This thesis takes as a starting point the results of three large scale evaluations of museum education programmes, which presented an unexpected and potentially highly significant geography of school visits to museums, with 46% of school visits in one evaluation made by schools located in areas classified among the 20% most deprived areas in England. These research findings appear to challenge the wide-spread popular perception of museums as rather elitist and exclusionary, drawing attention towards the potential for museums to contribute to social inclusion. The findings also chimed well with contemporary government social inclusion agendas. The study combines both quantitative and qualitative investigations to examine and explain the social geography of school visits to museums. Application of the Townsend index and Experian MOSAIC to the original datasets suggests that the pattern of school visits remains broadly similar when each of these measures are used. Pupil postcodes and free school meal (FSM) data are also used to address the ecological fallacy, concluding that analysis at school level is useful to appreciate school contexts at a finer spatial level. Through further quantitative analysis it is concluded that the location and size of museums is particularly significant, emphasising the importance of the local. An interpretive framework based on the concepts of economic, social, cultural and emotional capital is also used to consider the impacts that museums may have on teachers and pupils, which might contribute to social inclusion. Analysis of qualitative data reveals the interplay of the different forms of capital, particularly how each form influences and conditions school visits. It is concluded that in the museum setting social, cultural and emotional capital are potentially more likely to be acquired. It is argued that discussions presented in the research substantiate the results of the original evaluations and help to move discussions beyond the shorthand thinking of museums as either elitist or non-elitist.

"Inclusion” is a word, a concept, a value, a set of practices, but what should it mean for museum staff and leaders as they envision new ways of being a museum in an emergent future? Political and environmental upheavals, and now a global pandemic, are transforming the museum landscape forever. How can our paradigm for understanding inclusion continue to transform as well? This book offers a new paradigm for understanding inclusion grounded in a retrospective of museum worker efforts to test the limits of inclusion, a reflection on inclusion’s advantages and limitations in practice, as well as the integral concerns of racial equity and social justice. Questions throughout the book invite readers to reflect on how their own experiences can add to, and expand on, new ways of thinking about inclusion in museums. Museum workers and lovers can use this book as a tool for engaging with “inclusion” anew, and as a terrain for collaborative inquiry and world-building that can help us imagine and realize new potential for museums in the future.

Do museums create space for everyone? Museums hold significant cultural importance and should utilize inclusive practices to ensure they serve their entire audience. However, there hasn't been recent research in the field to bridge the gap of having a clear understanding of social inclusion. This research project seeks to discover how museums can become more accessible and welcoming to diverse audiences. The specific questions answered by this research include: (1) What does "social inclusion" mean for museums from the perspective of museum professionals? (2) How do museum professionals perceive the degree of social inclusivity within their institutions? and (3) What socially inclusive practices are applied by museum professionals at their institutions? To answer these questions, an exploratory qualitative study was conducted through interviews with museum professionals across various in the United States. Through this research, we identified perceptions related to what it means to be socially included and critical elements necessary for an organization to foster social inclusivity. Furthermore, this research highlighted commonalities among various programs and practices employed by different organizations to incorporate principles of social inclusion into their programming and operations. Museums are undergoing a significant transformation, transitioning from artifact guardians to dynamic educational institutions with a strong emphasis on promoting positive societal change through unbiased information sharing. This shift in focus is of paramount importance as it reflects how museums perceive and adapt to their roles today. Additionally, the research has highlighted three key components that museum professionals prioritize for achieving social inclusion: sustainable stewardship of cultural heritage to ensure equitable access, presenting information without bias to encourage open dialogue and understanding, and creating a welcoming and inclusive experience for all visitors. These insights provide a deeper understanding of the evolving roles and responsibilities of museums and shed light on their commitment to fostering social inclusion within their institutions. By finding tangible solutions for creating genuinely inclusive environments in the nation's cultural centers, we may open opportunities for all people to fully engage with history and culture.
