Angesiedelt an den Schnittstellen von Musikwissenschaft, Ästhetik und Soziologie widmet sich die Studie zentralen Wertungen über Musik in Romanen der Gegenwartsliteratur und jüngeren philosophischen Schriften. Prof. Dr. Michael Custodis ist Professor für Musik der Gegenwart und Systematische Musikwissenschaft an der Westfälischen Wilhelms-Universität Münster. Neben der Auseinandersetzung mit NS-Kontinuitäten im deutschen Nachkriegsmusikleben arbeitet er u.a. über musik-soziologische Themen, Musik des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts sowie Wechselwirkungen zwi-schen 'populärer' und 'klassischer' Musik.

The music reviews of Robert Schumann and Richard Wagner are central documents of 19th-century German musical culture. This book takes a closer look at the way these texts were written and explores the significant contributions Schumann and Wagner made to the discourse of musical appraisal. To that effect, the author raises fundamental questions that have thus far remained unaddressed: What textual features characterize the critical writings? How do Schumann and Wagner understand their roles as critics of music? And in what way do they reach out to the reader? Rather than understanding these critical writings exclusively as a gateway to the compositions and musical aesthetics of Schumann and Wagner, this book analyzes the texts through the lens of pragmatics, narratology and discourse analysis. It has been sixty years since Rock 'n' Roll exploded into the mainstream, yet we remain limited in our understanding of how its bawdy excesses absorbed into the annals of mass popularity in such a short amount of time. Mickey Vallee asks: what if the Rock 'n' Roll eruption was nothing less than postwar consumer capitalism at its very best, precisely because it was taken as its very worst? Vallee explores the emergence of Rock 'n' Roll's from an entirely new theoretical disposition in order to answer this question, drawing mainly from Lacanian cultural psychoanalysis to reveal that Rock 'n' Roll was far more conformist than we are generally led to believe; namely, that it was conformist with emerging liberal principles of freedom from the tyranny of the state. Vallee supports this proposition with detailed analyses of familiar (and not-so-familiar) characters and texts in Rock 'n' Roll to suggest that the disruption of our symbolic economy was symptomatic of a new cultural logic of economic freedom. While not denying Rock 'n' Roll's role in the pre-civil rights movement, Vallee refuses the possibility to deny that Rock 'n' Roll's symbolic efficacy ultimately coordinated a neoliberal foundation to the ideology of individualism in its rhythm, instrumentation, lyrics, and vocals, where its power was at its most effective and affective.

Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) gilt nicht nur als der Vater der Horror-, Fantasy- und Kriminalliteratur, er war auch ein überaus musikaffiner Dichter, der zahlreiche Spuren in der Musikgeschichte hinterlassen hat. Bereits wenige Jahre nach seinem Tod begannen Komponisten, sich mit seinen Texten zu beschäftigen und die Faszination hält bis heute an. Jahrhunderts über Sinfonische Dichtungen, Ballette und Opern der Jahrhundertwende bis hin zu aktuellen Musicals und Heavy-Metal-Alben. Dieser Versalität in der Allianz 'Poe und Musik' geht Gregor Herzfeld erstmals in umfassender und systematischer Weise nach. Dabei widmet sich seine Studie ebenso bekannten Stücken wie Sergej Rachmaninoffs Kantate Die Glocken oder dem Konzeptalbum Tales of Mystery and Imagination von The Alan Parsons Project, wie sie kaum bekannte, vergessene Kostbarkeiten zu Tage fördert. Stipendien erhielt er von der Fritz-Thyssen-Stiftung und vom DAAD. 2012 erfolgte mit 'Poe in der Musik' die Habilitation im Fach Musikwissenschaft an der Freien Universität Berlin, wo er derzeit als Privatdozent lehrt und forscht.

Als zeitgenössischer Komponist, dessen Werke von einem christlich-humanistischen Geist getragen werden, fühlt sich Stefan Heucke (*1959) unverkennbar der Tradition der deutschen Kunstmusik ab dem 18. Jahrhundert verpflichtet. Das Verzeichnis seiner Werke lässt Stefan Heucke mit den "Drei Liedern nach Gedichten von Georg Trakl" op. 1 beginnen, die Ende der 1970er Jahre entstanden sind. Spätestens seit Mitte der 1980er Jahre, als er mit der Uraufführung seiner "Vier Orchesterstücke" op. 5 beim "Forum junger deutscher Komponisten für Orchestermusik" ausgezeichnet wurde, ist Heucke als Komponist in der Öffentlichkeit präsent. Sein Werkkatalog ist seither auf annähernd 100 Kompositionen angewachsen, die eindrucksvoll belegen, dass er als Komponist die musikalischen Gattungen in ihrer Breite bedient: Opern und Oratorien stehen neben Sinfonien, Konzerten und geistlicher Musik ebenso wie Kammermusik und Liedern.

This book unfolds the manifold, complex and intertwined relations between Fuzzy Logic and music in a first comprehensive overview on this topic: systematically as an outline, as completely as possible, in the aspects of Fuzzy Logic in this relation, and especially in music as a process with three main phases, five anthropological layers, and thirteen forms of existence of the art work (Classics, Jazz, Pop, Folklore). Being concerned with the ontological, gnoseological, psychological, and (music-) aesthetical status and the relative importance of different phenomena of relationship between music and Fuzzy Logic, the explication follows the four main principles (with five phenotypes) of Fuzzy Logic with respect to music: similarity, sharpening 1 as filtering, sharpening 2 as crystallization, blurring, and variation. The book reports on years of author’s research on topics that have been only little explored so far in the area of Music and Fuzzy Logic. It merges concepts of music analysis with fuzzy logical modes of thinking, in a unique way that is expected to attract both specialists of music and specialists of Fuzzy Logic, and also non-specialists in both fields. The book introduces the concept of dialectic between sharpening and – conscious – “blurring”. In turn, some important aspects of this dialectic are discussed, placing them in an historical dimension, and ending in the postulation of a 'musical turn' in the sciences, with some important reflections concerning a “Philosophy of Fuzzy Logic”. Moreover, a production-oriented thinking is borrowed from fuzzy logic to musicology in this book, opening new perspectives in music, and possibly also in other artistic fields.
