Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Law - Miscellaneous, grade: 1C, University of Stirling (School of Arts and Humanities - Division of Law and Philosophy), course: LLM International Energy Law and Policy, language: English, abstract: Decades of irresponsible oil exploitation in the Niger Delta have caused a water and air pollution which does not have many comparisons anywhere else. In an already fragile country as Nigeria, characterised by weak democratic institutions and poor economic governance, this situation has led to increasing discontent and violence towards both the government and the oil multinationals. These two actors co-operate for the maximisation of oil profits and revenues while, at the same time, excluding local host communities from the participation in the oil development projects, preventing them to achieve a sustainable development, violating their Human Rights, and compromising their livelihoods. This paper analyses the legal framework of Nigeria in the oil sector and the peculiarities of the country in order to provide a critical overview of the issues, demonstrating that the amendment of the domestic Acts dealing with the topic, as well as the remediation to the damages caused by the oil multinationals, are no longer deferrable. The final aim is to suggest a pattern to sustainable oil development which, by means of applying the concepts of Corporate Social Responsibility, would help to quell the conflict, to improve the standards of life of local people, and to make Nigeria emerge as a socio-environmentally responsible African resource-rich country.

Nigeria, Africa's most populated country is rich in ethnic diversity - a reason why it suffers from many conflicts. The country is one of the top five oil producers. The recent resource crisis in the Niger Delta is caused by poor division of resources, underdevelopment, and mismanagement. The failure of the young democracy would have a vehement effect in the country and in Africa as a whole. The government has to consolidate its democracy, uphold unity and sovereignty. To secure democracy it will need support from the Nigerians themselves, the multinational oil companies and the international world.

The main theme of this book is to provide a critical analysis of the "Nigerian dependent management and leadership development in the post world war II colonial Nigeria". (1945-to-1960) and beyond, using foreign fi rms-global/multinational and transnational corporations; U.A.C., SHELL, NNPC and OPEC. Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 1,3, University of Cologne (Wirtschaftsgeografie), language: English, abstract: Multinational corporations (MNCs) play a significant role in our economic world. Accounting for approximately one third of total world trade and including around 80 million people outside their home bases in complex supply and dependency networks, they seize seemingly endless economic power what has given way to strong opposition and causes fear amongst ordinary people who feel at the mercy of their power. In my paper I will try to clarify the relationship between MNCs and nation states and therefore answer the question what kind of forces drive MNCs, which objectives they have and which measures they take to reach their individual aims. The paper will start with the definition of MNCs (chapter 2) and their emergence. I will then refer theories of MNC evolution that are closely linked to Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and patterns of labour division (chapter 3 and 4). The following chapter shall explore the power relationship between nation states and MNCs in general (chapter 5). The example of oil extraction through Royal Dutch Shell in the Nigeria's delta region will further illustrate the interdependencies especially many resource rich but underdeveloped or developing countries face and identify the sources of friction between government, state, peoples, NGOs and MNCs. The findings will be summarized and an outlook on possible future developments will be given in the last chapter (or Chapter 6).
