus on the Chinese state alone is not sufficient for a comprehensive understanding of China's influence in Southeast Asia. Instead, we must look beyond the Chinese state, to non-state actors from China, such as private businesses and Chinese migrants. These actors affect people's perception of China in a variety of ways, and they often have wide-ranging as well as long-lasting effects on bilateral relations. Looking beyond the Chinese state's intentional influence reveals many situations that result in unanticipated changes in Southeast Asia. Han proposes that to understand this increasingly globalized China, we need more conceptual flexibility regarding which Chinese actors are important to China's relations, and how they wield this influence, whether intentional or not. The Ripple Effect makes the case that to understand China's relationship with Southeast Asia, it is necessary to move beyond a narrow fixation on the Chinese state by scrutinizing the ordinary manifestations of China's presence in the region and recognizing the multifaceted web of actors and their effects on the dynamics between the two regions.

Fifty years after the inception of a multicultural governance model that seemingly works and is relatively popular, Canada remains one of the few countries in the world to believe in multiculturalism. Yet the irony is inescapable: Notwithstanding its lofty status as a Canadian icon and an aspirational ideal, an official multiculturalism remains misunderstood both in Canada and abroad in terms of what it means, how it works and for whom, and why it endures. If anything, as the book explains, the idea of multiculturalism remains shrouded in the conceptual fog of a ‘riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma’. An interplay of polite fictions that mask inconvenient truths puts the onus on deconstructing Canadian multiculturalism by conceptualizing strengths (including a probe into why multiculturalism ostensibly works in Canada but rarely elsewhere), analyzing weaknesses, critically assessing its worth, and envisioning its future in responding to the new realities and demands of a post-multicultural world. This book studies the role that grassroots volunteers play in the integration and naturalization process in Singapore. With increasing migration, the topics of migrant integration and belonging are of perennial academic and public interest. However, much of the existing literature on the subject is largely focused on European and North American cases. By focusing on the single case of Singapore, this project provides a story of how a city-state grapples with the issue of managing increasing cultural diversity while seeking to maintain a cohesive identity. As a city, Singapore has many ubiquitous features of other urban centres for migration, such as a rapidly diversifying population and an economy that is heavily reliant on foreign labour. At the same time, being a city-state means that the demographic and cultural changes experienced in Singapore also coincide with questions of national belonging and membership in the nation-state, in contrast to larger countries with rural-urban divides or more decentralized systems of migration management and integration. Examining this simultaneously typical yet unique case study means that this project is able to examine the processes where state and society have managed migration and cultural diversity at the level of the nation-state. For example, this project discusses how Singapore’s policy of multiracialism complements nation-building efforts, adding to existing public and academic debate about whether societies can concurrently embrace cultural difference yet maintain a cohesive national identity.
