There is growing interest among scholars and practitioners in how the arts can help rebuild post-conflict societies. This edited collection explores a range of musical practices for social and political peace. By presenting case studies in each chapter, the aim is to engage with musicality in relation to time, space, peace-building, healing, and reconciliation. Emerging scholars' work on Latin America, especially Colombia, and on the African Great Lakes region, including Zimbabwe, Rwanda and Kenya, is brought together with the purpose of reflecting critically on 'music for peace-building' initiatives. Each author considers how legacies of violence are addressed and sometimes overcome; lyrics are examined as a source of insights. Much of the scholarship on difference in colonial Spanish America has been based on the "racial" categorizations of indigeneity, Africanness, and the eighteenth-century Mexican castas system. Adopting an alternative approach to the question of difference, Joanne Rappaport examines what it meant to be mestizo (of mixed parentage) in the early colonial era. She draws on lively vignettes culled from the sixteenth- and seventeenth-century archives of the New Kingdom of Granada (modern-day Colombia) to show that individuals classified as "mixed" were not members of coherent sociological groups. Rather, they slipped in and out of the mestizo category. Sometimes they were identified as mestizos, sometimes as Indians or Spaniards. In other instances, they identified themselves by attributes such as their status, the language that they spoke, or the place where they lived. The Disappearing Mestizo suggests that processes of identification in early colonial Spanish America were fluid and rooted in an epistemology entirely distinct from modern racial discourses.

El Ciclo de magníficats del compositor Rodrigo de Ceballos es un tesoro musical del renacimiento español que se encuentra completo solamente en el Archivo musical de la Catedral de Bogotá, Colombia. A pesar de que Ceballos nunca viajó al Nuevo Mundo, su música fue ejecutada a lo largo de varios siglos en la Catedral y por esta razón sobrevive de forma completa únicamente allí. La presente transcripción a notación moderna está basada en los manuscritos existentes en la Catedral y se presenta con rigor editorial para preservar la autenticidad de las fuentes; adicionalmente incluye las fórmulas gregorianas para entonar los versos pares que se alternan con los versos impares compuestos en estilo polifónico por el autor.
