Il libro ha come obiettivo valorizzare e illustrare gli strumenti scientifici più significativi, per la loro rarità, storicità e tecnologia, raccolti nel Museo di Merceologia della Sapienza Università di Roma. Il presente catalogo è stato redatto a conclusione del progetto del MIUR: Information technology and new entities for the knowing, networking and valorisation of the cultural scientific heritage: the role of the network of Academic Museums, che include i diversi reperti dei Musei Universitari italiani. Il catalogo, in doppia lingua italiano-inglese, suddivide gli 83 strumenti scientifici scelti, corredati da una breve descrizione delle loro applicazioni, nei diversi settori merceologici. Esso, inoltre, presenta una panoramica storico-scientifica dell’evoluzione delle tecnologie in questi settori, oltre ad essere una guida per i visitatori del Museo.

Il catalogo illustra i settori ai quali appartengono circa 6000 reperti esposti e inventariati al Museo di Merceologia. Le sezioni del Museo descritte e indicate con dei colori differenti sono le seguenti: legno, carta, combustibili, plastomeri ed elastomeri, cosmesi, detergenti, metalli e leghe, minerali, materiali da costruzione, ceramiche, vetro, concia e prodotti della concia, coloranti, inchiostri, fibre tessili e tessuti, alimenti e derivati, prodotti del mare, tabacco, apparecchi scientifici. La collezione dei reperti è organizzata in una esposizione “ragionata” sulla base delle varie attività economiche e commerciali, al fine di consentire al visitatore la comprensione completa dei procedimenti tecnologici attraverso i quali si realizzano i prodotti finiti a partire dalle materie grezze. L’esposizione, inoltre, evidenzia la continua ricerca di nuove materie prime, in sostituzione di altre, perché esaurite o non più economicamente sfruttabili, illustrando anche le fasi relative alla loro lavorazione al fine di ottenere un nuovo prodotto tecnologicamente avanzato o/e eco-compatibile.

This study, which brings together and consolidates the research work of the interdisciplinary EMHAM group, is focused on the relationship among human mobility, healthcare and fairness in public healthcare and treatment. The investigation of the information produced by the Emergency Departments of the Rome Metropolitan Area has proved to be strategic in identifying the healthcare needs of foreign populations. Many of the dynamics concerning migrants can be traced back to the inappropriateness of visits and accesses to the Emergency Departments. This information, together with the result of dynamic evaluations and assessments, is useful not only for healthcare issues, but also for the demographic, socio-political and economic characterisation of the phenomenon of human mobility.

The exhibition entitled “The Masters of Byssus, Silk and Linen” (13-22 May, 2017; Rectorate Palace, Sapienza University of Rome) intends to highlight the way in which, by processing raw materials, high quality fabrics can be achieved, which are then embellished by the weaver’s hand, as it was done in ancient times with silk and linen and is still practiced today with byssus. The unwoven fibers and/or fabrics were dyed in order to add extra beauty to the fabric. The exhibition, organized by the Commodity Science Museum, the Chemistry Museum “Primo Levi” and the “Polo Museale Sapienza” (PMS), with the collaboration of the Cultural Association “Visioni e Illusioni”, with the patronage of the Polish Institute of Rome, intends to highlight the additional value of fabrics when they are processed by the Artists, who are better defined as Masters of Byssus, Silk and Linen.

Il libro contiene i risultati del lavoro di ricercatori e docenti di Sapienza e di altre università e centri di ricerca pubblici, aggregatisi attorno al nodo romano di Urban@it-Centro Nazionale di Studi per le Politiche Urbane che, dal 2016, ha avviato l’“Osservatorio-Roma”: un’iniziativa multidisciplinare e indipendente di studio delle politiche urbane nella Capitale. A fronte dei media, oltre che delle polemiche fra gli attori politici, che affermano che la città è in regresso, l’Osservatorio, con questo suo primo prodotto, prova a offrire materiali utili per fondare riflessioni collettive e plurali sul merito dei problemi pubblici, sulle azioni con cui questi vengono – o potrebbero essere – affrontati. Non soluzioni preconfezionate, quindi, né ricette per specifiche decisioni, bensì materiali frutto dell’osservazione e del monitoraggio che mirano a individuare fattori di successo e criticità delle azioni pubbliche e dei loro esiti, facendo emergere implicazioni e difficoltà, tecniche e politiche, dell’ideare e perseguire strategie di trasformazione e sviluppo della città. A questo fine, la produzione di conoscenze sulla concretezza operativa delle questioni, delle azioni e delle pratiche politiche e amministrative, spesso condotte in condizioni di urgenza, è ancorata a una contestualizzazione critica di una varietà di implicazioni, a partire dal peso esercitato da rappresentazioni e azioni del passato. I primi prodotti qui presentati confermano le potenzialità del confronto fra punti di vista diversi e complementari sull’agenda (i problemi e le soluzioni puntali, già all’ordine del giorno o possibili, le strategie di trasformazione della città, esplicite o praticate implicitamente) e sui processi dell’azione pubblica (l’assunzione di decisioni e le pratiche quotidiane dell’azione di governo) nell’ipotesi che ricerca e confronto pubblico sui temi e i problemi della città possano servire ad affrontare le sfide della Capitale, rendendola, nel tempo, meno debole.
