The author considers a general multiple access communication system with several transmitters communicating with one receiver over a common channel. The message output from any transmitter is independent from the message outputs from any other transmitters. Shannon's coding theorem shows that, for a conventional communication system with one transmitter and one receiver, there exists a capacity C for a given channel, and that communications can be achieved with an arbitrarily small probability of error for any rate R smaller than C. The converse to the coding theorem shows that for any rate R greater than C, it is impossible to make the probability of error arbitrarily small. In the report, the author determines a set of rates, the capacity region, which allow each transmitter to communicate with the receiver with an arbitrarily small probability of error. It is shown that for any set of rates outside the capacity region, the probability of error cannot be made arbitrarily small. In other words, the author extends Shannon's coding theorem and its converse to a coding theorem and a converse for multiple access channels. (Author).

Computer communication networks have come of age. Today, there is hardly any professional, particularly in engineering, that has not been the user of such a network. This proliferation requires the thorough understanding of the behavior of networks by those who are responsible for their operation as well as by those whose task it is to design such networks. This is probably the reason for the large number of books, monographs, and articles treating relevant issues, problems, and solutions in this field. Among all computer network architectures, those based on broadcast mul tiple access channels stand out in their uniqueness. These networks appear naturally in environments requiring user mobility where the use of any fixed wiring is impossible and a wireless channel is the only available option. Because of their desirable characteristics multiple access networks are now used even in environments where a wired point-to-point network could have been installed. The understanding of the operation of multiple access network through their performance analysis is the focus of this book.

In this work, different approaches for improving the bandwidth efficiency of Multiple Access Channels have been proposed. Such improvements can be achieved with methods that use network coding or with methods that implement successive decoding. Both of these two methods have been discussed here. Under the first method, two novel schemes for using network coding in cooperative networks have been proposed. In the first scheme, network coding generates some redundancy in addition to the redundancy that is generated by the channel code. In the second scheme, the relay by use of the network code, sends a compressed version of the parts missing from the original transmission. The second method, involves a scheme to increase the channel capacity of an existing channel. This increase is made possible by the introduction of a new Raptor coded interfering channel to an existing channel. Through successive decoding at the destination, the data of both main and interfering sources is decoded. Finally, we generalize our work to allow the possibility of decoding either the secondary source data or the main source data first. We will investigate the performance and delay for each decoding scheme.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of multiple access techniques used in the cellular industry. The usage of multiple access techniques in telecommunications enables many users to share the same spectrum in the frequency domain, time domain, code domain or phase domain. Licenses are given, by the FCC, to operate wireless communication systems over given bands of frequencies, with the smaller bands, (channels), reused to provide services to other users. Thus, bandwidth efficiency is vital, as the speed and size of digital data networks continue to expand. This brief also uses numerous illustrations to bring students up-to-date in the practical applications of multiple access techniques, which can then be put to work in the industry. Primarily, electrical engineering students who study telecommunications, as well as engineers and designers working in wireless communications, would find this book useful.

It is our great pleasure to present the proceedings of the Third International Workshop on Multiple Access Communications (MACOM) that was held in Barcelona during September 13–14, 2010. In 1961, Claude Shannon established the foundation for the discipline now known as “multi-user information theory” in his pioneering paper “Two-way Communication Channels,” and later Norman Abramson published his paper “The Aloha System—Another Alternative for Computer Communications” in 1970 which introduced the concept of multiple access using a shared common channel. Thereafter, for more than 40 years of study, numerous elegant theories and algorithms have been developed for multiple-access communications. During the 1980s and 1990s the evolution of multiple-access techniques p- ceeded in conjunction with the evolution of wireless networks. Novel multiple access techniques like code division multiple access (CDMA) and orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) provided increased spectral - ?ciency, dynamicity and ?exibility in radio resource allocation with intrinsic anti-multipath and anti-interference features. In this ?rst decade of the 21st century,multiple-accesstechniques,derivedfromadvancedwirelesstransmission methodologiesbasedonthediversityconcept(e. g. ,MC-CDMA,MIMO-OFDMA and SC-FDMA), opened the road to a renewed idea of multiple access. Today multiple-access communications involve many challenging aspects not only l- ited (like in the past) to physical layer design. Medium access control (MAC) techniques play a crucial role in managing the radio resources that users will exploit to transmit their data streams. Recent developments in software radios and cognitive radios have led to a signi?cant impact also on spectrum m- agement and access paradigms.
