Plants produce a considerable number of structures of one kind, like leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds, and this reiteration is a quintessential feature of the body plan of higher plants. But since not all structures of the same kind produced by a plant are identical—for instance, different branches on a plant may be male or female, leaf sizes in the sun differ from those in the shade, and fruit sizes can vary depending on patterns of physiological allocation among branches—a single plant genotype generally produces a multiplicity of phenotypic versions of the same organ. Multiplicity in Unity uses this subindividual variation to deepen our understanding of the ecological and evolutionary factors involved in plant-animal interactions. On one hand, phenotypic variation at the subindividual scale has diverse ecological implications for animals that eat plants. On the other hand, by choosing which plants to consume, these animals may constrain or modify plant ontogenetic patterns, developmental stability, and the extent to which feasible phenotypic variants are expressed by individuals. An innovative study of the ecology, morphology, and evolution of modular organisms, Multiplicity in Unity addresses a topic central to our understanding of the diversity of life and the ways in which organisms have coevolved to cope with variable environments.
The Nature Of The Sufi Path

The Nature Of The Sufi Path written by Anab Whitehouse and has been published by Bilquees Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-11-06 with Religion categories.
The material in The Nature of the Sufi Path consists of 70 commentaries on a book entitled Sufism: A Short Introduction by Professor William C. Chittick. Many, if not most, of the paragraphs that comprise the 163 pages (preface plus text) of Professor Chittick’s book contain problems, errors, misleading statements, and/or incorrect understandings concerning Islam, in general, and the Sufi path, in particular. This is both surprising and disturbing since the author is someone who, apparently, enjoys a considerable reputation in North America -- and, perhaps, elsewhere in the world -- as an expert on, and scholar of, the Sufi mystical tradition. I do not claim that what I say in this book is a definitive, exhaustive, ‘incapable-of-being-improved-upon’ treatment of the Sufi path. Rather, my hope is that the present book might move a person closer to the truth concerning the nature of that path than Professor Chittick’s aforementioned introduction to Sufism does and, as such, would represent an improvement over his work.

Glimpses Of The Fathomless Mysteries Of Zoroaster written by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, Alexander Wilder and has been published by Philaletheians UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on with Religion categories.
Part 1. Lucid glimpses of the fathomless Mysteries of Zoroaster. By Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, Co-founder of the Theosophical Society. Zoroaster is a generic title: there were several prophets of that name; and so is Thoth-Hermes. There were several Zarathushtras or Zertusts, the Dabistan alone enumerating thirteen; but these were all reincarnations of the first one. It was on the new continent of Atlantis that Zarathushtra became the law-giver and ruler of the Fourth Race. Zoroaster was the founder of Magian religion and reformer of Magic, as practiced by the Chaldeans and the old Egyptians, however, not the founder of Divine Magic or Theurgy. The last Zarathushtra, of the Desatir, compiled the Vendidad. The prehistoric Zoroastrian Gheber Temple of Baku was a study centre for generations of Zoroastrian hermits, overseen by a High Mobed. The Zoroastrians, the Mazdeans, and the Persians borrowed their conceptions from India; the Jews borrowed their theory of angels from Persia; and the Christians borrowed theirs from the Jews. The earliest Zoroastrians did not believe in evil, or darkness, being co-eternal with Good or Light. The Hebrew Elohim are Forces and Generative Powers of Nature, but are involved in material creation only; they are identical with the Aryan Asuras. The Zoroastrian Amshaspends create the world in six “days” or periods, and rest on the seventh; the latter is the first period or “day,” i.e., the Primary Creation in the Aryan Cosmogony. Zoroaster, the renowned Sage of remote Antiquity, is transformed by Christian bigots into a “slave of Daniel;” and by one Christian writer, as contemporary of Darius Hystaspes. The doctrines of the Desatir are identical with those of the Secret Doctrine and the Greek Philosophers. With select Gems from the Book of Prophet Jemshid. Part 2. Spiritual insights into the Universal Wisdom-Religion of Zoroaster. By Professor Alexander Wilder, M.D., Vice-President of the Theosophical Society.

The Visibility Of The Image written by Lambert Wiesing and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-09-22 with Philosophy categories.
Now available in English for the first time, The Visibility of the Image explores the development of an influential aesthetic tradition through the work of six figures. Analysing their contribution to the progress of formal aesthetics, from its origins in Germany in the 1880s to semiotic interpretations in America a century later, the six chapters cover: Robert Zimmermann (1824-1898), the first to separate aesthetics and metaphysics and approach aesthetics along the lines of formal logic, providing a purely syntactic way of using signs, regardless of objective content; Alois Riegl (1858-1905), who went on to further develop aesthetics on the model of formal logic, creating a theory of style in response to Zimmermann's call for an aesthetics oriented toward formal logic; Heinrich Wölfflin (1864-1945), who represents a step toward an understanding of consciousness by using pictures as cognitive tools; Konrad Fiedler (1841-1895), the Saxon philosopher who considered the possibility that some kinds of images are made and viewed not for what they show, but for their visibility's sake alone; Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1908-1961), responsible for taking up the connections between the problems of reducing the range of potential meanings and contexts of a given image down to just the picture surface; Charles William Morris (1901-1979), who set out to establish whether a picture with no objective reference, such as an abstract painting, still counts as a sign, and if so, in what sense. Bringing these thinkers together and interlinking their ideas, Lambert Wiesing presents an engaging history of formal aesthetics, while reconstructing the philosophical foundations for the appearance of new image forms in the 20th century, including the video-clip, abstract collage, digital simulation and virtual reality. Using this original approach, The Visibility of the Image introduces the rise of modern image theory and provides a valuable account of our engagement with pictures in the 21st century.

“Contradiction” is a core concept in the humanities and the social sciences. Beside the classical ideas of logical or dialectical contradiction, instances of “lived” contradiction and strategies of coping with it are objects of this study. Contradiction Studies discuss the many ways in which explicit or implicit contradictions are negotiated in different political or cultural settings. This volume collects articles that tackle the concept of contradiction, practices of contradicting and lived contradictions from a number of relevant perspectives and assembles contributions from linguistics, literary studies, philosophy, political science, and media studies.

The Anthology of the Works of Ugo Spirito captures the trajectory of Ugo Spirito’s complex body of thought that spanned more than fifty years, from 1921 to 1977. While confronting difficult contemporary problems related to philosophy and science, liberalism and socialism, fascism and communism, and other economic and ideological aspects such as corporativism and democracy, Spirito revealed a persistent desire to reach truth and the absolute. Yet, he also voiced his failure to remain faithful to any philosophical or political system considered definitive and unquestionable. Unable to reach incontrovertibility, he consistently dissected the prevailing contemporary ideas and systems, including his own beliefs, developing at the same time the ‘antinomic’ approach, a method of critical analysis that undermined any truth reputed irrefutable. Today, Spirito stands as one of most anti-conformist Italian thinkers for he challenged the certainties of modern thought.
