I musei sono luoghi in cui si possono conoscere storie e cose capaci di suscitare emozioni: ogni museo ha la sua storia e la sua ragion d'essere. Il Museo nazionale della Emigrazione Italiana nasce con l'obiettivo di rappresentare un contributo alla comprensione del fenomeno dell'emigrazione, con particolare attenzione al periodo che va dalla fine dell'Ottocento sino ai giorni nostri, posizionandosi come momento centrale per la lettura di un fenomeno portante nella storia politica, economica e sociale del nostro paese. Gli studi sull'emigrazione italiana rappresentano, nel quadro della storiografia sull'Italia post-unitaria, un tema di particolare interesse, che si è arricchito, nel corso degli ultimi anni, di importanti e significativi contributi che hanno consentito di approfondire le motivazione delle peregrinazioni dei nostri emigranti. Tante sono le realtà esistenti sul territorio nazionale per raccontare con diverse chiavi di lettura il fenomeno, nel suo complesso, di volta in volta analizzandone le specificità. Proprio alla luce di queste numerose esperienze si è sentita la necessità di fornire una visione quanto più esaustiva e completa del fenomeno migratorio grazie ad una metodologia di comunicazione integrata, nell'intento di far emergere l'organicità del flusso migratorio nazionale. L’enorme fioritura di iniziative in questo primo decennio, culminate nella fondazione del Museo nazionale dell’emigrazione italiana a Roma, fa ben sperare per il futuro delle ricerche sulla diaspora italiana, un fenomeno che per giunta vede negli ultimi anni una notevole ripresa. Tuttavia si ha anche l’impressione che la crescente attenzione produca un impoverimento della conoscenza di quanto realmente accaduto. L’emigrazione italiana ha infatti avuto uno sviluppo su più secoli, dal medioevo a oggi, e viene invece costantemente ridotta a pochi episodi e a pochi schemi facilmente piegabili alla volontà di chi desidera utilizzarli per illustrare una propria tesi. In questo piccolo contributo vorremmo quindi indicare come sia possibile ricostruire la vicenda storica nel suo complessivo sviluppo temporale, evidenziarne alcuni modelli (di partenza dall’Italia e d’insediamento fuori della Penisola) e segnalarne i riflessi nell’immaginario del nostro paese.

When European sailors began to explore the rest of the world, the problem of keeping healthy on such long voyages became acute. Malnourishment and crowded conditions bred disease, but they also carried epidemics that decimated the indigenous populations they encountered and brought back new diseases like syphilis. As navies developed, the well-being of crews became a dominant factor in the success of naval operations, so it is no surprise that the Royal Navy led the way in shipboard medical provision, and sponsored many of the advances in diet and hygiene which by the Napoleonic Wars gave its fleets a significant advantage over all its enemies. These improvements trickled down to the merchant service, but the book also looks at two particularly harsh maritime environments, the slave trade and emigrant ships, both of which required special medical arrangements. Eventually, the struggle to improve the fitness of seamen became a national concern, manifest in a series of far-reaching and sometimes bizarre public health measures, generally directed against the effects of drunkenness and the pox. In this way, as in many others, an attempt to address the specific needs of the seafarer developed wider implications for society as a whole. It also produced scientific breakthroughs that were a universal benefit, so far from being a narrow study of medicine at sea, this book provides a fascinating picture of social improvement.
