How are men, masculinities and gender power implicated within global institutions? How are global institutions to be understood in terms of men, masculinities and gender power? What are men up to in such arenas as: global finance, corporate law, military intelligence, world sporting bodies and nationalist politics? Unsustainable Institutions of Men examines men’s dealings in transnational processes across the economy, politics, technologies and bodies. In exploring the men’s domination of institutions in national and transnational realms this volume underpins a novel approach built around multiple "dispersed centres" of men’s power. Indeed, in critical discussions of men and masculinities there has been a gradual shift in focus from the local, so-called ‘ethnographic moment’, to a broader view encompassing several dynamics (e.g. global, transnational, international, postcolonial and the global north-south). Vzpomínky začal Karel Engliš psát v roce 1925, kdy mu bylo 45 let, a s přestávkami na nich pracoval až do konce svého života v roce 1961. Vzniklo tak několik ucelených tematických souborů. Nejde tedy o klasický životopis. Tím je však kniha osobitá a zvláštní. Dovoluje nám nahlédnout, jakými tématy se Engliš v příslušné době zabýval, co považoval za nutné komentovat, zaznamenat. Poskytuje čtenáři možnost poznat Englišův bystrý pozorovací talent a neobyčejnou paměť. S odstupem desetiletí dokáže Karel Engliš líčit události a popisovat osobnosti tak detailně, jako by je prožil či viděl včera. Z textů psaných téměř čtyřicet let na čtenáře zapůsobí Englišovy typické povahové vlastnosti: přímost, pravdomluvnost. Sám v textu uvádí: „Mluvím pravdivě, co si myslím, ať uvalím na sebe číkoli hněv. Tak jsem to dělal po celých 80 let.“ Zaujme jeho laskavost, tolerance, nesmírná pracovitost, uspořádanost myšlenek i smysl pro humor.

Vliv a význam náboženství a křesťanské tradice ve specifické kulturně-geografické konstrukci střední Evropy se stal významným impulsem pro tvorbu národních (sebe)obrazů. Tato kniha se zamýšlí nad duchovně a nábožensky orientovanými literárními aktivitami, které byly rovněž využity jako prostředek kulturní homogenizace a kulturní diverzifikace. Ve snaze přitáhnout pozornost veřejnosti k možnostem různých pohledů na literární obrazy, klišé, národní symboly či mýty používají autoři nástroje srovnávací imagologie. Zohledňují různé významné neliterární okolnosti a rozšiřují diskurz analýzou kulturních obrazů křesťanské tradice právě jako prostředku kulturní a národní (sebe)identifikace. Publikace tak přispívá k mezikulturnímu dialogu a stává se cenným vstupem do probíhající diskuse o významu literární tvorby autorů spojených s nábožensko-duchovními hodnotami z hlediska vytváření (vlastního) kulturního obrazu.

Darwinismus se vydává za úplnou teorii biologického života, včetně lidského. Má podstatný vliv na sebepojetí dnešního člověka a jeho světonázor. Emeritní profesor Masarykovy univerzity, lékař a filozof Jiří Vácha ve své jedinečné knize shrnuje nejen současnou vědeckou kritiku darwinismu, ale celý problém rozšiřuje ještě o „vědomí“, jako nejspecifičtější vlastnost živých bytostí. Kromě fyzické stránky organismů se vyvíjela i jejich stránka prožitková, která není v darwinismu jako taková dostatečně brána v úvahu. Moderní přírodní věda kráčející ve stopách Descartova mechanismu si přístup k řešení tohoto zásadního problému už a priori uzavřela a je nucena přepustit jistou část úkolu filosofii. I přes poměrně široký vědecký záběr je kniha až překvapivě čtivá, autor vysvětluje složité věci jasným a jednoduchým jazykem.

Docent Masarykovy univerzity, člen Obce spisovatelů, prozaik a divadelní režisér Josef Prokeš ve své knize zkoumá komplexní estetickou výstavbu písní sedmi stěžejních osobností českého folku 60.–80. let 20. století: Karla Kryla, Vladimíra Merty, Vlastimila Třešňáka, Jaroslava Hutky, Jaromíra Nohavici, Karla Plíhala a Slávka Janouška. Rozebírá vždy jednu jejich typickou píseň, kterou pojímá jako synekdochu celého autora, zdůrazňuje klíčové motivy a upozorňuje na jejich vývoj v rámci autorského kontextu. Chápe současně jednotlivé analyzované písně jako svazek sil vyvažujících se ve vzájemně protikladných napětích a zahrnuje do výkladů rovněž vše, co zkoumané písně obklopuje a vchází s nimi ve styk. Osobnosti zkoumaných folkových písničkářů práce chápe jako souhrn dynamických složek celku moderního českého folku, jejichž působnost je určována jejich vlastními dispozicemi i vzájemnými vztahy, jakož i vztahem jednoho každého z nich k folku domácímu i světovému.
