Sir Laurence Dies is a murder mystery in the Agatha Christie style. It's a “whodunit”! A story of intrigue, guile and red herrings, half a dozen suspects, and a murder to boot. Just what is the morose butler, Dawson, hiding behind that stone faced reserve? Why does Lady Agatha Smythe carry around an old photograph of her younger days, and what exactly is her relationship to Major John Heskith? Is Milly Gregson the meek girl she seems to be, and is Desmond DuPont's interest in her more than simply platonic? Is the debonair Doctor Jacob Powell the lady's man that local gossip suggests? It was never going to be an easy task to put this puzzle together when they don't have all the pieces, or any idea what the picture might be. However that's exactly what Doctor Straay and Chief Inspector Drake must do, if they intend to find the murderer of Sir Laurence Gregson; but can they work together to solve this murder, or will their antithetical differences on psychology and police work stop them before they even start…?

Walter B Frampton, II Esq., has never been an avid hunter like his forefathers or even his best friend Drake Wingo. He'd rather be dipping sour marsh whisky, reading Vanity Fair, and listening to Mozart. But when Drake and Cliff Dickens, another old friend, ask him along on a grouse-hunting trip, he decides to go. One ruffed grouse is already bagged when the unthinkable happens - the fourth member of their group, a quiet and polite stranger, is accidentally shot and killed. But when the details don't quite add up, Walter begins to have his doubts. Was it an accident? Is his friend a murderer? As events begin to spin out of control, only Walter can find out what really happened that fateful day on the mountain ridge.

Renaissance Mass Murder written by Stephen D. Bowd and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-11-08 with History categories.

Renaissance Mass Murder explores the devastating impact of war on the men and women of the Renaissance. In contrast to the picture of balance and harmony usually associated with the Renaissance, it uncovers in forensic detail a world in which sacks of Italian cities and massacres of civilians at the hands of French, German, Spanish, Swiss, and Italian troops were regular occurrences. The arguments presented are based on a wealth of evidence - histories and chronicles, poetry and paintings, sculpture and other objects - which together provide a new and startling history of sixteenth-century Italy and a social history of the Italian Wars. It outlines how massacres happened, how princes, soldiers, lawyers, and writers justified and explained such events, and how they were represented in contemporary culture. On this basis, Renaissance Mass Murder reconstructs the terrifying individual experiences of civilians in the face of war and in doing so offers a story of human tragedy which redresses the balance of the history of the Italian Wars, and of Renaissance warfare, in favour of the civilian and away from the din of battle. This volume also places mass murder in a broader historical context and challenges claims that such violence was unusual or in decline in early modern Europe. Finally, it shows that women often suffered disproportionately from this violence and that immunity for them, as for their children, was often partially developed or poorly respected.

The World Of Prometheus written by Danielle S. Allen and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-01-10 with History categories.

For Danielle Allen, punishment is more a window onto democratic Athens' fundamental values than simply a set of official practices. From imprisonment to stoning to refusal of burial, instances of punishment in ancient Athens fueled conversations among ordinary citizens and political and literary figures about the nature of justice. Re-creating in vivid detail the cultural context of this conversation, Allen shows that punishment gave the community an opportunity to establish a shining myth of harmony and cleanliness: that the city could be purified of anger and social struggle, and perfect order achieved. Each member of the city--including notably women and slaves--had a specific role to play in restoring equilibrium among punisher, punished, and society. The common view is that democratic legal processes moved away from the "emotional and personal" to the "rational and civic," but Allen shows that anger, honor, reciprocity, spectacle, and social memory constantly prevailed in Athenian law and politics. Allen draws upon oratory, tragedy, and philosophy to present the lively intellectual climate in which punishment was incurred, debated, and inflicted by Athenians. Broad in scope, this book is one of the first to offer both a full account of punishment in antiquity and an examination of the political stakes of democratic punishment. It will engage classicists, political theorists, legal historians, and anyone wishing to learn more about the relations between institutions and culture, normative ideas and daily events, punishment and democracy.

In 1127 Charles the Good, count of Flanders, was surrounded by assassins while at prayer and killed by a sword blow to the forehead. His murder upset the fragile balance of power between England, France, and the Holy Roman Empire, giving rise to a bloody civil war while impacting the commercial life of medieval Europe. The eyewitness account by the Flemish cleric Galbert of Bruges of the assassination and the struggle for power that ensued is the only journal to have survived from twelfth century Europe. This new translation by medieval studies expert Jeff Rider greatly improves upon all previous versions, substantially advancing scholarship on the Middle Ages while granting new life and immediacy to Galbert’s well informed and courageously candid narrative.

If one is looking for answers to the meaning of life and how to make a happier, richer existence—e.g., relationships, finances, health—then Neville’s teaching from personal experience, testimonies from students, and his amazing visions paralleling and explaining the mysteries of the Old and New Testament will answer those questions. Learn his techniques, unleash your power to create, believe in your imaginal acts, and no power in this world can stop the desired results from appearing in your world. It’s the only creative power, one that everyone is operating moment to moment. Learning how to direct it deliberately is essential to producing loving, positive changes in one’s life. These 1963 lectures also begin a nine-year odyssey of discovering the deepest meanings of six visions of the End that had unfolded in Neville (1959–1963). The visions are the signs that this long journey as limited man, the terrible opacity and contraction, is over, that the purpose of human life has been completed—man has endured and overcome six thousand years of amnesia plus the fires of experience and has emerged victorious. He’s been transformed by his inner being (I AM, God) back into the divinity he truly is . . . and always was.
