The interactions of financial securities are crucial to determine possible portfolio losses. Although this fact is well understood, two questions remain: What causes changes in the dependence structure of financial assets? How can fluctuating dependencies be measured? The most common approach to identify the amplitude of financial assets' interactions are linear correlation coefficients. However, they fail to comprise shifts in the dependence structure. Alternatively, Copulas are a more flexible dependence measurement. This book focuses on the development of Dynamic Copula frameworks by implementing stochastic parameters into Archimedian and Elliptical Copula functions. In contrast to static correlation measures, the Dynamic Copulas are able to replicate unstable financial market interactions. Various Dynamic Copulas are applied to global stock, bond, commodity and exchange rate data to calculate the correlation time paths, which explain financial market reactions to economic shocks. Furthermore, the interactions of dependencies, volatility and returns are analyzed, to determine the efficiency of portfolio diversification in regards to wealth protection. Portfolio risks are estimated through Dynamic Copulas to demonstrate their abilities to replicate financial market interactions accurately. Additionally, this analysis reveals the impact of changing dependence intensities on the magnitude of possible portfolio losses. Finally, the Dynamic Copulas are utilized to allocate higher moment optimal portfolios. This examination emphasizes the effect of inaccurate correlation estimates on the portfolio choice.

In presidential elections, do voters cast their ballots for the candidates whose platform and positions best match their own? Or is the race for president of the United States come down largely to who runs the most effective campaign? It’s a question those who study elections have been considering for years with no clear resolution. In The Timeline of Presidential Elections, Robert S. Erikson and Christopher Wlezien reveal for the first time how both factors come into play. Erikson and Wlezien have amassed data from close to two thousand national polls covering every presidential election from 1952 to 2008, allowing them to see how outcomes take shape over the course of an election year. Polls from the beginning of the year, they show, have virtually no predictive power. By mid-April, when the candidates have been identified and matched in pollsters’ trial heats, preferences have come into focus—and predicted the winner in eleven of the fifteen elections. But a similar process of forming favorites takes place in the last six months, during which voters’ intentions change only gradually, with particular events—including presidential debates—rarely resulting in dramatic change. Ultimately, Erikson and Wlezien show that it is through campaigns that voters are made aware of—or not made aware of—fundamental factors like candidates’ policy positions that determine which ticket will get their votes. In 1984, the University of Bonn (FRG) and the International Institute for Applied System Analysis (IIASA) in Laxenburg (Austria), created a joint research group to analyze the relationship between economic growth and structural change. The research team was to examine the commodity composition as well as the size and direction of commodity and credit flows among countries and regions. Krelle (1988) reports on the results of this "Bonn-IIASA" research project. At the same time, an informal IIASA Working Group was initiated to deal with prob lems of the statistical analysis of economic data in the context of structural change: What tools do we have to identify nonconstancy of model parameters? What type of models are particularly applicable to nonconstant structure? How is forecasting affected by the presence of nonconstant structure? What problems should be anticipated in applying these tools and models? Some 50 experts, mainly statisticians or econometricians from about 15 countries, came together in Lodz, Poland (May 1985); Berlin, GDR (June 1986); and Sulejov, Poland (September 1986) to present and discuss their findings. This volume contains a selected set of those conference contributions as well as several specially invited chapters.

Forest ecosystems include a great variety of communities of organisms interacting with their physical environment: multi-aged natural forests, even-aged monocultures, and secondary forests invaded by foreign species. The challenge is to sustain their ability to function, by adapting to changing climates and satisfying a multitude of human demands. Our first chapter sets the scene with a discussion about the effects of forest management on ecosystem services. Details about forest observational infrastructures are introduced in the second chapter. The third chapter presents methods of analysing forest density and structure. Models for estimating the shape and growth of individual forest trees are introduced in chapter 4, models of forest community production in Chapter 5. Methods and examples of sustainable forest design are covered in chapter 6. New scientific contributions continue to emerge as we are writing, and this work is never finished. We hope to continue with regular updates replacing obsolete sections with new ones, but the general aim remains the same, to introduce a range of methods that will assist those interested in sustaining forest ecosystems.
