Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is one of the main causes of disability in young adult population. The estimated burden of the disease worldwide is about three million people. The pathogenic mechanism of MS involves both auto immune and degenerative processes. These two mechanisms are thought to determine a combination of events leading to several clinical pattern of disease onset and course. Multiple Sclerosis: Bench to Bedside provides the most up-to-date and concise reviews on the critical issues of multiple sclerosis from around the world. This book is written by leaders and experts in the field of multiple sclerosis research and is divided into easy to read sections. Section I focuses on basic science aspects of Multiple Sclerosis, including potential biomarkers, molecular biology, heat shock proteins, oxidative stress, genetic and epigenetics. Section II focuses on clinical and epidemiological aspects of Multiple Sclerosis, including remyelination therapy, neuroplasticity-based technologies and interventions. This is an important reference book and a must-read for Postgraduate Medical Scholars, Basic Science Researchers and Neurologists in Clinical Practice.

Research and advances in the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a story of growing success. Great progress has been made in identifying the molecular mechanisms that can be utilized to develop highly efficacious treatments for MS patients. Since the middle of the last century, when studies using an inflammatory autoimmune model of MS i.e. experimental autoimmune encephalitis (EAE) were initiated, research on MS has since led to an enormous growth of knowledge. The limitations arising from these animal models have been partially compensated by insights generated from histopathological, immunological, genetic, imaging and clinical studies of MS. The importance of T cells and, recently of B cells, in MS has been elucidated and the significance of CNS resident cells, particularly in the progressive course of MS has been highlighted. The importance of environmental factors and genetic predisposition have also been recognized and the interaction between th e individual and its environment seems to play key roles in the pathogenesis of this disease. However, definite causative agent(s) or single gene(s) involved in MS still remain unidentified. A deeper understanding of the immunological pathways involved goes hand in hand with further improving therapy for MS. Focal inflammation in MS, caused by de novo CNS infiltration, can be prevented effectively using peripherally-acting drugs. However, diffuse CNS intrinsic inflammation and neurodegeneration are not targeted by the current arsenal of therapeutics and patients with progressive disease courses remain difficult to treat. Generating insights into pathophysiological processes and the clinical translation of this knowledge have been a formula of success for treating inflammatory diseases. The future will show whether this will hold true for CNS-trapped inflammation and neurodegeneration and whether the ultimate goal - truly curing MS - will be possible.

Inflammatory processes have been implicated in the pathophysiology of a variety of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, stroke and mUltiple sclerosis. It is now widely accepted that the brain, considered to be an "immunologically privileged" organ, can exhibit immune and autoimmune responses, and it is these responses that may in fact be responsible for many neural pathologies. The participants of the workshop VI Preface Research over the past decade has demonstrated the pivotal role of the microglia in the neuroinflammatory process, and more recent work in the field of chemokines has firmly established their important role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory disease states. Inevitably with the wealth of research being conducted in the field of neuroinflammation comes the hope of identifying novel targets for therapeutic intervention in the inflammatory process which may im pact on neurodegenerative diseases. The meeting "Neuroinflammation - From Bench to Bedside" aimed to cover the whole spectrum of research currently being pursued in this exciting field, literally taking the participants from the bench - study ing the importance of the microglia in the inflammatory process and the involvement, in particular, of the rapidly expanding chemokine family in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases - to the bedside - and the possibilities for novel treatment of disorders as di verse as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, stroke and variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD).

"I truly recommend There’s No Pill for This because it contains the wisdom of a health care professional who also has the experience of being a patient."—Bernie Siegel, MD, author of No Endings, Only Beginnings and Love, Medicine & Miracles From a doctor living with MS: how to radically improve your quality of life with diet, hormones, supplements, exercise, and other lifestyle adjustments Most of us take for granted the little things in life—like walking out to the mailbox, socializing with friends, or enjoying a mug of hot coffee. But what if each daily activity required intensive planning and effort? That’s what living with multiple sclerosis is like, and author Michaël Friedman knows this from first-hand experience. Since his diagnosis of multiple sclerosis a decade ago, Dr. Friedman has been searching for a cure for the disease. After years of research, he realized that he had some of the answers right in his naturopathic medicine toolbox, and others, surprisingly, lay in the realm of conventional medicine. There’s No Pill for This tells his story and offers treatment advice and hope to those who suffer from MS. He does not promise a miracle cure but instead provides the personal prescriptions he follows that are delaying the disease process and radically improving his quality of life, including dietary measures and supplements to support a healthy microbiome and hormone therapies that can reduce neuroinflammation and possibly promote neurorestoration. Dr. Friedman presents a daily protocol for MS patients, including diet, supplement, detoxification, and hormone strategies; mindfulness therapy; physical therapy; and a wide range of beneficial lifestyle adjustments related to exercise, sleep routines, time management, stress management, and more. He also offers special advice for supporting healthy bladder and bowel function and improving oxygen supply. In the book’s conclusion, Dr. Friedman reflects on what this complicated chronic disease has taught him, and continues to teach him, about the value of humility and about what is truly important in life.

Intense immunosuppression followed by Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation for Neurological Diseases (HSCT) has been evaluated as a possible therapeutic tool in severe autoimmune diseases for the last 20 years. In the neurological field, HSCT has been widely investigated for the treatment of multiple sclerosis and evidence is accumulating about its potential use in neuromyelitis optica, stiff person syndrome, myasthenia gravis and many immune neuropathies. This volume summarizes that research. Besides their strong clinical relevance, studies on HSCT in neurological diseases have contributed to mew insights on the pathological mechanisms underlying CNS autoimmunity. Reviews immunological mechanisms of HSCT and CNS autoimmunity Identifies neurological diseases showing treatment efficacy with HSCT Includes MS, myasthenia gravis, neuromyelitis optica, and more Covers early and late side effects of HSCT
