"In an age of transnational economic and political integration, it is surprisingly rare to find social scientists reflecting on the lessons of cross national comparison. At first glance, there may be little to suggest why a comparison between Belgium and Britain should be instructive. The former is a small country geographically located at the heart of Europe and housing the putative capital. The latter has a large population by European standards but is struggling to reconcile a proud, but insular, history - and 'special relationship' to the United States - with the economic imperative of union with the Continent. Yet on closer inspection there are intriguing similarities. Both countries have learnt some lessons from colonial adventures, both contain 'nations within nations' and both have incorporated significant populations of migrants from outside Europe since 1945. Both, in other words, have had to confront the challenge of 'multiculturalism.' One has had to build an approach from a starting point where a deep rift exists between two constituent 'nations', the other from an equally profound colonial experience which produced a legacy of racial and ethnic categorisation. This book examines the relationship between two policy approaches for managing the cultural diversity of contemporary societies: interculturalism and multiculturalism. The relationship between these two approaches has been a matter of intense debate in recent years. Some commentators argue that they represent two very di fferent approaches, while others argue that interculturalism merely re-emphasises some of the core elements of present day multiculturalism. The debate arises, in part, because multiculturalism can take a variety of di fferent forms, which makes it di fficult to identify its key features in order to compare it with interculturalism. The debate has gained added momentum from the backlash against multiculturalism in recent years, and from the Council of Europe’s prominent championing of interculturalism as an alternative approach. This book aims to clarify the concepts of interculturalism and multiculturalism, and to bring the various arguments together in a way that will assist politicians, policy makers, practitioners and interested lay people to understand the concerns that are driving the di fferent orientations. The book is also intended to facilitate a comparison of the policy implications of interculturalism and multiculturalism. To this end, each chapter concludes with a concise statement of the implications for policy that follow from the viewpoint that has been expressed.

However, before judging a culture it is important to understand the historical background and the underlying principles which make the United States so different from Western European countries like Germany. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to inform about selected issues out of the wide field of social structure by combining research facts with historical aspects and cultural background. The first comparison points addressed in this essay is the role of multiculturalism for both countries, which is more similar than usually expected. The second part compares social welfare of both countries, which deals as an example with the system of health insurance. The last section examines collectivist and individualist features of the United States and Germany.

Since independence in 1965, Singapore has developed its own unique approach to managing the diversity of Race, Religion, Culture, Language, Nationality, and Age among its citizens. This approach is a consequence of many factors, including its very distinct ethnic makeup compared with its neighbours, its ambitions as a globally oriented city-state, and its small physical size. Each of these factors and many others have presented Singapore society with a range of challenges and opportunities, and will in all likelihood continue to do so for the foreseeable future. In the writing of this book, the author team set themselves the task of projecting the impact of current domestic and international social trends into the future, to anticipate what Singapore society might look like by around 2040. In doing so, they analyse the particular path that Singapore has taken since independence, in comparison with other multicultural societies and with regard to the balance between the necessity of forging a new national identity after British rule and departure from Malaysia, and the need to ensure that Singapore’s ethnic minority populations remain socially enfranchised.
