Excerpt from Musical Education Art is the product of the human mind, always tend ing to ennoble, to poetize and idealize the materials furnished by nature. Science, as cold and positive as Art is exuberant, appears here with its numbers and exact formulae, as a salutary curb, or a pendulum charged with main taining the equilibrium. From Language is born Art, which could not exist without it, and which Science comes in her turn to explain, and prop up in some measure, by guiding her in her developments, and preventing her some times from wandering into dangerous and blind paths. Excerpt from The Needs of Popular Musical Education I AM not so presumptuous as to suppose that any words of mine can add weight to an address given by one of our most accomplished musicians upon a theme which he has made his own. Sir Henry Hadow speaks upon musical education with an authority which no wise man will challenge, and with the wit, grace, and knowledge calculated to commend his message to a wide audience. I trust, indeed, that his audience will be wide. I could wish that every teacher, every body of school managers, every local edu cation authority would ponder the substance of this pregnant allocution, holding, as I do, that in no way can the general refinement of life in this country be more effectually furthered than by the restoration of music to its proper place in the scheme of our common education. Excerpt from A Guide to the Chassevant Method of Musical Education During the last ten years or so there has been, among musical educationalists, a gradual awakening to the fact that for the most part the teaching of music, which in its very nature depends upon the listening capacity, had been attempted without any special appeal to the ear. I think I do not overstate the case when I say that few grown-up persons, even after years of instrumental study and singing, can write a simple melody from dictation; and only a small proportion of those who have studied harmony can follow a progression of chords by ear. This condition of things may be partly due to the pessimistic idea, which has prevailed in the past, that some people being born with an ear for music and some without, the matter ended there. Probably, however, the true explanation is that the importance of ear training has not, to any great extent, been realised. It is no uncommon experience for a teacher to have a pupil introduced with the remark: "So and so has far too good an ear. Excerpt from The Musical Education of the Child, Some Thoughts and Suggestions, for Teachers: Parents and Schools Feeling, however, that to alter their manner would tend in all probability to destroy whatever directness they might possess, I have ventured to leave them virtually as they first appeared, merely adding a few fresh points which seemed to drive home more completely the arguments advanced. It will doubtless be noticed that some overlapping of idea occurs from time to time in the course of these essays, and that a topic developed in one is referred to, possibly at some length, in another. Excerpt from Music-Education: An Outline But however essential the object just men tioned may be, it is not the primal aim of music education. It assumes that every child, woman, or man should go out from the discipline of music-study, as he should from every other study, and exhibit all the qualities of true edu cation, the leading out of strong, healthy perceptive and conceptive power, a power capable of application to all research, equal to the emergencies of any problem of thought, and purified by the highest spiritual ideals. From this conception of the problem of education, and the relation of music to that problem, has sprung the system and mode of music-study designated by the term music-education. They will bear in mind that the idea underlying the conception and construction of my whole system is that the education of to - morrow must, before all else, teach children to know themselves, to measure their intellectual and physical capacities by judicious comparison with the efforts of their predecessors, and to submit them to exercises enabling them to utilise their powers, to attain due balance, and thereby to adapt themselves to the necessities of their individual and collective existence. Excerpt from The Education of the Music Teacher IT has been well said that many things reach the intellect that never reach the consciousness.' Thus, one may read the injunction Love thy neighbor as thyself; may give intellectual as sent to it as a wise and just line of conduct to pursue, and yet may never so thoroughly adopt it as to resolve it into a spontaneous impulse to action. Now the whole purpose of life clearly shows itself to be the up-building of the consciousness; the perception of facts by the intellect and their conscious acceptance by the inner self as working principles. Thus the individual is strengthened and his field of vision is enlarged. His purpose becomes specifically directed, and his work is more perfectly accomplished. The object of this book is to bring certain essential facts particularly before the teacher; 1 Sigurd Ibsen, Human Quintessence.
