Multivariate Statistics and Probability: Essays in Memory of Paruchuri R. Krishnaiah is a collection of essays on multivariate statistics and probability in memory of Paruchuri R. Krishnaiah (1932-1987), who made significant contributions to the fields of multivariate statistical analysis and stochastic theory. The papers cover the main areas of multivariate statistical theory and its applications, as well as aspects of probability and stochastic analysis. Topics range from finite sampling and asymptotic results, including aspects of decision theory, Bayesian analysis, classical estimation, regression, and time-series problems. Comprised of 35 chapters, this book begins with a discussion on the joint asymptotic distribution of marginal quantiles and quantile functions in samples from a multivariate population. The reader is then introduced to kernel estimators of density function of directional data; moment conditions for valid formal edgeworth expansions; and ergodicity and central limit theorems for a class of Markov processes. Subsequent chapters focus on minimal complete classes of invariant tests for equality of normal covariance matrices and sphericity; normed likelihood as saddlepoint approximation; generalized Gaussian random fields; and smoothness properties of the conditional expectation in finitely additive white noise filtering. This monograph should be of considerable interest to researchers as well as to graduate students working in theoretical and applied statistics, multivariate analysis, and random processes.

The Wiley-Interscience Paperback Series consists of selected books that have been made more accessible to consumers in an effort to increase global appeal and general circulation. With these new unabridged softcover volumes, Wiley hopes to extend the lives of these works by making them available to future generations of statisticians, mathematicians, and scientists. ". . . the wealth of material on statistics concerning the multivariate normal distribution is quite exceptional. As such it is a very useful source of information for the general statistician and a must for anyone wanting to penetrate deeper into the multivariate field." -Mededelingen van het Wiskundig Genootschap "This book is a comprehensive and clearly written text on multivariate analysis from a theoretical point of view." -The Statistician Aspects of Multivariate Statistical Theory presents a classical mathematical treatment of the techniques, distributions, and inferences based on multivariate normal distribution. Noncentral distribution theory, decision theoretic estimation of the parameters of a multivariate normal distribution, and the uses of spherical and elliptical distributions in multivariate analysis are introduced. Advances in multivariate analysis are discussed, including decision theory and robustness. The book also includes tables of percentage points of many of the standard likelihood statistics used in multivariate statistical procedures. This definitive resource provides in-depth discussion of the multivariate field and serves admirably as both a textbook and reference.

Multivariate Analysis deals with observations on more than one variable where there is some inherent interdependence between the variables. With several texts already available in this area, one may very well enquire of the authors as to the need for yet another book. Most of the available books fall into two categories, either theoretical or data analytic. The present book not only combines the two approaches but it also has been guided by the need to give suitable matter for the beginner as well as illustrating some deeper aspects of the subject for the research worker. Practical examples are kept to the forefront and, wherever feasible, each technique is motivated by such an example.

Studies in Econometrics, Time Series, and Multivariate Statistics covers the theoretical and practical aspects of econometrics, social sciences, time series, and multivariate statistics. This book is organized into three parts encompassing 28 chapters. Part I contains studies on logit model, normal discriminant analysis, maximum likelihood estimation, abnormal selection bias, and regression analysis with a categorized explanatory variable. This part also deals with prediction-based tests for misspecification in nonlinear simultaneous systems and the identification in models with autoregressive errors. Part II highlights studies in time series, including time series analysis of error-correction models, time series model identification, linear random fields, segmentation of time series, and some basic asymptotic theory for linear processes in time series analysis. Part III contains papers on optimality properties in discrete multivariate analysis, Anderson’s probability inequality, and asymptotic distributions of test statistics. This part also presents the comparison of measures, multivariate majorization, and of experiments for some multivariate normal situations. Studies on Bayes procedures for combining independent F tests and the limit theorems on high dimensional spheres and Stiefel manifolds are included. This book will prove useful to statisticians, mathematicians, and advance mathematics students.

Get up-to-speed on the latest methods of multivariate statistics Multivariate statistical methods provide a powerful tool for analyzing data when observations are taken over a period of time on the same subject. With the advent of fast and efficient computers and the availability of computer packages such as S-plus and SAS, multivariate methods once too complex to tackle are now within reach of most researchers and data analysts. With an emphasis on computing techniques in combination with a full understanding of the mathematics behind the methods, Methods of Multivariate Statistics offers an up-to-date account of multivariate methods. Focusing on the maximum likelihood method for estimation, testing of hypotheses, and "profile analysis," this book offers comprehensive discussions of commonly encountered multivariate data and also covers some practical and important problems lacking in other texts. These include: * Missing at-random observations * "Growth Curve Models" and multivariate one-sided tests applicable in pharmaceutical and medical trials * Bootstrap methods * Principal component method for predicting a multivariate response vector * Outlier detection and handling inference when covariance is singular With clear chapter introductions and numerous problem sets, Methods of Multivariate Statistics meets every statistician's need for a comprehensive investigation of the latest methods in multivariate statistics.
