The wireless communication channel is charactarized by multipath propagation mechanism due to scattering by objects surrounding the communicating nodes. Unmitigated multipath propagation can be harmful due to the introduced distortion by superimposing multiple signal replicas. On the other hand, the multipath propagation can be beneficial in providing implicit diversity, as the propagation paths can be used as multiple communication channels. This dissertation thesis presents a simple method for spatial modeling of narrowband multipath channels. It presents results that have stemmed from a new approach in channel characterization - deriving the second-order fading statistics like level-crossing rate, average fade duration, and coherence distance and time from the multipath angular power distribution (APD) at the receiver antenna. First, a new method is presented for characterizing the three-dimensional angular spread of the received multipath in terms of the zeroth- and first-degree spherical harmonic coefficients of the APD, and the dependence of the average spatial correlation of the received signal envelope on that angular spread is derived. Second, the derivation of the average second-order fading channel statistics in terms of the angular spread is extended for characterizing the angular variability of the second-order fading statistics in a local area and local volume. This characterization is obtained in terms of the so-called three-dimensional multipath shape factors - an extension of an earlier work on horizontal propagation. The multipath shape factors in this work are defined in terms of the zeroth-, first- and second-degree spherical harmonic coefficients of the APD. Third, the shape factor theory has been extended for modeling mobile-to-mobile multipath channels through the joint APD at both wireless link ends. For this purpose, joint multipath shape factors have been defined in terms of the double Fourier coefficients of the joint biazimuthal APD for the two-dimensional model, or the double spherical harmonic coefficients of the joint bispherical APD for the three-dimensional model.

The statistics of the amplitude, time and angle of arrival of multipaths in an indoor environment are all necessary components of multipath models used to simulate the performance of spatial diversity in receive antenna configurations. The model presented by Saleh and Valenzuela, was added to by Spencer et. al., and included all three of these parameters for a 7 GHz channel. A system was built to measure these multipath parameters at 2.4 GHz for multiple locations in an indoor environment. Another system was built to measure the angle of transmission for a 6 GHz channel. The addition of this parameter allows spatial diversity at the transmitter along with the receiver to be simulated. The process of going from raw measurement data to discrete arrivals and then to clustered arrivals is analyzed. Many possible errors associated with discrete arrival processing are discussed along with possible solutions. Four clustering methods are compared and their relative strengths and weaknesses are pointed out. The effects that errors in the clustering process have on parameter estimation and model performance are also simulated.

The main goal of this thesis is to provide an in-depth study of two important techniques that are effective in improving the performance, data rate, or bandwidth-efficiency in wireless communication systems. The two techniques are, first, diversity combining equipped with quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), and second, the estimation of fading channel statistical properties. To effectively combat the adverse effect of fading and to improve the error rate performance in wireless communications, one of the major approaches is to employ diversity combining techniques. In the first part of this thesis, we focus on the equal gain combining (EGC) and hybrid-selection equal gain combining (HS/EGC) for bandwidth-efficient wireless systems (i.e. QAM systems). For EGC QAM systems, we propose the receiver structure and the corresponding decision variables, and then study the effects of imperfect channel estimation (ICE) and quantify the loss of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain caused by ICE. For HS/EGC QAM system, we develop a general approach to derive unified error rate and outage probability formulas over various types of fading channels based on the proposed HS/EGC receiver. The main contribution of this work lies in that it provides effective hybrid diversity schemes and new analytical approaches to enable thorough analysis and effective design of bandwidth efficient wireless communication systems which suffer from ICE and operate in realistic multipath channels. Channel statistic information is proven to be critical in determining the systems design, achievable data rate, and achievable performance. In the second part of this thesis, we study the estimation of the fading channel statistics. We propose several iterative algorithms to estimate the first- and second-order statistics of general fading or composite fading-shadowing channels and derive the Cramer-Rao bounds (CRBs) for all the cases. We demonstrate that these iterative methods are efficient in the sense that they achieve their corresponding CRBs. The main contribution of this work is that it bridges the gap between the broad utilization of fading channel statistical properties and the lack of systematic study that makes such statistical properties available.
