Since 1991 the city of Joliet, Illinois, has commissioned painters for a series of public murals. Free to use their own styles and follow their particular visions, the artists gave Joliet a diverse and dramatic body of public art that is also a statement of civic pride and a revival of a venerable midwestern tradition. Arrayed with color plates of the murals and accompanied by biographical sketches of the artists, this impressive volume documents the rich ethnic, racial, and cultural heritage that informs the art. An old industrial city thirty-five miles south of Chicago, Joliet has a mixed ethnic population. The murals of Joliet reflect this diversity, featuring the experiences of African Americans, Mexican Americans, Italian Americans, German and Irish immigrants, and the city's Slovenian community. Bold, colorful pieces acknowledge industrial and natural resources, including the Illinois and Michigan Canal, the Des Plaines River, the region's limestone quarries, and the Sauk trail. They pay tribute to the area's farmers as well as to individuals such as labor leader Samuel Gompers and the dancer, choreographer, and anthropologist Katherine Dunham. Above all, Murals: The Great Walls of Joliet documents the profound transformation in the local mentality wrought by the development of public art in the city. Underwritten by a community group, Friends of Community Public Art, the Joliet murals project stands as a model for modern municipal patronage, evidence of a population's decision to invest in public art to enrich its environment and express the ideals of the whole community.

The Essential New Art Examiner written by Terri Griffith and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-12-01 with Art categories.

The New Art Examiner was the only successful art magazine ever to come out of Chicago. It had nearly a three-decade long run, and since its founding in 1974 by Jane Addams Allen and Derek Guthrie, no art periodical published in the Windy City has lasted longer or has achieved the critical mass of readers and admirers that it did. The Essential New Art Examiner gathers the most memorable and celebrated articles from this seminal publication. First a newspaper, then a magazine, the New Art Examiner succeeded unlike no other periodical of its time. Before the word "blog" was ever spoken, it was the source of news and information for Chicago-area artists. And as its reputation grew, the New Art Examiner gained a national audience and exercised influence far beyond the Midwest. As one critic put it, "it fought beyond its weight class." The articles in The Essential New Art Examiner are organized chronologically. Each section of the book begins with a new essay by the original editor of the pieces therein that reconsiders the era and larger issues at play in the art world when they were first published. The result is a fascinating portrait of the individuals who ran the New Art Examiner and an inside look at the artistic trends and aesthetic agendas that guided it. Derek Guthrie and Jane Addams Allen, for instance, had their own renegade style. James Yood never shied away from a good fight. And Ann Wiens was heralded for embracing technologies and design. The story of the New Art Examiner is the story of a constantly evolving publication, shaped by talented editors and the times in which it was printed. Now, more than three decades after the journal's founding, The Essential New Art Examiner brings together the best examples of this groundbreaking publication: great editing, great writing, a feisty staff who changed and adapted as circumstances dictated—a publication that rolled with the times and the art of the times. With passion, insight, and editorial brilliance, the staff of the New Art Examiner turned a local magazine into a national institution.

In The Art of Placemaking, Ronald Lee Fleming adopts a practical approach to tackling public art and community planning in the US as they are experienced today. Through detailed, in-depth case studies he discusses the development of placemaking initiatives since 1990, accompanying beautiful and approachable examples with constructive criticism of those he sees as less successful. The case studies deal with varied project, ranging from a clock with bronze bells that marks the gateway to downtown Cincinnati to the beautification of a water treatment plant in Cambridge, Masschusetts; and from a terrazzo floor incorporating sea-creatures at Miami International Airport Florida, to a firefighters' memorial in Boston.

"Friends of Community Public Art (FCPA) is an example of how an organization can make a positive and exciting difference to an entire city through creative contributions. Their public art program has transformed the City of Joliet, Illinois by engaging residents in creating and viewing art; honoring its noted citizens through commemorative poetry, sculpture and murals; heightening public awareness of the history of their city; and exposing people of all ages and backgrounds to a variety of art forms. The education, therefore, is not limited to the stories told by the art - but is also in the works of art themselves. The collaborative effort between FCPA and the City of Joliet is an example of how art can bring new life to a community and engage its citizens in a shared pride in what distinguishes their City, through public art."--BOOK JACKET.
