Music and Transcendence explores the ways in which music relates to transcendence by bringing together the disciplines of musicology, philosophy and theology, thereby uncovering congruencies between them that have often been obscured. Music has the capacity to take one outside of oneself and place one in relation to that which is ’other’. This ’other’ can be conceived in an ’absolute’ sense, insofar as music can be thought to place the self in relation to a divine ’other’ beyond the human frame of existence. However, the ’other’ can equally well be conceived in an ’immanent’ (or secular) sense, as music is a human activity that relates to other cultural practices. Music here places the self in relation to other people and to the world more generally, shaping how the world is understood, without any reference to a God or gods. The book examines how music has not only played a significant role in many philosophical and theological accounts of the nature of existence and the self, but also provides a valuable resource for the creation of meaning on a day-to-day basis.

The urge to connect with that which transcends our experience, be it a higher power, another person or some artistic ideal or aspect of nature, is one of the things that makes us human. Musical Sincerity and Transcendence in Film focuses on the ways filmmakers treat music reflexively—that is, draw attention to what it is and what it can do. Examining a wide range of movies from recent decades including examples from Indiewood, teen film, and blockbuster cinema, the book explores two recurring ideas about music implied by foregrounded musical activity on screen: that music can be a potent means of sincere expression and genuine human connection and that music can enable transcendence of disenchantment and the mundane. As an historical musicologist, Timothy Cochran explores these assumptions through analysis of musical style, aesthetic implications, and narrative strategy while treating the ideas as historically-grounded and culturally-situated with conceptual origins often lying outside of film. For Hans Kung, as for many other people, something can sometimes appear in Mozart's music which goes beyond the human dimension and gives intimations of a bliss which transcends even all music. In this short book he sets out to identify what it is. Much, he argues, has been written about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, but relatively little about the religious dimension of his person and music. While it is completely taken for granted that Johann Sebastian Bach has Protestant roots and was a pious man, that Mozart was a Catholic and wrote music for masses is virtually ignored. So the first part of the book looks at Mozart's life and music from this perspective and asks how it contributes towards those 'traces of transcendence' which may be perceptible to those open to them. The second part sheds new light on Mozart's Coronation Mass by setting it against its contemporary cultural and political horizon and the critical confrontation with religion beginning at the time of its composition. Here is a work which is not only worthy to stand alongside Karl Barth's famous study, but which for many readers will even eclipse it.
