This book explores damage growth and fracture processes in cementitious, ceramic, polymer and metal matrix composites, integrating properties like stiffness and strength with observation at below macroscopic scale. Advances in multiscale modelling and analysis pertain directly to materials which either have a range of relevant microstructural scales, like metals, or do not have a well-defined microstructure, like cementitious or ceramic composites.

The IUTAM Symposium on?Multiscale Modelling of Damage and Fracture Processes in Composite Materials? was held in Kazimierz Dolny, Poland, 23 -27 May 2005. The Symposium was attended by 48 persons from 15 countries. During 5 day meeting, 4 keynote lectures and 39 invited lectures were presented. This volume constitutes the Proceedings of the IUTAM Symposium. The main aim of the Symposium was to discuss the basic principles of damage growth and fracture processes in different types of composites: ceramic, polymer and metal matrix composites, cement and bituminous composites and wood. Nowadays, it is widely recognized that important macroscopic properties like the macroscopic stiffness and strength, are governed by processes that occur at one to several scales below the level of observation starting from nanoscale. Understanding how these processes influence the reduction of stiffness and strength is essential for the analysis of existing and the design of improved composite materials. The study of how these various length scales can be linked together or taken into account simultaneously is particular attractive for composite materials, since they have a well-defined structure at the nano, micro and meso-levels. The well-defined microstructural level can be associated with small particles or fibres, while the individual laminae can be indentified at the mesoscopic level. Moreover, the advances in multiscale modelling of damage and fracture processes to the description of the complete constitutive behaviour in composites which do not have a very well-defined microstructure, e.g. cementitious, bitumous composites and wood was analysed.

Flaws are the principal source of fracture in many materials, whether brittle or ductile, whether nearly homogeneous or composite. They are introduced during either fabrication or surface preparation or during exposure to aggressive environments (e. g. oxidation, shocks). The critical flaws act as stress concentrators and initiate cracks that propagate instantaneously to failure in the absence of crack arrest phenomena as encountered in brittle materials. This book explores those brittle materials susceptible to crack arrest and the flaws which initiate crack induced damage. A detailed description of microstructural features covering numerous brittle materials, including ceramics, glass, concrete, metals, polymers and ceramic fibers to help you develop your knowledge of material fracture. Brittle Failure and Damage of Brittle Materials and Composites outlines the technological progress in this field and the need for reliable systems with high performances to help you advance the development of new structural materials, creating advantages of low density, high resistance to elevated temperatures and aggressive environments, and good mechanical properties. The effects of flaw populations on fracture strength The main statistical-probabilistic approaches to brittle fracture The use of these methods for predictions of failure and effects induced by flaw populations The application of these methods to component design The methods of estimation of statistical parameters that define flaw strength distributions The extension of these approaches to damage and failure of continuous fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites

One of the most important and exciting areas of composites research is the development of modelling techniques to predict the response of composite materials to different types of stress. Predictive modelling provides the opportunity both to understand better how composites behave in different conditions and to develop materials with enhanced performance for particular industrial applications. Multi-scale modelling of composite material systems summarises the key research in this area and its implications for industry. The book covers modelling approaches ranging from the micron to the metre in scale, and from the single fibre to complete composite structures. Individual chapters discuss a variety of material types from laminates and fibre-reinforced composites to monolithic and sandwich composites. They also analyse a range of types of stress and stress response from fracture and impact to wear and fatigue. Authors also discuss the strengths and weaknesses of particular models. With its distinguished editors and international team of contributors, Multi-scale modelling of composite material systems is a standard reference for both academics and manufacturers in such areas as aerospace, automotive and civil engineering. Extensive coverage of this important and exciting area of composites research Understand how composites behave in different circumstances Compiled by an expert panel of authors and editors

Today, multi-functional materials such as piezoelectric/ferroelectric ceramics, magneto-strictive and shape memory alloys are gaining increasing applications as sensors, actuators or smart composite materials systems for emerging high tech areas. The stable performance and reliability of these smart components under complex service loads is of paramount practical importance. However, most multi-functional materials suffer from various mechanical and/or electro-magnetical degra-dation mechanisms as fatigue, damage and fracture. Therefore, this exciting topic has become a challenge to intensive international research, provoking the interdisciplinary approach between solid mechanics, materials science and physics. This book summarizes the outcome of the above mentioned IUTAM-symposium, assembling contributions by leading scientists in this area. Particularly, the following topics have been addressed: (1) Development of computational methods for coupled electromechanical field analysis, especially extended, adaptive and multi-level finite elements. (2) Constitutive modeling of non-linear smart material behavior with coupled electric, magnetic, thermal and mechanical fields, primarily based on micro-mechanical models. (3) Investigations of fracture and fatigue in piezoelectric and ferroelectric ceramics by means of process zone modeling, phase field simulation and configurational mechanics. (4) Reliability and durability of sensors and actuators under in service loading by alternating mechanical, electrical and thermal fields. (5) Experimental methods to measure fracture strength and to investigate fatigue crack growth in ferroelectric materials under electromechanical loading. (6) New ferroelectric materials, compounds and composites with enhanced strain capabilities.

Damage Modeling of Composite Structures: Strength, Fracture, and Finite Element Analysis provides readers with a fundamental overview of the mechanics of composite materials, along with an outline of an array of modeling and numerical techniques used to analyze damage, failure mechanisms and safety tolerance. Strength prediction and finite element analysis of laminated composite structures are both covered, as are modeling techniques for delaminated composites under compression and shear. Viscoelastic cohesive/friction coupled model and finite element analysis for delamination analysis of composites under shear and for laminates under low-velocity impact are all covered at length. A concluding chapter discusses multiscale damage models and finite element analysis of composite structures. Integrates intralaminar damage and interlaminar delamination under different load patterns, covering intralaminar damage constitutive models, failure criteria, damage evolution laws, and virtual crack closure techniques Discusses numerical techniques for progressive failure analysis and modeling, as well as numerical convergence and mesh sensitivity, thus allowing for more accurate modeling Features models and methods that can be seamlessly extended to analyze failure mechanisms and safety tolerance of composites under more complex loads, and in more extreme environments Demonstrates applications of damage models and numerical methods
