Existen diferentes tipologías de museos: museos de arte, de historia, de ciencia, de sitio. Las grandes urbes del mundo tienen museos de ciudad. Y por fortuna, Bogotá ya cuenta con el museo de ciudad que se merece, el Museo de Bogotá. El proyecto de renovación y fortalecimiento, con miras a la celebración de sus primeros cincuenta años en 2019, constituyó una de las principales apuestas fijadas desde el comienzo de la presente administración del Instituto Distrital de Patrimonio Cultural –IDPC–, entendida como una poderosa estrategia de divulgación y apropiación del patrimonio cultural bogotano, en su significado más amplio, con el fin de hacer del Museo un lugar para la reflexión acerca de la memoria y la identidad de la capital. En 1968, el alcalde Virgilio Barco Vargas creó el Plan Museos, con el fin de enriquecer la oferta cultural de la ciudad, del cual hacían parte, entre otros, el Museo de Arte de Santa Clara, el de Historia Natural, el Planetario, el Museo de Arte Moderno y el Museo de Desarrollo Urbano. El 11 de julio de 1969, en una histórica casa de la calle 10 abajo de la carrera 4, se abrió este último, el antecesor del Museo de Bogotá. Aquel Museo inicial exhibía ya algunas de las piezas icónicas de la colección, como el viejo tranvía de mulas (que en 2019 regresó a su sede), la urna centenaria, objetos de las empresas de Energía, Acueducto y Teléfonos, fotografías y planos antiguos, maquetas e imágenes del desarrollo de la ciudad. La puesta en funcionamiento del Museo de Desarrollo Urbano fue una saludable noticia para la cultura y el urbanismo capitalino, pero solo 20 años después habría de comenzar la vida azarosa y convulsionada de la institución. En 1989 el Museo se trasladó a la llamada Casa de los Comuneros, diagonal a la Plaza de Bolívar (hoy sede de la Secretaría de Cultura, Recreación y Deporte), hasta 1995, cuando su colección fue almacenada en distintos lugares de la ciudad. En el año 2000 el Museo se reubicó en el Planetario Distrital, aunque sin la posibilidad de exhibir su colección, por lo que se dedicó a la realización de exposiciones temporales. En 2003 el Museo de Desarrollo Urbano, bajo la administración del Instituto Distrital de Cultura y Turismo desde 1978, cambia su nombre a Museo de Bogotá, el cual pasa a cargo del recién creado Instituto Distrital de Patrimonio Cultural en 2006, entidad que sustituyó a la anterior Corporación La Candelaria. A través del proyecto Museo Renovado, con ocasión de los primeros 50 años de existencia, se perseveró para reabrir la Colección Permanente del Museo, guardada por casi 25 años, para lo cual se propusieron varios ejes curatoriales, con base en planteamientos de expertos y de los habitantes de la ciudad, lo que condujo a la definición de los nuevos ejes temáticos que se representan en la amena adecuación de las salas de la casa, denominada como la Casa de los Siete Balcones. Producto de una rigurosa y moderna museografía, se permite ahora hacer un relato por el territorio que ocupamos, los tiempos que esta ciudad ha transcurrido, la evolución física y la de sus modos de vida, así como las dinámicas de los derechos ciudadanos, para hacer de este un museo activo y participativo, un lugar para pensar y reflexionar permanentemente sobre la ciudad.

An historic half-century full of memories, histories, exhibitions, and activities of the Museum through articles, photography, and unpublished documents, that is the result of the cultural activity, the contemporary artistic practices, thematic reflection, and historic research of the MAC's documental archive. Comprises six inserts, three of them triptychs that summarize information with a chronologic design, and the other three are booklets that support inner texts with referential images. For other part, the book "Curadurías: Visiones Contemporáneas" is accompanied by a series of 21 stickers made by recognized graffiti artists that were invited to create designs in the frame of the celebration. This publication also contains 4 curatorial essays written by Caridad Botella, Santiago Rodríguez, Luz Adriana Hoyos, and Gustavo Ortiz about different readings of the MAC's collection. The book is compliments by the chapters "Aproximaciones e inclusiones curatoriales" (Curatorial Inclusions and Approaches,) curatorial works done the last three years in the MAC, and "Nuevas Donaciones" (New Donations,) which reviews 24 of the last artworks donated to the collection by national and international important artists. Also, the chapter stands out the proportional on-scale signs with characters of different audiences that visit the museum. Some artworks of the collection have QR codes to see giga-pixeled artworks in the Google Art Project platform.

In The Politics of Taste Ana María Reyes examines the works of Colombian artist Beatriz González and Argentine-born art critic, Marta Traba, who championed González's art during Colombia's National Front coalition government (1958–74). During this critical period in Latin American art, artistic practice, art criticism, and institutional objectives came into strenuous yet productive tension. While González’s triumphant debut excited critics who wanted to cast Colombian art as modern, sophisticated, and universal, her turn to urban lowbrow culture proved deeply unsettling. Traba praised González's cursi (tacky) recycling aesthetic as daringly subversive and her strategic localism as resistant to U.S. cultural imperialism. Reyes reads González's and Traba's complex visual and textual production and their intertwined careers against Cold War modernization programs that were deeply embedded in the elite's fear of the masses and designed to avert Cuban-inspired revolution. In so doing, Reyes provides fresh insights into Colombia's social anxieties and frustrations while highlighting how interrogations of taste became vital expressions of the growing discontent with the Colombian state.

Gold held a deep symbolic meaning for the pre-Hispanic cultures of present-day Colombia. Its color and brilliance made it analogous with the Sun and a powerful symbol of fertility. Los fragmentos de arte que vemos todos los días en Bogotá tienen como objeto traer a la mente el pasado, son la referencia de actos y personajes que han cumplido un papel importante en la historia de la ciudad y del país. Su propósito no sólo es embellecer nuestra ciudad y convertirla en una especie de “museo a puerta abiertas”, sino que robustecen la memoria. Es por esta razón que el Instituto, con el apoyo de la Secretaria de Planeación Distrital y el Instituto de Desarrollo Urbano, iniciaron el trabajo de elaborar un inventario y valoración de las esculturas y monumentos conmemorativos que se encuentran en el espacio público de Bogotá, primera etapa del cual se desprende esta publicación. Además de ser un catálogo de las piezas ubicadas hoy en el espacio público, esta guía se propuso mostrar, mediante fotografías antiguas, las transformaciones que han sufrido las obras y muchos de los parques, plazuelas, avenidas, rincones sembrados de árboles y jardines que abundaban en la ciudad, que han pasado a ser espacios que dejan a los monumentos como a los bogotanos, sin abrigo ni sombra. Esta publicación también da cuenta de muchos de los monumentos que estuvieron en el espacio público de Bogotá y que han desaparecido sin que se sepa su paradero. Es importante recalcar que está sujeta a cambios en la medida en que se avance en la valoración de la totalidad de las obras, ya que también se están instalando continuamente nuevas obras relacionadas con parques y avenidas, por lo que esta selección no deja de ser aleatoria y el proceso de inventario inconcluso.
