"Multivariate Calculus and Geometry Concepts" is a comprehensive textbook designed to provide students, researchers, and practitioners with a thorough understanding of fundamental concepts, techniques, and applications in multivariate calculus and geometry. Authored by experts, we offer a balanced blend of theoretical foundations, practical examples, and computational methods, making it suitable for both classroom instruction and self-study. We cover a wide range of topics, including partial derivatives, gradients, line and surface integrals, parametric equations, polar coordinates, conic sections, and differential forms. Each topic is presented clearly and concisely, with detailed explanations and illustrative examples to aid understanding. Our emphasis is on developing a conceptual understanding of key concepts and techniques, rather than rote memorization of formulas. We include numerous figures, diagrams, and geometric interpretations to help readers visualize abstract mathematical concepts and their real-world applications. Practical applications of multivariate calculus and geometry are highlighted throughout the book, with examples drawn from physics, engineering, computer graphics, and other fields. We demonstrate how these concepts are used to solve real-world problems and inspire readers to apply their knowledge in diverse areas. We discuss computational methods and numerical techniques used in multivariate calculus and geometry, such as numerical integration, optimization algorithms, and finite element methods. Programming exercises and computer simulations provide hands-on experience with implementing and applying these methods. Our supplementary resources include online tutorials, solution manuals, and interactive simulations, offering additional guidance, practice problems, and opportunities for further exploration and self-assessment. "Multivariate Calculus and Geometry Concepts" is suitable for undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics, engineering, physics, computer science, and related disciplines. It also serves as a valuable reference for researchers, educators, and professionals seeking a comprehensive overview of multivariate calculus and geometry and its applications in modern science and technology.

Multivariate calculus can be understood best by combining geometric insight, intuitive arguments, detailed explanations and mathematical reasoning. This textbook not only follows this programme, but additionally provides a solid description of the basic concepts, via familiar examples, which are then tested in technically demanding situations. In this new edition the introductory chapter and two of the chapters on the geometry of surfaces have been revised. Some exercises have been replaced and others provided with expanded solutions. Familiarity with partial derivatives and a course in linear algebra are essential prerequisites for readers of this book. Multivariate Calculus and Geometry is aimed primarily at higher level undergraduates in the mathematical sciences. The inclusion of many practical examples involving problems of several variables will appeal to mathematics, science and engineering students.

One of the authors' stated goals for this publication is to "modernize" the course through the integration of Mathematica. Besides introducing students to the multivariable uses of Mathematica, and instructing them on how to use it as a tool in simplifying calculations, they also present intoductions to geometry, mathematical physics, and kinematics, topics of particular interest to engineering and physical science students. In using Mathematica as a tool, the authors take pains not to use it simply to define things as a whole bunch of new "gadgets" streamlined to the taste of the authors, but rather they exploit the tremendous resources built into the program. They also make it clear that Mathematica is not algorithms. At the same time, they clearly see the ways in which Mathematica can make things cleaner, clearer and simpler. The problem sets give students an opportunity to practice their newly learned skills, covering simple calculations with Mathematica, simple plots, a review of one-variable calculus using Mathematica for symbolic differentiation, integration and numberical integration. They also cover the practice of incorporating text and headings into a Mathematica notebook. A DOS-formatted diskette accompanies the printed work, containing both Mathematica 2.2 and 3.0 version notebooks, as well as sample examination problems for students. This supplementary work can be used with any standard multivariable calculus textbook. It is assumed that in most cases students will also have access to an introductory primer for Mathematica.

This book provides a unique tour of university mathematics with the help of Python. Written in the spirit of mathematical exploration and investigation, the book enables students to utilise Python to enrich their understanding of mathematics through: Calculation: performing complex calculations and numerical simulations instantly Visualisation: demonstrating key theorems with graphs, interactive plots and animations Extension: using numerical findings as inspiration for making deeper, more general conjectures. This book is for all learners of mathematics, with the primary audience being mathematics undergraduates who are curious to see how Python can enhance their understanding of core university material. The topics chosen represent a mathematical overview of what students typically study in the first and second years at university, namely analysis, calculus, vector calculus and geometry, differential equations and dynamical systems, linear algebra, abstract algebra and number theory, probability and statistics. As such, it can also serve as a preview of university mathematics for high-school students. The prerequisites for reading the book are a familiarity with standard A-Level mathematics (or equivalent senior high-school curricula) and a willingness to learn programming. For mathematics lecturers and teachers, this book is a useful resource on how Python can be seamlessly incorporated into the mathematics syllabus, assuming only basic knowledge of programming.

Because the properties of objects are largely determined by their geometric features, shape analysis and classification are essential to almost every applied scientific and technological area. A detailed understanding of the geometrical features of real-world entities (e.g., molecules, organs, materials and components) can provide important clues about their origin and function. When properly and carefully applied, shape analysis offers an exceedingly rich potential to yield useful applications in diverse areas ranging from material sciences to biology and neuroscience. Get Access to the Authors’ Own Cutting-Edge Open-Source Software Projects—and Then Actually Contribute to Them Yourself! The authors of Shape Analysis and Classification: Theory and Practice, Second Edition have improved the bestselling first edition by updating the tremendous progress in the field. This exceptionally accessible book presents the most advanced imaging techniques used for analyzing general biological shapes, such as those of cells, tissues, organs, and organisms. It implements numerous corrections and improvements—many of which were suggested by readers of the first edition—to optimize understanding and create what can truly be called an interactive learning experience. New Material in This Second Edition Addresses Graph and complex networks Dimensionality reduction Structural pattern recognition Shape representation using graphs Graphically reformulated, this edition updates equations, figures, and references, as well as slides that will be useful in related courses and general discussion. Like the popular first edition, this text is applicable to many fields and certain to become a favored addition to any library. This clear, concise and highly readable text is designed for a first course in linear algebra and is intended for undergraduate courses in mathematics. It focusses throughout on geometric explanations to make the student perceive that linear algebra is nothing but analytic geometry of n dimensions. From the very start, linear algebra is presented as an extension of the theory of simultaneous linear equations and their geometric interpretation is shown to be a recurring theme of the subject. The integration of abstract algebraic concepts with the underlying geometric notions is one of the most distinguishing features of this book — designed to help students in the pursuit of multivariable calculus and differential geometry in subsequent courses.Explanations and concepts are logically presented in a conversational tone and well-constructed writing style so that students at a variety of levels can understand the material and acquire a solid foundation in the basic skills of linear algebra.
